If you are looking for a hotel with character, this the hotel for you. It is clean and have a nice ambiance. The garden in the front is well taken care of...you just want to sit in the front and have a sip of your coffee.
As for customer service...can't complain...staffs will do all they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible...
1. One day housekeeping staff forgot to tidy up our room; I mentioned it to the front desk person on duty. She apologized profusely and even offered us a drink at the bar which we said no. Then the day after...we went for a tour of the Great Ocean Road, when we came back which was around 10 pm...we got a letter from housekeeping manager apologizing again plus a bottle of wine (this was truly unexpected and a very nice gesture...thank you).
2. The day front desk staff helped us to resolved our issue with our delayed flight to Sydney; he even called Sydney for us so we can speak to someone regarding our airport transfer there...they are truly remarkable...

The downside to this hotel are:
1. Location, they are a bit far from the Central Business District (downtown), although, several trams will pass-by the hotel. Hardly any restaurants in the area...you have to walk for at least 20 mins or take trams to get to some decent restaurants.
2. Wifi - it was too slow and will disconnect anytime (even while you're using it...it was very annoying...even their staff can't do anything about it...it was their service provider according to them).

Overall, if you want a nice hotel with amazing customer service but willing to travel to eat and doesn't need internet connection then this hotel is for you. For me, I want a hotel that is close to everything and with fast connection although I didn't regret staying at Hotel Charsfield.

Dear MrJBToronto,

Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear you had mixed feelings about your recent stay with us.

I am pleased that you enjoyed the ambience of the hotel itself and our garden, along with the helpfulness and friendly service of the staff.

I am sorry that you found the hotel to be a little bit too far from the CBD. The trams travel along St Kilda Road and you can be within the city centre in less than 10 minutes. Thank you for bringing to my attention the trouble you had with our wifi, I have arranged for our IT person to look into this issue.

I hope that we have the opportunity to welcome you back to The Hotel Charsfield again in the future.

Kind Regards,

This is my third stay at this charming hotel this year, we had a family catch up here with our three adult children. It is alway warm friendly and inviting,. It is a short tram trip into Melbourne CBD. We had a beautiful family dinner in the dining room and breakfast was delicious. We will be back.....

I stayed in a junior suite overlooking St Kilda road and the garden area at this hotel for 2 weeks last August (2013)during my trip to Australia from the US. Not only is the hotel a beautiful boutique style hotel, but the staff were very friendly and amazingly helpful to a first time solo traveler to Melbourne. The breakfast was fabulous as were the lunchs and dinners. Located close to the tram stop, it was very easy to get around Melbourne. If I return to Melbourne, I will definately stay again.

What a lovely hotel!
My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at this lovely hotel. We were very happy with our room which was very spacious, warm, very comfortable bed, clean, nice bathroom and very friendly, helpful staff. Trams easily accessible. Very peaceful.
Would stay again, and would recommend it.

We stayed 4 nights in Charsfield hotel. A little paradise. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The room classic, clean and comfortable. Breakfast continental or with eggs or pancakes which were delicious. they also serve lunch and dinner. Its a great place to be if you want to " travel backin town" because its a beautiful historical building. The tram is 2 min walk. Very easy to get to Melbourne city center or St. Kilda. Although near a big road, it was very quiet in the room. Wifi acces was also very good. If I ever come back to Melbourne, i will defintly stay in The Charsfield Hotel again.

We stayed at the Charsfield on a family trip through Australia. It's definitely a very nice period building and the staff at reception are professional but not overly courteous.

We had a lot of luggage (intercontinental trip and two weddings to go to!) and were made to carry it ourselves up to our room, which I found quite unacceptable.

The room was tiny and had close to no storage space (one very small wardrobe), which would have suited someone on a city trip for the week-end, but was rather annoying given we had a lot of clothes and luggage.

Additionally, we were also told off for having come by car (can you believe it?) and it was very clear that my enquiries from the reception regarding best car parking in the area were considered stupid and annoying. This is one of those places where the guest is not king. Unacceptable.

Room Tip: Our room was simply too small and had close to no storage space.

Dear vanbellev,

Thank you for posting a review about your stay with us back in October 2013.

We often get lovely comments and compliments to pass onto our staff, so I am surprised to read about your experience. We pride ourselves on having high levels of personalised guest service standards, where we do offer to help guests with luggage upstairs or can provide a ground floor room where available, so I do apologise if this did not happen when you arrived.

We offer secure off-site car parking which can be arranged upon check-in (at cost).

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to The Hotel Charsfield in the near future for you to experience our high guest service standards.
