Took the Wife away for one night to celebrate a combined Wedding Anniversary/early Valentines/Babymoon & a Birthday Present for her. The purpose of the visit was to spend 24 hours by ourselves, without interruption, just relaxing using on demand movies and Room Service. We chose the Langham based on its location, its potential views and its reviews on Tripadvisor and acquired the Wish upon a Star Package which included valet parking, 2 glasses of complimentary champagne and Breakfast. Our expectations were met and exceeded especially as our booking was upgraded to a Club Terrace Room, which included a open aired Terrace the size of our interior room!! We had perfect weather which meant the Terrace saw great use for our stay.
The furnishings and complementary extras are all worthy of a five star hotel. The Nespresso machine was a pleasant addition. We both found the furnishings comfortable, including the outside furniture. Room layout was well thought out, (able to watch TV from the King size Bed.) Soundproofing was perfect, slide open the door to the balcony and the roar of the CBD was there, slide it closed and you were in your own cone of silence.
After a brief visit to the nearby food court (Southbank) and a review of the Room Service menu, particularly pricing, we decided not to bother with the Room Service. The pricing just could not be justified. $AUD 10 minimum spend and then $AUD 7 delivery charge?? For Room Service, even 5 star it seems excessive, my personal view is that a Hamburger should not cost a total of $AUD 34. Based on our experience with Breakfast I'm sure it would have been a great Hamburger but the price made it just a bit too much to stomach :) .
We still went ahead with the On demand Movies (again, possibly over priced at $16.95 a movie) and enjoyed the films while watching the Melbourne skyline at night through the large windows.
Based on previous Tripadvisor reviews I was looking forward to the Breakfast Buffet and found, quite pleasantly, that it met the hype. Crepe & Pancake Bar, Eggs (including Omelettes) made to order at the Buffet (-so not sitting in a Bay Marie), a wide variety of fresh foods all of it tasty and a great start to the day. Honestly, probably the best Breakfast Buffet I have encountered. Apparently it would cost $AUD 40 a head ($20 for a child) and considering the range & quality of foods on offer and the service received I think this is value(as opposed to Room Service charges).
The service received throughout was professional, courteous and responsive. Every interaction with a staff member was a friendly and welcoming one. From staff member who checked us in to the staff member who took us through the room's amenities to the staff member who checked us out, throughout our stay the staff met the 5 star expectation of service.
I did spend $5 for 24 hour Wifi access limited at 200 MB for my ipad (for social networking purposes - okay boasting!!) and found it acceptable although it did drop out several times mostly in the morning and I needed to reconnect each time. Not critical, not even annoying (it always reconnected)but I mention it for those for whom the Internet is a requirement in this day and age.
We left the Langham relaxed and with our expectations fulfilled.
I would state that the Langham would probably make more revenue if they re-looked at the pricing of their In Room Dining. Especially a Delivery Charge which just seems excessive for food coming up a lift. But access to the nearby food court solves all those concerns.
Room Tip: Get a River View Room.
