“Excellent standards”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2011

I stayed here for 3 nights. The location was excellent - just a short walk from Southern Cross station where the airport shuttle dropped me, and within walking distance from everything in central Melbourne.

The hotel was fantastic. They also claim a lot of green credentials, and there is one thing I have to highlight. Every single hotel (including travelodges) now have a policy that they only change towels if the guest requests so (i.e. dropping them in the bathtub or floor). But I have never seen this adhered to anywhere, meaning those hotels claim to have green policies in place but staff choose to ignore them. THis is frustrating to somebody who actually would love to contribute and reduce the footprint of their hotel stay. Hotel Alto was the first place where this towel policy was actually working! well done.

This boutique hotel is a real find. It is ideally situated in the CBD of Melbourne, close to Southern Cross railway station, trams, banks, shopping etc. The breakfasts were excellent and the staff could not have been more helpful. Recommended.

We stayed here for 7 nights towards the end of August, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The staff were indeed very friendly and helpful. There's loads of maps and brochures in reception which is great. The location is fantastic too, right across the road from the biggest train station (Southern Cross), plus there's a tram stop right in front of the door.

I would like to congratulate the house keeping staff, as it was the cleanest room we have ever had in a hotel, well done! Everyday we came back to a spotless room. The shower is fantasic, good size and full strength water supply.

The only two things we didn't like was what I assume to be wooden floors above us on the 4th floor, as we could hear kids running up and down constantly, so we had to phone reception twice during the week to ask them to stop stamping like elephants above us. The window needs to stay shut, as the aircon's outside are extremely noisy. It's quiet in the room with the window closed however, but then the door does not lock properly as it needs to a vacuum to seal, so we had to make sure we leant or pulled on the door extremely hard to make sure it locks.

We had breakfast everyday in the restaurant, which was of extremely high quality, and cooked to perfection.

Overall it was a fantastic experience, at an awesome price. Can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: Be aware of the 3rd floor, and people stamping around like elephants on the floor above, could be wo...

We stayed (2 adults, 2 children) in a 2 bed loft apartment for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the well appointed rooms. The hotel is well situated, the staff were very responsive and helpful with queries and minor maintenance issues. The room was economical on space, but had all we needed. The kitchen was useful for some self-catering, and the combo washer/dryer was a big plus. The beds were comfortable and having two bathrooms was a bonus. The restaurant downstairs is intimate and the food was excellent (ate there one night, had room service on another night). Free WiFi was great, and we were pleased about the commitment to sustainability (recycling in rooms, pump dispensers for soap and toiletries).

We stayed for three nights on our first trip to Melbourne. Alto was brilliant, and surprisingly close to the Southern cross station, and only a three to four minute stroll. We can't stop talking about the fantastic service to our friends and family. The staff were friendly, polite and really helpful. The room was well appointed with everything we needed, the bed was comfy, and it's the cleanest hotel room we've stayed in. We had breakfast included in our package, which included hot breakfasts too, eg eggs benedict. They also have gluten free options including gluten free bread, which my wife appreciated. There's also free coffee for guests at any time of the day. It's from an automatic coffee machine, but the beans are grounded fresh and the coffee tastes ok. Alto also provide takeaway cups, so you can get coffee on the run, which was a nice touch. There's complimentary wifi and a couple of PCs in the restaurant/lounge where guests can use the Internet - the first 30 minutes are free. Nearby, there's a few takeaway bars and restaurants and a seven eleven, which was handy. The hotel was only about a ten minute walk to the Bourke Street mall, where the likes of David Jones and Myers are, which is pretty central. Our trip to Melbourne was great, and staying at Alto was definitely a key part of this. We've recommended Alto to friends and look forward to our next stay there.
