“Fantastic and unique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2014

My family and I have been staying at the Charsfield hotel on our 1-3 trips to Melbourne every year for the last 8 years. The hotel offers a unique style of accommodation, the entry and reception area is so old and beautiful, i love having a coffee in the old library. I have stayed in the most expensive rooms to cheapest rooms and all of them have always been consistently very clean and lovely to stay in, the decor is neutral and the bathrooms are still modern and always very clean.
Some of the larger rooms upstairs with a view of st kilda rd are also just gorgeous but if you are going to be out and about all day a cheaper room would suffice.
The staff are extremely helpful and very well mannered, willing to help you with anything you ask. The wifi is excellent and there is a computer located in the library if you didn't bring your own.
I have also eaten at the restaurant a few times and the food is delicious, as is the room service. My family and I enjoy the walk into the hub of Melbourne which takes about 15-20 minutes, however if you don't feel like walking, reception will always call you a taxi which will cost you about $10-$15. I remember a few years ago they had the most beautiful apples in reception you could help yourself too but I don't think they offer that service anymore which was disappointing. All in all, this hotel is beautiful and offers a gorgeous ambiance with great prices in an excellent location. I will always continue coming back for it's homely feeling!

My husband and I have just enjoyed our 4th stay at the delightful Charsfield Hotel on glorious St Kilda Road. As always we experienced first-rate service and excellent accommodation in this superb Heritage establishment. The décor is really lovely, the rooms well appointed and the Reading and Billiard rooms a nice touch - lovely to catch up on the day's news or use the free internet before retiring. The tram trip along St Kilda Road is one of the prettiest we have experienced anywhere and the close proximity to the Art Gallery, The Entertainment Centre, Hamer Hall etc as well as all the delights of Southbank add to the appeal. We love the Charsfield and are already looking forward to our next visit.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

We visited Melbourne for a wedding and decided to go down earlier for the Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Shrine so booked into this hotel as it looked pretty close. It wasn't a bad location but it is a fair way from the city and transfers from the SkyBus aren't available that far out. It's also a bit of a hike to local convenience stores, etc. We booked a private transfer through the hotel which was quite convenient but were subjected to half an hour of ranting from the driver about how they have to pay for parking at the airport now and what the government is doing to pensions. Thankfully we taxi'd back to the airport which was much more relaxing.

The staff at the hotel were lovely as is the whole decor/setting. We ended up booking 3 rooms overall: 2 standards and a twin room but my sister was kindly upgraded to a deluxe (I think so she could be on the same ground floor as us as she arrived a day later) which was nice. The rooms varied in size. The twin and the deluxe had slightly longer bathrooms and a full mirror (though we needed to side-saddle to use the toilet as it was a bit close to the wall in front). The deluxe had more room in the bedroom with a couch and coffee table. The decor/facilities were quite nice with comfortable beds, decent fridge, nice glasses and good sized TV though we were all a little bit perplexed with the air-conditioner and heater. When we arrived our rooms were quite hot and stuffy and took us a while to find out how to turn off the heater. The air-con had different settings for heat, cool and auto but in two of the rooms, the auto setting had an option of 1 or 2 rather than temperature settings (still didn't figure this out).

We ate at the restaurant a couple of times. The first for dinner which was nice and when we arrived we were the only ones there so service was great. The wine list was apparently out of date so we just went with what the waitress recommended which was okay but not terrific. The food was delicious and they kindly turned a meatball starter into spaghetti and meatballs for our rugrat which was really nice. Later the restaurant started to fill and with what appeared to be only one waitress on duty - became quite difficult to get service and we had to wait quite a while just to get our bill.

The second restaurant visit was for breakfast after the dawn service and though we went down only a couple of minutes after it was due to open it was already half full (apparently they were waiting by the door for them to open) so again with only limited staff it took a while for service and to get food but we were warned. The food again was very nice.

Overall it was a lovely stay and I would recommend it for someone wanting a nice quiet place to stay. The trams are quite conveniently located a short walk from the hotel but you'll need to get yourselves a 'myki' card as they apparently don't have ticket machines anymore. My tip would be to head towards Toorak road for convenience stores as there are more to choose from and the Melbourne Wine Store was really good.

Room Tip: The ground floor rooms are essential for anyone not good with stairs or with children/prams, etc.

Stayed for a weekend to attend a wedding. Lovely rooms, very clean and beautiful furnishings. Was upgraded to a deluxe Queen room, and was not disappointed, with plenty of space. Close to trams and only a short ride to restaurants, convience stores and the city centre.

Only negative was the comfort (or lack of) for the bedding. Could feel every spring, a pillowtop underlay would make the world of difference.

Would definately reccommend and stay again if I visit Melbourne again.

Dear Emma P

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Trip Advisor. We do hope you had a great time attending the wedding.

We are pleased that you loved the rooms and found them to be clean, comfortable and spacious. However, your comments regarding the bedding is disappointing. We usually receive such positive feedback regarding the comfort of the beds in our rooms. It would be greatly appreciated if you could contact myself directly with further information on your date of stay and room number in order for me to investigate this further.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and review and we look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back to Hotel Charsfield when you next return to Melbourne.

Kind Regards

Excellent 2 bed apartment set in a great period building. Modern fittings and very spacious rooms each with their own clean and modern bathroom. Lounge and kitchen areas were also very nice. Tram stop was very close with lots of teams coming through - recommend asking how staff how the payment system works!

A lovely historic building adds charm to the stay. The suite is spacious although the bathroom is a bit unusual in shape...long & narrow. The hotel is well maintained and immaculate. The staff were very helpful. Internet is readily available and free. There are laundry facilities on the premises and a daily paper is left at your door. Breakfast and dinner are quite nice in the restaurant but prices are spendy. The hotel is located in a great walking area.

Room Tip: Room 313 was quiet...near the stairs however just close the door to the sitting room and the bedroom...

2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2014

The lobby and common areas are part of a beautifully maintained heritage building but the guest rooms are basic. We are in a junior suite which is at the back of the hotel. The furniture is awkwardly squeezed in to the room and we haven't sat in the sofa as it isn't a usable area. The bathroom has no shelf area for guests (there is a small shelf with hotel toiletries on it). The bathroom has a shower only and has the feeling if a basic outhouse. I looked at the Premier Room which is part of the original house and it is small for the price and has average furnishings - nice cornice and fireplace but the room lacks other heritage finishes. Staff showed me the room as I was not happy with the suite and kindly offered an upgrade for one night but the room wasn't much nicer.

Cleanliness is good and the staff's service has been excellent. But the rooms are not what I expected.

Room Tip: Get the oremier room if you are expecting some heritage features.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review.

We are delighted that you enjoyed the character, charm and heritage nature of Hotel Charsfield and found the service offered by all the staff to be excellent.

Our Junior Suites are located in the renovated stables of the building and are different shapes and sizes, however we believe that they all offer character and charm.
