“Lovely and special”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2011

Stayed for a romantic night out (8th December, 2011) in a Deluxe Room on the ground floor. Room was comfortable and cosy, with very modern amenities (very sleek bathroom!) in a place with, otherwise, a lovely old-world ambience - the Hotel Charsfield was absolutely beautiful to take in. Staff were very helpful and full of smiles.

Cannot be faulted except for several (some relatively minor) things:

- value for Continental Breakfast was a bit lacklustre (while the food was lovely, the range did not perhaps live up to the $17.50 cost; however, as it was a special night out and what we did try was absolutely delicious, we did not particularly mind - Continental Breakfast included fruit, scones, muffins, croissants, toast, cereals and yoghurts)
- internet access was very, very limited, with only the first 50MB free (the fees thereafter were, frankly, exorbitant); however, there is a computer available with internet access for work/email/etc. (i.e. no downloads/gaming)
- bathroom included all the usuals (shampoo, conditioner, body lotion etc.) except for toothbrush/paste, which we found a bit bizarre; we forgot to bring toothpaste (figuring it would be there) and ended up having to purchase a tiny toothbrush/paste kit from the minibar for $5, which we felt was overpriced
- room was perhaps a liiiiittle smaller than expected; however this was not major at all (the room was still absolutely beautiful) and to be expected with conversion of a very old building for hotel purposes

We were also impressed by the hotel's follow-up; we were emailed asking for feedback the afternoon of our check-out, and would like to commend the management for its commitment to improve.

Overall, the Hotel Charsfield was wonderful; thank you for a very memorable, romantic night out. <33

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2011

We stayed in the Charsfield for a couple of nights on a recent trip to Melbourne, having chosen the hotel based on the many positive Tripadvisor reviews, and looking for something other than the usual anonymous business hotel.

The Charsfield's location is lovely, on leafy St Kilda Road. It is an easy 3km walk into the centre of Melbourne, or you can hop on a tram almost outside the front door. Parking is available just around the corner for $20 a day.

The building is beautiful, full of charm and character as other reviewers have noted. However, be prepared to carry your luggage down long corridors and up flights of stairs, as there is no lift.

We had paid for a junior suite and were "upgraded" to a "slightly larger" one. It was nice to have space, but the room was tired and in need of a coat of paint, as well as a really good clean along the skirting boards and behind the desk. The bathroom was clean and sleek (somewhat at odds with the rest of the decor) but the shower went from lukewarm to scalding in about one degree of variation on the control.

It seems the Charsfield's management are trying really hard to do a good job and improve the hotel - in addition to replying to comments on Tripadvisor, we were impressed to receive a follow-up email from them immediately after leaving the hotel. As such, we would try the hotel again on a visit to Melbourne and would still recommend it (with some reservations) to others looking for something a little different.

Have stayed many times when in Melbourne. Advantages are wonderful old building and the ambience, well-appointed rooms, very good restaurant, great location on St Kilda Rd close to city by tram or walking, quiet during the day, friendly helpful staff and reasonable pricing. Only minor nuisances are the arrangement of the toilet in the downstairs rooms I usually stay in, and the limited free Internet limit.

Although I live in Melbourne, in Moonee Ponds, I thoroughly enjoyed a 'girls weekend" at the Hotel Charsfield. The minute you step through the iron gates, you find yourself in a peaceful oasis, away form the bustle of the city. The hotel is the oldest building in St. Kilda road and very well maintained. It was so much nicer to stay in a charming hotel full of character and history than one of the many impersonal 'boxes' that line the street. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed our drinks on the shady verandah and dinner in the restaurant. There are plenty of trams going right past the door to take you wherever you want to go, but we also enjoyed walking to the Botanic Gardens and Chapel St. I highly recommend this hotel.

Recently I had the pleasure of staying for 3 nights at the Charsfield in Melbourne. I found the room to be clean, quiet and comfortable.

The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent.

I would not hesitate in staying at the Charsfield in the future.

I recently stayed at Charsfield Hotel for the first time and received a complimentary upgrade to a Junior Suite. The room was clean and spacious, the staff professional and friendly and the location so accessible to the sights around Melbourne. My stay was too short unfortunately and definitely worth a revisit as I have yet to sample the restaurant and beauty/massage treatment! Thank you for a lovely time.

Room Tip: If you'd rather not walk up/down stairs request a room on the ground floor.
