“Disappointing Stay. Not Hilton Class”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

On a recent business trip recently I had stayed at this hotel. The hotel is in an excellent location just opposite the Flinders station and has lot of restaurants and shops around. This is the only plus point of this hotel.

The hotel front façade was getting renovated so the entrance was basically a small door through the construction material. Pretty depressing feel. Once inside the reception was looking more like a bar and the hotel staff told me this is the theme. Anyway.. the reception is too small and crowded. Hotel check-in was no problem and I was given a complementary upgrade . The rooms are quite small and are noisy as the windows are not sealed properly. The furniture is modest and very sparse. The roof is quite low so you get the feeling of crampness in the room. Room amenities are kept to the bare minimum.
The buffet breakfast is complementary but again the quality is not good. The choices are limited and are repeated everyday. The staff is very limited and everything about the hotel gives a feeling of economy class. I have stayed in similar properties of Hilton but this one was very disappointing.

Given a choice I would not stay there again..

This newly renovated hotel is unfortunately an older building that can't be fixed with a cosmetic freshen up. Walls are thin, existing mechanical services are noisy, windows are old and not acoustically up to scratch. Whilst the rooms are new the furnishings are very plain save for the bathrooms where at least some effort was made. The hotel staff are nice but very few in number. I attempted to check out but after waiting for 15 minutes for the lone person on the front desk to work through both check ins and outs I left my room key on the counter and departed. I wont be returning. What a shame Hilton is no longer managing Hilton on the Park.

I'm not sure anyone really knew what was going on, the theme was inconsistent confusion - but it was clean, fit for purpose and in an excellent location with everything you need in easy reach.
Noisy 24/7 Aircon didn't help the jet lag but would stay again.

We arrived in a hire car and found it difficult to find somewhere to park you have to use the underground parking facility which is very expensive with hindsight we should have dropped the luggage off at the hotel and then taken the car back. the hotel is very central very comfortable and the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. We were only here
for one night before our onward journey to Sydney but we did have a comfortable stay.

When we arrived at this hotel about 9.30 on a day in early February, our first impressions were not favourable!! We had not been told by our travel agent that the hotel had changed from a Citigate to a Doubletree by Hilton, and was undergoing renovation. As our taxi arrived all we got was a view of white hoardings and the noise of drills. Our room wasn't ready, and we were very tired, having travelled overnight from Singapore. The receptionist suggested we upgrade, at a reduced rate, although the room would not be available for all the nights of our stay. We agreed, and were given lovely room overlooking Flinders street station, high enough to leave the noise of the street well behind. We were able as it turned out to keep the room for the 5 nights, and were pleased with that, as downgrading would not have been nice. I wouldn't want to be in one of the smaller rooms with no view.
The hotel is in a very central position, in easy walking distance of most of Melbourne's main attractions-the river, the Botanical gardens, the laneways etc. Ideal for a short stay, as we could often pop back to the hotel if we were tired.
We only ate once in the hotel restaurant, which isn't very big and is situated in the lobby, so isn't very attractive. My husband's meal was awful, and they were very apologetic and halved our bill. They also gave us a bottle of wine for our room. Te bar and breakfast areas are in the lobby too, and are not pleasant places to stop, not helped by the fact that the hotel was still being renovated so the lobby was like a building site. Even without this problem though, they are not attractive areas.
However, the hotel's position makes it ideal for a short stay, and the staff are great, putting themselves out to help(we had a problem contacting our shuttle transfer and the concierge couldn't have been more helpful) and attempting to make up for any shortfalls. The room we had was large and comfortable, with free wi-fi and lovely toiletries and towels ( but a very small wardrobe!).

Room Tip: Try and upgrade to a room facing Flinders street , on a highish floor.

Dear Biomedali,

I appreciate you taking the time to post on TripAdvisor following your recent stay with us at DoubleTree by Hilton Melbourne - Flinders Street.

While it appears your travel agent had not informed you of the final works being completed on the exterior front of the hotel, it is pleasing to read that my front desk team looked after you to ensure your time with us was enjoyable. I appreciate your feedback regarding your husband’s meal at Platform 270 restaurant and I will personally follow-up with our Head Chef to review.

Thank you again for taking the time to post. Wishing you safe travels.

Best regards,

Clinton Farley

This is a large well located city centre hotel which is near a circle tram stop and Flinders Street station. Ideally located for lunch venues but there is a little less choice in the evening for dinner as a number of the options are closed by then.

We had a Citigate room, which was comfortable and well sized. The bathroom had a shower over bath. The breakfast was quite good and reasonable choice.

There is a bar area for evening dining which we did not use other than a happy hour drink.
