“Great Staff, great location, not so great hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2010

Firstly would like to say that the staff at Citigate are excellent and go out of there way to accomodate you. The rooms look good on first inspection but are not 4.5 star standard, perhaps 3 star.
The room I had , had a fab view however the doors to the balcony wouldnt lock and because the windows are not double glazed the noise at night was horrendous! The TV was broken and a very pleasant man came to fix it, however I then discovered that night that the volume was fixed and wouldnt go up or down, also the remote didnt work! Also business centre computer didnt work either.

Room service was good and the food of a good standard.

The location of the hotel is great, close to everything but I wouldnt go back becasue of the noise isusses, esps when working and needing a good nights sleep! However if you need somewhere in the thick of it this might be the hotel for you.

Friendly staff, prompt room service, excellent location. Its directly opposite the Flinders Street Railway Station and near to Federation Square, which is the departure point if you join day tours from Grayline, and AAT Kings. Its also a stone's throw away from the free tourist tram stop. There are convenience stores and 3 supermarkets within 2 minutes of walking as well.

If you're into shopping, the main shopping belt is 2 streets behind the hotel.

If you want good food near the hotel, head to Degraves Street which is less than 30 metres away on the left of the hotel.

For the location, pricing is very reasonable and I really couldn't ask for more.

I stayed at this hotel for four days. The breakfast was so bland and they did not have much of a variety. Egs were runny, bacon was hard. The had a dish that lacked taste. I wish they would upgrade their breakfast considering that many tour companies use it to house the tourists. We were even given a torn towel. And on one night, there was something wrong with the air conditioning that I got up a few times feeling hot and miserable.

My friends arrived first and warned me that the room was small. The beds looked miniature and the water wouldn't drain out of the bath due to a a mass of thick blonde hair that the cleaners had missed from the previous guest. This should not happen! They moved us to a slighlty bigger room and after checking it out, we moved in. Only to find a dirty face washer on the coffee table left behind by cleaners/previous guests. We rang to notify that we would be cancelling our stay there and moved to a much nicer, cleaner hotel in little collins st.

We spent a couple of nights at the Citigate on a recent visit to Melbourne. After some research online I'd picked the Citigate because it had generally pretty positive reviews.

On the plus side the location is really great, walking distance to the shops, Federation Square, etc. Lots of cafes and restaurants round the corner and plenty of tram stops right outside if you want to hop over to other parts of the city.

Room wise, we'd paid a little extra for a city view room, and whilst I wasn't expecting a penthouse, I certainly wasn't expecting something with so little space that the double bed was pushed into a corner and only one of us had a bedside table. The person sleeping on the wall side had no bedside light, nowhere to put a glass of water, etc. and had to clamber out of bed at the end. The bathroom continued the Lilliputian theme with a midget sized bath and no room to swing the proverbial cat. I know all hotels have some small and poky rooms, it's just a shame that you never seem to pay a small and poky price for them.

However, what really put me off the Citigate was that they seem to be looking to make an extra dollar from you at every opportunity. I know phone calls are expensive in hotels generally, but $107 for a 15 minute call to New Zealand is beyond extortionate. Then there was the breakfast which appears to be advertised at $19 but is actually charged at $25 per person if you don't book in advance. Like the phone tariffs, the additional $6 charge for failing to reserve your buffet bacon isn't widely advertised.

The Citigate is a functional hotel in a good location, but in a city the size of Melbourne there are plenty of hotels in great locations. I'll be trying one of the others on my next visit.

Stayed here for a week. The hotel was modern and newly refurbished. The rooms were of a great size and the bathrooms were big for hotel standards. The concierge was so friendly and provided us with maps for all the great melbourne spots and even gave us some great local advice on the hotspots. Fantastic location and is convenient to everywhere in melbourne! Great Stay. Highly recommended!
