“Shoppers Paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2010

A friend spotted a great $99 deal, I didn't have time to check it out, but booked it sight unseen as the price was so good. All I knew was that it was in Little Bourke St somewhere. Try NEXT DOOR to the Myer entrance in Lt. Bourke St.! A heritage building opposite the back of the GPO retail complex, this is a shoppers heaven. Myer are doing major renovations at the moment, so if you are there to sleep, there's plenty of noise, and probably explains the ultra-cheap deal. If you are there to shop, or to experience city attractions and activities, wow - you couldn't be closer to the action.
My wotif booking had not registered my request for a smoking room, a previous Gold Coast booking request for a balcony and north-east aspect came through instead, (and must have baffled the staff), they had allocated me a on the third floor, but were happy to move me to another room on the smoking floor. Wow, what a surprise! Instead of a normal hotel room, this was a two-storey arrangement, with modern carpet and decor. Downstairs was the kitchenette, 2-seater lounge, armchair, small dining table and TV. Up the steepish stairs was a heavenly bed with stylish, contemporary bedding in taupe and chocolate, a separate bathroom with shower over a little bath, a cupboard housed ironing gear and there was a wardrobe with a full-length mirror on the inside of the door. The only drawback to this arrangement was you can't watch TV in bed... and the two-seater is pretty small for lying on (call me a sloth, but hey, I was on holidays). As it turned out, I was up early to hit the nearby laneways for a cafe breakfast each day, and was able to pop back to the room to drop off shopping or use the bathroom as required, which was a complete luxury. There's no room service, and despite a cooktop and microwave, I only used the kitchenette to make tea, since there's Vietnamese, Thai and countless restaurants in Chinatown metres from the door, there's no need to cook. My only gripe is that the windows don't open, but there's an effective rangehood if you smoke, and the split-system heating/aircon made the room really warm and comfortable.

Found this through Wotif. Thought the location would be great. When we got there, we were given a 2 bedroom apartment on the top floor. It wasn't what was advertised on their website. We were right under the airconditioning units on the roof. In the second bedroom was a staircase for the maintence staff to access the roof. It was very noisy all night and drafty in the second bedroom. There were dirty hand prints on all the walls, scuff marks everywhere and it looked like it hadn't been painted in years. There was mold all through the bathroom and the fan didn't work - it vented into the master bedroom wardrobe. There wasn't a wardrobe in the second bedroom.
The next day I asked to be moved to another apartment. We were given one on the first floor. The walls were marginally better, having been painted in the last few years. The bathroom fan at least worked partially and there was a small wardrobe in the second bedroom. However there were still several things wrong with it:
only one single powerpoint in the kitchen
no storage for towels in the bathroom
no phone in the loungeroom

To top it off, we were not advised there was a pub directly underneath our room (we were at the back of the hotel). We couldn't see it from Little Bourke Street. Friday night the noise was tolerable but Saturday night was horrendous. There were groups smoking directly under our windows (which didn't seal properly so the smoke wafted in along with the cold wind. Cigarette smoke triggers a severe asthma attack for me). There was also a group smoking pot! We were very grateful that the pub was closed on Sunday so we could get some sleep for our morning flight back home. We have never been so grateful to leave a hotel.
All in all, it really put a damper on our week's trip. We both love Melbourne so will definitely visit again but never staying at this place again!

I was looking for a place to stay for 1 night. Breakfree Heritage was a quick, cheap choice for no other reason that its in China town & a block from the Dragon Boat! It looks like its had a recent cosmetic upgrade - new carpet, paint & furniture. Although, the bathroom looks very tired & not up to the same standard as the carpet! Our apartment had a open mezzanine level with the bathroom & bedroom! I liked that. The best bit was the balcony. The balcony opened into something quite decent & the views of the city were fantastic. We could have easily moved the table out there & really dined in style if we had wanted to!! Small points to consider - no kettle! Blah. Didnt notice until the morning! No big as Melbourne has loads of brilliant cafes but still...Also, one light bulb had blown int he bathroom & a couple of light fittings were missing. Small things, other than that, we enjoyed our stay. And, we got incredibly cheap parking. The Golden square carpark has a deal with this place. Carpark cost us $7.00! Amazing value for city parking..For $185 a night, I was happy with where we stayed...

Found this one on the internet. It's a converted Victorian-era office building with high ceilings, narrow corridors and a variety of self-catering accommodation over five floors, some with street-front windows, some looking into a light well. Our apartment, the cheapest, comprised a small lounge with kitchen, average-sized bedroom with a very comfortable queen bed, and a small bathroom with shower and bath. Facilities were good for the price, including basic tea and coffee, cooking and eating utensils for four, iron and ironing board and plenty of towels. Furniture was simple, modern and perfectly adequate for the two of us. We paid the internet rate of $109 per night and felt we got good value, particularly because of the location - right in the middle of the CBD with good small supermarkets nearby.

Just checked out today after a 4 nights' stay for work ($116/night, I think). It has great location, close to Myers, DJ, Chinatown, Melbourne Central and all the restaurants and shops on Swanton Street.

The hotel room has great potential but desperately need some renovation - the rooms are loft-style, with the bed and bathroom upstairs. But with the air con downstairs, the bedroom is always quite stuffy... I have it on 18 degrees C and still woke up from the heat at night (and it's Autumn here)!!! As for the shower, my shower head leaks and spray onto the ceiling and drips back down... (speechless). Another minus for me is that the TV is downstairs, which means you can't watch TV in bed!

The cleaniness is average, but what put me off is the piles of 'old sheets' that they bagged up and leave in the corridor... so everytime you get out of the lift heading to your room, you see all these old sheets piled up almost to the ceiling... I just couldn't help but wonder how 'hygenic' is that!

Overall, this hotel is great for business people and travellers that want a central location. If you just want a homebase with a good bed and not too fuss about interiors, then I think it is a good hotel for you.

Great location, staff were friendly, appt. nice & clean, BUT very noisy from construction work going in street. Jackhammers at 10.00 pm & noisy trucks at 5.30 am.
Had we been aware of this we would not have stayed there.
