I travelled to Melbourne for an exam and wanted to stay somewhere comfortable, quiet and close to a train station but not too expensive. I chose the Alto based on Trip Advisor reviews and it suited my needs perfectly. The location is very convenient to Southern Cross station and the rooms are comfortable and quiet. The staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly when I had trouble connecting my computer to the free wifi - the entire front desk staff spent about 45 minutes taking turns to try to solve the problem (which turned out to be my computer, not the network). The guest lounge is a nice spot for an afternoon coffee, and I definitely recommend having breakfast there in the morning. I chose a pay-in-advance package with breakfast included and thought it was very good value overall. The Alto is definitely the nicest of the three places I've stayed in Melbourne, and I will choose it again for my next trip there.
