“Loved this small hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

The Alto is just as advertised! Very friendly reception staff, especially Charley, ready to help with sightseeing and restaurant suggestions & how best to get around the city. Our room was small but very comfortable with cozy bedding, small fridge & microwave. Loved that a carafe of cold water with chilled glasses was awaiting in the fridge, as well as real milk for the coffee or tea if needed. We appreciated that our room looked to the alley and was quiet as Bourke St. is the main thoroughfare & busy. Just a few minutes walk to central station transport and walking distance to shops & restaurants - location was perfect. We didn't eat in the hotel but did enjoy an evening wine - good Chardonnay at a reasonable price. Would definitely stay again.

We stayed here for the Avalon Airshow over a 4 day period. We got a GREAT welcome, Wifi was available free-of-charge up to 500mb to your room, you RARELY get this in central city hotels. We never had a problem connecting.

It was a hop, skip and jump to Southern Cross Station, close to restaurants and food halls. There was no road noise at all.

We had a 2 bedroom apartment with all amenities - dishwasher, microwave, fridge, etc. The beds were comfortable and what was unique, which we liked, was that you were not supplied with small bottles of shampoo or little packets of soap. Due to their green policy a dispenser containing shampoo, conditioner and body wash is attached to the shower wall. I am usually reluctant to use hotel shampoos but made an exception and it was great!

We loved the freely available coffee for guests in their lounge, the "library" and breakfast! Real value in the heart of Melbourne.

I also liked the fact that the Alto sent confirmation updates as our visit neared.

On Monday our check-out day we had to pick up a rental car. They happily stored our luggage whilst we walked a few blocks to pick up our rental car. We were able to park right outside to load up the car.

We have visited many hotels in the major cities in Australia. They basically all operate the same, charge for WiFi, no complementary coffee, they do not offer anything unique to make them stand apart - the Alto does and does it well.

Everything reported in previous reviews is exactly what you will find. The Alto is a lovely place to stay. Parking is offsite and outside. However, you do need a remote control for entrance, exit therefore your vehicle is safe. Breakfast is really good, although I can't recommend the omelette. The coffee is okay - we snuck up the street for a better one. The Alto is on 4
floors so you feel quite private. We really liked staying here and the only downside for us was distance from Melbourne's
CBD. We spend a lot of time in the City and we found the location a little too far out for us. Price is great, service and hospitality is top notch. Closeness to trams and trains (Southern Cross) is convenient - good for Fleminton races. Stay at
the Alto and form your own opinion - you really won't be disappointed.

We had a fantastic stay at the Alto. It was central to everything we were doing whilst in Melbourne. Walking distance to the Casino, Exhibition Centre and Ethiad Stadium. The staff were all friendly and the free coffee in the lounge was a bonus. We were happy to see that this hotel is respecting the environment and still achieving a high standard for their customers. Breakfast each morning was included in our package and is always a great start to the day. The tram stops right out the front for ease of travel around the city. Would definitely stay there again when we are back in Melbourne.

Room Tip: We stayed in a queen studio apartment on the 1st floor, the room was ideal for a couple and there wa...

We stayed 11 nights at the Alto. All our time was spent in Melbourne. Check in was quick after an early flight and our bags were in our room when we returned later in the afternoon.

Breakfast was included in our rate but we only had breakfast three mornings, preferring to explore the trendy / arty laneway cafes Melbourne has to offer, and self cater when we had an early start before the restaurant opened. Alto very handy to the supermarket on Spencer Street. Did not use the evening bar or their restaurant (limited menu and so many other restaurants in the city to explore).

Our room was at the rear of the hotel, but still had natural light coming thru so we didn't feel squeezed in at all. Did not hear any noises from the laneway during the night. Appreciated the open window. The aircon did a good job too cooling us down as the weather in Melbourne for the first few days we stayed was very muggy, then hot for the remainder. The bed was super comfy.

Alto actually does what it says regarding towel replacement - most hotels we have stayed in have signs about putting your towels in the bath / floor if you want a replacement saying they care for the environment / water usage etc, only to return back to the hotel room and find towels replaced when they didn't need to. Well done Alto for looking after the environment and only replacing the towels when requested (only once during our stay).

We used Alto's self service laundry twice - wash only takes 21 minutes ($2), and drying half an hour ($3). Washing powder provided too at no cost, unlike so many hotels / motels.

We tried the relaxation room massaging chairs once.

We would certainly recommend the Alto to any visitors to Melbourne.

Transport around Melbourne couldn't be faulted - trams just a few metres away from the hotel to take us to Bourke Street mall if it was too hot to walk, St Kilda or Docklands mall.

We are traveling throughout Australia and I picked the Alto Hotel for our four nights in Melbourne, and I am so glad I did.

This is a boutique hotel with absolutely amazing service! The rooms are very nice, they are kept clean and the dispensers of soap, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner are really a plus.

The gentlemen who work the front desk are amazing. I can't remember everyone's name but I do remember that Andrew is a jewel! They were very helpful when our power converter quit and loaned us one. Also printed out some e-tickets for us, gave us wonderful restaurant suggestions. Very personal hotel service and it was much appreciated.

Room Tip: Don't let the window complainers put you off. This place is a jewel.
