“Great location, modern finish with good amenities, friendly service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2012

We stayed here as a family of four in a two bedroom apartment for one night. The apartment was small, but was totally fine for us and given the very central location is probably not really that small at all. It has a small living area with TV, a well provisioned kitchen and downstairs bathroom including shower. Upstairs were two bedrooms with a bathroom. There are small balconies on both levels which I really liked. It is a modern fit out in a charmingly old building. There is a restaurant on site but we didn't use it, it looked to be very busy and the menu is good. Our concierge was courteous and helpful. I agree with other comments - this is not expensive by some standards, but is good value for money given the location, service and standard of accommodation. The location is a two or three minute walk to Southern Cross station and the shops there, and also not far from the Southbank precinct.
My only issue was that it was a little noisy at night with air conditioners from other buildings below our windows, however I'm a light sleeper so it probably wouldn't bother most people.
Highly recommend.

This hotel has raised the bar for all Melbourne hotels in this price range (affordable, but not "budget"). The rooms were beautifully furnished, clean, quiet and well-located. These things earned them a "well and truly satisfactory" in my book. On top of this, however, they also delivered a HOT breakfast as part of our room package, a relaxation room complete with massage chairs and exceptional service. The drawbacks (yes, there are always drawbacks) were very minor in my opinion - a few steps to push a pram over in the front and the parking was not co-located (but close by). I will be making this our Melbourne hotel of choice. As far as I am concerned this was the best hotel deal we have had in a very long time. Thanks for a lovely stay, Alto.

Room Tip: I have only stayed in 1 room - 111 - and this was quiet, beautifully furnished and clean

I had a wonderful 5-day stay with my family at Alto Hotel on Bourke. We booked a 1-bedroom apartment for our stay. The room was clean and very comfortable. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel actually lent me a key to the backdoor so that we could push my mum's wheelchair into the hotel without any problem.

The hotel is at one end of Bourke Street which means that you'll have to walk a bit to get to the shopping area of Swanston Street. However, my family and I enjoyed the walk and the quietness of the area when we got back to the hotel. The carpark is just across the street and at $16 per day, that is really cheap considering that parking rates in Melbourne City is atrociously high.

Free wi-fi was a plus point. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Melbourne!

Just 5 min walk from an interchange (Southern Cross Station) and having a tram station just outside the hotel makes our free n easy holiday a very enjoyable one. To top it off, the hotel has a very delicious breakfast menu and has friendly and helpful staff.

Highly recommended for first timers or repeat visits to melbourne.

We stayed one night (unfortunately only one) we arrived early and the reception staff were really helpful and gave us directions to where we wanted to go, when we arrived back our luggage was in our room waiting for us. It hasn't been a priority for us but we did appreciate the Eco factors and loved the complimentary coffee, apples and wifi. Will definitely be staying again

Really nice place, central, reasonably priced with breakfast is a treat. Lovely historical building. Cordial reception, immaculate room and surrounding. Very confortable, not too clattered sober and well appointed and spotless. Very friendly staff. Truly eco in many ways. We will certainly go back there if we go back to Melbourne.

Good location for Spencer Street, DFO, Southbank. Little further to other side of Melbourne, but we still managed to walk everywhere (MCG, Queen Vic Markets, Old Melbourne Gaol Lygone Street) Room was good. Clean and a really comfy bed. Air con worked a treat on a 37 degree day. Wifi was not great, didn't bother us as we had our phones, but international guests may want to follow up with reception if having issues. Woudl recommend this hotel to others.
