“Great weekend place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2012

We've just checked out of this hotel and very much enjoyed our stay! If you're arriving by bus from the airport or by train, the location is unbeatable! If you're driving, they provide parking about 5 minutes walk away...just park out front in the 5 minute zone and check in, then park. The reception staff were extremely friendly. The interior design is modern, with a respectful nod to the history of this building (built circa 1906). Our Queen Suite was very clean, and had everything you would expect, although the room sizes are not massive. The bar downstairs looked beautiful with a little reading nook, however we were unable to enjoy a beer here as it only opens on weekdays. We did not eat at the downstairs restaurant either. Weekday prices are a bargain for this inner city gem. The location is extremely convenient thanks to a tram stop out the front and the SkyBus/Southern Cross Railway Station all of 5 minutes walk away. Kudos for the hotels "green" policy. Much appreciated. The only gripe I've got is that I could hear the hallway music during the night from bed, although this could have been because the rest of the hotel is whisper quiet! Perhaps it can be turned down a bit during sleep hours? We'll return when we next visit Melbourne.

Thank you for the comments. Many people feel our location is very convenient. They also seem to enjoy the little extras such as free wifi, espresso coffee in the A Lounge, library and relaxation room with auto massage chairs. Sorry that you did not get to have a drink or dine in the restaurant which is open for breakfast daily however we find on weekends that our guests are more interested in venturing out to the great restaurants, cafes and bars that Melbourne has to offer instead of staying in our cosy hideaway.

You should not have been disturbed by the hallway music as it is set to a timer to turn off at 9:30pm and not come on again until 7:30 in the morning. We will recheck the timer to ensure it is still set correctly.

Thank you for noticing our friendly staff and sustainability efforts. We try to minimise our footprint without compromising guests comfort and keeping our prices competitive. We are always looking for ways to improve our service standards and environmental performance. That way we can impress you even more when you next visit Melbourne.

Enjoyed our stay in this quaint building. Front desk staff really friendly and helpful. With so many great places to have breakfast/brunch you probably wouldn't want to have it here- no frills. While in Bourke St it is at the Spencer St railway end, so there is a journey into the heart of the city. However there is a tram stop virtually out the front door. The rooms are clean and homely, very adequate bathroom. Would stay again and recommend. Good value.

My mum and I stayed at the Alto Hotel for 3 nights and it was wonderful. Clean, modern, with great service, friendly and helpful staff, a delicious included breakfast and an AWESOME location - right in Melbourne's CBD and somehow, still quiet. The studio room was the perfect size for us. We absolutely loved Melbourne, partly because of the fact that we knew we had a wonderful place to go back to each night. For what we got, the price was fantastic. I also feel so comforted by Alto's eco-friendly attitudes - it was obvious that they go to great lengths to reduce their environmental impact. For example, we were loaned bike helmets for free and were able to buy some of their DELICIOUS rooftop honey!
Thank you so much - I will definitely be back!

Room Tip: For two people, a studio was perfect. A room any smaller (a hotel room) would have been a bit crampe...

We stayed here with friends who were also impressed with this find. The staff could not do enough for us, they were very welcoming and our bags were waiting in our room when we returned from a visit to the Vic Markets. The apartment was tastefully decorated and very comfortable, we wanted for nothing. We would highly recommend staying here, we will most certainly again!

My husband and I stayed here on a Saturday night because of its close proximity to Etihad stadium and the footy. We were both pleasantly surprised by the helpful staff and secure (private) undercover parking as we arrived by car in the evening. We were upgraded to a 1 bedroom apt from a studio queen which was great. Room was spotless, kitchenette was ample for making a light dinner as there was no room service on the weekend we stayed. Really enjoyed the lounge area with espresso/tea making facilities and a cosy open fire. Great little magazine/book library for perusing on a chilly Melbourne evening. Great service and top value for money. Thanks Alto, will stay again!

This hotel looks small outside , but once you step in inside you will feel overwhelmed with its charming and quiet feel at home. We stayed 2 nites in a duplex 2 rooms apartment which really beyond our expectation, complete kitchen, comfort even smal sofa, and alot space to put open lugagges around. Bathrom small but ok, cleanliness were best ! The tram station just some steps outside, as well as southern train station were you can get your skybus to airport. Surely irecommend this hotel and will happy to enjoy another chance to stay there more longer. 2 thumbs !

Stayed mid week so price was pretty cheap, but his hotel was great with really friendly staff who did little things like putting your bags in room for you while we went out sight seeing as room wasn't ready. I loved this hotel and would happily stay here again.
