Owner description: Melbourne Central is a diverse shopping and dining destination that invites you to keep exploring. Bringing together more than 300 retailers over five levels, Melbourne Central is home to an absorbing range of Australian and international fashion brands from Gorman, Alannah Hill, Crumpler to Lulamae, Vans and Nique. Take a sugar break at Cupcake Central, a beauty break at Mecca Maxima or an indulgent time-out at Self Centred Medi Spa.The buzz continues after dark, whether you are lurking in Knox Lane with its graffiti by Melbourne's infamous DABS and MYLA, or basking beneath a screen in the Hoyts Director's Suite or Bean Bag Cinema. Spanning two city blocks, the centre boasts several unique architectural features including the giant Marionette Watch hanging in Shot Tower Square, famous for its hourly rendition of the Australian anthem 'Waltzing Matilda'. The square is named after the historic Coops Shot Tower a bullet-making facility built in 1889. Today, the brick shot tower stands proudly in its original place, protected by a modern twist: the magnificent Glass Cone, designed in the '80s by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. While it floods the centre with natural light, the Glass Cone's design also makes it one of Melbourne's most recognisable landmarks.Located atop the City Loop Melbourne Central train station and can be found on the iconic free city circle tram route. Melbourne Central boasts 822 car parks making it the perfect base for Melbourne city excursions. The five-star-rated parents' retreat offers a sanctuary for families, while The Little Library free book exchange provide spaces for pause and escape from the city's frenetic buzz.Whatever brings you to Melbourne, be it shopping, exploring with the kids, lunch, brunch or simply an unexpected adventure, it is all waiting between Lonsdale and La Trobe.

“Interesting Mix Of Shops And Stores”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

A very busy place where trams pass through right down the middle. There is an interesting mix of shops, departmental stores, and cafes on all sides. Really the heart of Melbourne. Also a wonderful place to people watch.

Great hustle and bustle of shoppers in the CBD. Shops and restaurants everywhere and a tram service right in the middle of it all for easy commuting. Plenty of laneways to connect from one street to another.

“One stop shop”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

Always loved shopping at Melbourne Central. I used to work in CBD so Bourke Street Mall & Melbourne Central was the best place for me as it was the two closest shopping precinct. I remember window shopping for hours after work & catch up a movie on Friday nights or weekends with friends or family. There is all types of stores there so you can shop till you drop. Lots of food option as well being in the heart of the city.

“busy traffic-free Street close to funky lane-ways and covered arcades”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

Bourke St Mall is in many ways just another busy central city street with department stores, restaurants and big crowds. But what makes it special are two great extra features: wonderful arcades (the Block Arcade- connecting Collins and Little Collins St, and the Royal Arcade between Bourke and Little Collins St are the best) and the fascinating lane ways off Bourke and Collins St with their funky restaurants, cafes, bars and murals. So, put aside a couple of hours at least for walking around this area
