“I made it home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013 via mobile

Stayed for over a week for work and it was a comfortable home away from home. Had a single room, kitchenette was good but no stove or oven to cook with (only apartments with stove/oven). Hotel very clean and well kept. Beds very comfortable. All staff were so friendly and helpful EVERY time. Offsite gym AMAZING inc classes (I run/train everyday, fussy with gyms). Food lovely although slow but may have just been bad night. Great location with train station, main bus depot and tram stop so close. Definitly recommend and look forward to staying again. Enjoy

This was our first trip to Melbourne and after reading reviews on Trip Advisor, we decided to stay at the Alto Hotel for 3 nights. The Alto is a boutique hotel in a great location on Bourke, close to tram stops and the Southern Cross station. The staff were very helpful and the food in the restaurant was great. We booked a petite queen room for the duration of our stay, which was quite small, with the tiniest bathroom you have ever seen! However, the room was comfortable and adequate for our short stay. Having said that, we will definitely book a larger room on our next stay! We were rather disappointed that the hotel restaurant wasn't open for evening meals during the weekend, but there were plenty of other choices in the area so it wasn't too much of a problem. This is a very comfortable hotel and we will definitely stay there again. The free wi-fi was an added bonus!

Room Tip: The petite queen bedroom is rather small, with an even smaller bathroom so if you like space around...

Three of us visited Melbourne on business and we thought we would try the Alto Hotel this time, instead of two hotel rooms, and instead of the (sometimes) sterile and disconnected atmosphere of an apartment. As the Alto Hotel featured 9th on Trip Adviser, we thought we'd give it a go.

As the other reviews say, it is clean, staff are friendly and the location is good, there are taxis nearby and the Southern Cross Station is just a few metres walk away. Rooms are well appointed, the fact that this is an eco-friendly hotel was not the reason we chose it, but it felt good to be somewhere that had a conscience about the environment, and you really did not notice anything much different, other than the shampoo/soaps etc on the walls, and a recycling bin!

We were in a two bedroom apartment, and were surprised when we arrived how small it was. The second bedroom is better suited to small children, as the two beds are pretty much jammed in, so one of us opted to sleep in the living area on the sofabed. Bathrooms are extremely small, and if you're travelling with women, there is not really any room to put toiletries on the vanities etc. I think for three adults you would be better off booking the three bedroom apartment, not sure if the bathrooms are bigger though.

Beds were clean and comfortable (the sofabed clean, but not so comfortable!) - and decor was contemporary and pleasant. We did not eat at the Alto, but the dining area seemed small but welcoming. Free wifi was brilliant, all of us made use of it the entire time. Having a washing machine and dryer was really convenient too.

It was very quiet - no street noise at all except for the usual rubbish trucks around 6am. We were in room 407.

That was my first time in Melbourne and I stayed for 5 nights. The location of this hotel just could not be better, just 5 mins walk from the Southern Cross Station and 15 mins walk to the Aquarium. There was a little supermarket nearby too.
Their breakfast menu was fantastic. Our package included one cooked item from the kitchen everyday and that just made our every morning satisfied and perfect. The Egg Benedict and Egg Florentine were the must-try items. Bed was comfortable, free wifi connection was fast.
Apples for free everyday which made my stay a lot healthier. The basin in the bathroom was smaller than expected though.

Stayed here for 3 nights in August 2013. For the first night we stayed in a studio queen room which was quite spacious for boutique hotels. The next two nights we had a friend who was meeting us in Melbourne and stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment which was excellent. Had 2 bathrooms also. The hotel has free wifi and a safe in the room. To me these are essentials but there are many Australian hotels who believe you should pay for these as extras. Special mention to Charly at reception who was extremely helpful with our bookings and information. Gary, the manager went above the call of duty in providing us with the 2 bedroom apartment as our friend decided last minute to visit us. Gary was exceptional in keeping us up to date on any cancellations and luckily there was and he contacted us whilst out to dinner. Cannot speak more highly of him and his staff. The breakfast was worth the cost and would recommend this. In all a fantastic stay.

Room Tip: If three or four people book the 2 bedroom apartment.

This was the second time I had stayed at the Alto and if possible, it was even better than the first. Though a small hotel there is everything you need including a dining room which has an excellent short menu and in which solitary travelers as well as groups are made to feel welcome. Reasonably priced dinner menu with more than adequate wine and prompt service made this a real plus at the end of long business days. The free guest membership to the nearby local gym, only one block away, is well worth using as its facilities are clean and professional. The concierge help was very efficient in answering questions and making suggestions based on good local knowledge. The rooms and the bar area had consistently good wifi connectivity. The location is ideal for both business or leisure visitors.

Great spot near Southern Cross railway station. Warm (two heat pumps!) apartment with all we needed and more. The restaurant was cozy and had great breakfasts. Friendly and all mod cons in a five star green hotel.

Room Tip: Light rooms in old heritage part at the front. Probably quieter at back but triple glazing meant not...
