“great location & great view with limited facilities !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

i stayed in this hotel for 3 nights.before booking i did lots of research about the hotel & I decided to pay for the city view room before reservation.I informed hotel through e-mail in advance about early check in and high floor room with city view but when i reached hotel at 10 am in morning,i came to know that check in will not be possible before 2pm.
Then came the next shocker, reception guy told me that rooms are not available on high floor so they gave me room on 2nd floor.Next day they gave me room on 8th floor(8002).the view from the room was great.i could see the flinder street station and melbourne sky line from that.
The down part was that even water bottle was not provided in the room, when i asked then i was told that it is chargeable.
The business center and the Gym was ok .
overall this hotel has good location!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: take room with city view on higher floors.

I selected this hotel on location after searching through the Entertainment Book. The rate offered was well below Wotif. Our room on the 10th floor had a view of surrounding buildings, was clean and well appointed. The staff were very professional and handled our baggage due to early check-in (Thrifty - Public Holiday required cars to be returned before 12 noon) and late check out for flights. Our room was spacious, the King size bed was comfortable, the Samsung LCD TV was brilliant for watching the football. There was a shower over bath with quality amenities. Proximity to the Flinders Street Station & trams a bonus for travel to Victoria Markets and Docklands. Surrounded by restaurants, food outlets and shops it proved to be a very worthwhile venue. Following lunch, snack Pizzas ordered on the Happy Hour menu at $10.00 were good value and the staff were efficient throughout our stay.
One criticism was the decor and the lack of paintings on the walls. We could have been in a room in any city in any country!

Room Tip: Request the high floor with uneven numbers for the window view! .

Stayed at the Citigate for 6 nights. Picked it for proximity to the Flinders St Railway Station as we had to go down to Frankston for a day. Room was reasonably clean but best feature was the friendliness of the staff. WE stayed on the 5th floor about half way back because we wanted to avoid the street noise. All good except for the evacuation one night when someone used their hairdryer in the bedroom setting of the fire alarm. Didn't use the restaurant but there are heaps of eateries nearby.

This hotel is in an excellent location and the rooms are clean however our room lacked was a window. The density of the city means the hotel is entirely built in on one side (if your room ends in "06" or if it's anywhere on the second floor, you will have no window).

We found it very disconcerting to have absolutely no natural light and unfortunately the room lights are incredibly dim too. We requested a room change which the hotel obliged to, but only on the second night of our stay - the first night they were booked out.

Staff were pleasant however many seemed under-trained. On several occasions we waited quite some time to be served at reception as even simple tasks would take two or more staff members to complete.

The bathrooms were a little strange too. They have very little vanity space and, despite plenty of vacant space on the walls, the towel rails are up one end of the shower. We found the towels would get wet unless the taps were only turned onto half volume.

Overall, the hotel rooms are clean and pleasant enough if you strike one with a window, but I wouldn't recommend Citigate as a hotel worth staying at.

This place has a great location - there's no denying that! Right opposite Flinders St Station and a few blocks from Bourke St Mall, you will be right in the thick of things. Suprisingly, the hotel rooms are very quiet given the location. But what this hotel offers in location it definitely lacks in style, cleanliness and detail. The rooms are tired, bathrooms fading (and in some cases mouldy) and the attention to detail is very poor. I have stayed in 3 different rooms now and one things for sure, they are consistent - consistently grotty! Chairs in all of my stays were filthy and the thing that brought me to post a review - opening a bottle of white wine from the fridge that has been replaced with water - I am not kidding! On the upside, there is a decent gym and the quality of in house food, whilst not up to 4.5 or 5 star standards, is very good value (provided you like good 'pub grub' and not something hotel 'gourmet'). Staff are undeniably friendly, I pity them in their terrible fabric shirts - they all looked like they needed a really good iron. All up, if you need a good night's sleep and you're not too fussy about decor and other details - try to grab a good deal on this hotel ( I wouldn't recommend paying more than $160 a night given the quality) - good luck!

Outstanding front desk service at this ideally located Hotel. From the friendly welcome greetings to the 'Can I help you sir?' everytine I walked though the lobby nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The room was great and super quiet at the rear of the Hotel for a great nights sleep. Superb central location - close to Laneways, Federation Square, Flinders Street Station and Southbank. Would recommend a stay to anyone.

Best location to walk to everything, trams and trains only 2 minute walk if you want to travel further or don't like walking. Room clean although quite small, we had a cityview room and looked out to Tennis Centre, Federation Square and Arts Centre, service good. Several restaurants within 5 minute walk.
