“Modern, clean (but compact) rooms in an outwardly plain looking building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

To view this accommodation from street level you could be forgiven for passing it by. The building itself looks like a converted old block of flats with a paint job. Parking is first come, first served squeezed up the left side of the complex. There's officially nine bays but by day's end three more can be pushed in around the back (which is the turnaround area as there's no room for passing).

Reception looks very low key but the lady was very hospitable. The stairs / corridors again are misleading as to what will be found upon entering the room. There is a public computer in the corridor with internet access though free wifi is also available within the rooms using the details found within the hotel booklet.

Our room was normally $195 for the three people. The entry is the living area / kitchen which had clean kitchen with all the necessary trimmings (oven, 4 hot plates, microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle, sink etc), small table and chairs for '4', a small couch and moderate sized flat screen tv. Bedroom 1 was a queen with ample hanging space and the ensuite (shared by all) which I must say was very small and probably the downside to the room. The basin is tiny and sits under the vanity mirror / cupboard so it's hard to get your head under there to rinse your mouth etc. The toilet is a bit of a squeeze (and I am lean) and the toilet roll fell of it's mounting (surely heard by others at 12am). I used the washing machine for one load and whilst it seemed to work fine when we returned later that day there was a sign saying out of order. How they figured that out I will never know (there were no instructions to say I did anything wrong). The shower cubicle isn't large and our shower head (whilst good flow and temp) would not stay horizontal so we had to leave it sticking up and shooting the water out further than usual. The other unusual feature is that should those in bedroom 2 wish to use the bathroom at night there is no door to bedroom 1 to screen entering the bathroom (dad didn't seem to care mind you).

Bedroom 2 has two singles. The room is a bit of a squeeze and you're doing well if you can easily access the hanging space. There's about 1.5ft at the end of each bed so no room for placing large suitcases flat on the floor. There are flat screen tv's in each bedroom.

Whilst the decor is very modern and first impressions are good, the room is very compact and not a lot of space to be had. They've done well with what little they had to work with. No views to be had and as we were there on a weekend there was no housekeeping.

Can't comment much on locality. My brother chose it for proximity to the hospital (where he is now working) in case he could not find a rental short term. Trams run 50m away but can't say how far the nearest stop is. The hotel grounds are uninspiring and the surrounding neighbourhood is unremarkable but the interior of the room is what ultimately leaves the impression. I can't say for sure I'd stay here again as I'd need to assess what else is around and how the prices compare.

Room Tip: Unclear if any rooms are necessarily better than others. No real noise of note, Quiet part of town...

This is a gem tucked away in a quiet street right on a tram line which gets you in to the city in ten minutes. Lovely comfy beds, functional kitchen, comfortable lounge furniture. Bathroom was a little tight with washing machine and dryer and tiny sink. Good large shower though. There is not 24 hour reception so if you are arriving early or late make sure you make arrangements prior to getting there as the front door is locked.

My family of four stayed at AOC while visiting Melbourne and found the place conveniently located, clean and welcoming.
AOC is nearby two hospitals in Melbourne including the Royal Children's Hospital but this should be a deterrent to guests as you cannot even hear the ambulance siren from the apartment. AOC is also nearby University of Melbourne campus.
AOC is nearby tram stop 57 that takes you into Melbourne CBD. This is convenient because then you can connect on the free circle tram that should cover most parts of Melbourne CBD.
AOC is slightly on the smallish side but with the original building like that, any bigger space would not have made sense. Having said that I must say the owners did a marvellous using every nook and corner of the apartment and it is well equipped with sufficient cupboard space.
For those driving, be warned that there are only ten car park spaces within the compound but this compound is not guarded hence open to the public. If you are coming home at night, there may not be enough space to park.

Room Tip: We preferred the higher floors, which means you need to carry your luggages up a few flights of stai...

Stayed for 3 nights in July 2012 as a couple. Excellent and modern apartments, very very clean. Excellent shower area with very strong hot water! Close to Tram that goes direct to City. Will book here again next trip to Melbourne.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment for three nights. The staff are nice, the rooms are reasonable in terms of fit-out, and the price was relatively inexpensive. However, my wife and I slept very poorly on all three nights due to the following acoustic issues:
- We were awoken several times due to people talking loudly and/or vehicle noise within the carpark area which is on the western side of the building (around 1 am and 2 am night).
- The wall seperating our apartment from the adjacent one must have a sound reduction performance (Rw rating) of less than 40, because we could hear word-for-word the conversation occuring in the adjacent apartment in the middle of the night. These late night conversations kept me us up for hours on end.
- A loud 'thumping' noise was audible when 'heavy' people walked down the corridor (must be a lightweight floor rather than a concrete slab.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the ground floor on the western side of the building (eg Room 6).

A family of 4 we stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment which was nicely furnished a modern.look - loved it. The beds were so comfortable and with good quality linen it made for great sleeps.
We flew into Melbourne quite early in the morning after a quite an early start we were all a bit shattered. We arrived at the Chapman at 10:30 in the morning and were able to check in straight away, this was awesome. The kids were able to chill out for a while before we hit sites of the city.
They also have free internet use which was a nice bonus. We were so happy with the accommodation that we ended booking another night there on our last night in Melbourne.
the staff were also very friendly. We are already planning our next stay Easter 2013.

As a parent required to make several trips to Melbourne for the Royal Children's Hospital for my little boy, I could not fault these apartments. Brand new, clean and within a few minutes walk from the hospital's front door, I couldn't fault the place.
I've stayed in quite a few apartments over the past year, and wouldn't even bother writing a review. The gentleman at front desk was ever so friendly, couldn't do enough for us, the beds were ultra comfy and it had EVERYTHING we needed for our stay. Kitchen was equipped with the works, there was a DVD player which my little boy was wrapped about, a washing machine AND dryer, and even a walk in robe!
Most important of all, I didn't have to drive all over the city for "key collection", they were there waiting for me at the actual apartments AND there was ample off-street parking, it's nestled in a lovely quiet street too. We had one of the front rooms and had no problems sleeping, it was really quiet.
