“Don't order the murtabak”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

Slick Malaysian restaurant with OK food & service but unfortunately I ordered the murtabak. It was, no kidding, 90% cabbage! Murtabak is a spicy meat & egg filled roti. But not at Mamak. Mamak served me a cabbage filled roti with specks of meat. It was bland & more importantly NOT AUTHENTIC! My daughter had the roti canai which came with a curry & a dahl. The dahl was made for the aussie taste bud & lacked the touch of sourness that all good dahls should have. My sister's nasi lemak was good but would have been better if they added some pandan leaves in the coconut rice. My brother-in-law's rojak was like a modern day vegie stack. It looked great but again not really like the rojak of the mother country. The ingredients were layered into a tower & the sauce on top was quite sweet. The seating in the restaurant was interesting. Diners sat on the cushioned bench in the centre of the restaurant facing their accompanying diners who sat on low backless square stools. If you are wanting to have a deep & meaningful conversation during your meal then Mamak is not the place. It was so noisy we have to shout our order to the waitress. Would I go back? Nope!

“Simple Great Malaysian Food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

This place has a que anytime you go! Forget about lunch time if your late! Nothing much to write about it other than the fact that it is simple great malaysian food at a cheap price! Service is not the strong point but always gets the food on the table quite quickly!

“Surprised with the lack of exposure on Tripadvisor.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

BEST MALAYSIAN RESTAURANT vie ever been to (In Australia)

Im surprised to see a lack of exposure Mamak has on Tripadvisor. This restaurant was packed when I got here. I had to wait outside 15 minutes before getting a table.

The food is super fresh, delicious and very authentic. I ordered, Two roti canai, one nasi lemak, cold teh and roti tissu.

The roti was amazing, flaky, soft, perfect texture - dipping it in the curry was just delicious. You will just want to lick the plate. The nasi lemak was just like the one I had on my trips to Malaysia. The main part is the sambal- chilli paste/sauce the spices hit the nail and tasted just like the one i had in Kuala Lumpur. If you have room, you must try the roti tissu - it can be shared with a maximum of 4-6 people. Its a very thin crispy pastry shaped into a very large cone. Served with ice-cream. Your hands will be sticky after this, but its worth it. Expect to pay below $40. Which is very cost effective. You will get value for money here.

Dont expect silver service here, however service is good. Its all about the food and company. Im looking forward to my next trip to Melbourne and Mamak. This is where you can find authentic Malaysian food without going there.

“Mamak Bagus! ("Mamak is good" in Malay language)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

Melbourne is arguably a mecca for Malaysian cuisine and the growing number of Malaysian hawker food restuarants is a good testament to this. If you like your food spicy and "lemark" (ie the rich flavour of coconute) then Mamak will not disappoint. While the menu is limited unlike most malaysian hawker food restaurants, the satay and stay sauce; roti, friend rice etc hit the "close to home" taste.....definitely worth the short queue time. The service is fast and polite.

“authentic malay food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

we are so happy to have mamak finally land in melbourne. this is the place to go for hearty malay food and roti that are like tissue. it is a treat itself watching the roti makers spin the dough over their heads in the front window.
the food arrives just about 2 seconds after you order, but bear in mind, if you want the delicious satays, they will not be entrees, but more a chaser. you need to give about 15-20 minutes for them to land on your table, but worth the wait!
if you are not prepared to wait in the long queues, go just before the lunch rush at 1.30pm or the dinner rush at 7.30.
be prepared for the noise level, eat fast and leave smacking your lips!
