Owner description: The Royal Exhibition Building is one of the world's oldest remaining exhibition pavilions. On 1 July 2004, it became the first building in Australia to achieve a World Heritage listing. Located in Carlton Gardens, the pavilion was originally completed in 1880 for the first of two international fairs hosted by Melbourne. On May 1st, 1901, the initial Commonwealth Parliament was held here, an event commemorated in 2001, the centenary of Australian Federation. Today, with its meticulously restored interior, expansive galleries and soaring dome, the Great Hall offers an impressive setting for trade shows, fairs and cultural and community events.

“Great Building”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

The Royal Exhibition Building used to be THE place for car shows, home shows and even religious gatherings. Best time to take a look at the inside is during the Garden show, but otherwise it is now probably only of interest to architects or those interested in old buildings.

“Private visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

Private group visits can be arranged which avoids the large crowds.

Exhibitions are very interesting taking students through the history of Melbourne, use of appliances and modern equipment than works arouund the world.

“Splendid example of a victorian exhibition pavillion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

This fabulous building sits in beautiful gardens next to the very modern Melbourne Museum. It's a great contrast of architectural styles, and well worth a walk in the park just to admire the architecture.

The interior has been beautifully restored, and if you're a fan of fancy ironwork this place is certainly worth a look.

Note that this is a working building, so it's often empty. If you can, try and plan your visit around an exhibition (I went to the Big Design Exhibition) that's taking place there so you get the most out of your visit.
