Owner description: Melbourne’s iconic Princess Theatre is regarded by many as Melbourne’s most spectacular landmark. Dating back as far as 1854, the theatre was purchased by Marriner Theatres in 1986 and plans were immediately put in place for its total refurbishment to ensure its future viability as a live theatre venue. The Princess Theatre reopened in 1989 with the musical ‘Les Miserables’ followed by ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ which established a new record for the longest-running show ever staged in Victoria. Today, it continues to host some of the world’s most renowned theatre productions.

“Stalls Area Cramped and a Fire Hazard”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

In late January 2013 my husband and I went to see the Jersey Boys. We had seats in the Stalls area that cost close to $300. All the seats were cramped and there were no aisles in the middle or sides of these very long rows. If anyone had to enter the row everyone had to get up and move as far back as possible. In our row room was so restricted that people had to vacate their seats to allow people to move in and out. This is clearly a fire hazard, and makes for very uncomfortable viewing of theatrical productions. It was impossible to enjoy the show under such conditions. We will never book a show at this theatre again. It is shocking to think that the authorities allow such seating arrangements.

“Jersey Boys @ Princess Theatre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

We missed seeing the 2009 season production of this show, but made sure we didn't miss it this time. Must say, we're glad we caught it. What a wonderful show in a wonderful venue! The Princess Theatre is a Melbourne landmark and absolute treasure. Yes, she's old and smallish, but such a marvellous place for an audience - great seats no matter where you are. A very intimate setting as you can be quite close to the stage. We adored the staging of the show and the wonderful performances. It was almost like being at a concert. The pace was fast moving and the story was told in an interesting and involving way. Even the sprinkling of swear words was appropriate in the context and not offensive in the slightest. I don't think the Princess would have minded at all! Ladies loos are a shocker, though - 3! Come on, twice that number would be barely adequate. Do yourself a favour and go at the restaurant or wherever before coming to the show otherwise you'll spend the majority of intermission in the queue.

“A Melbourne treasure.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

My first visit here was as a child to see Borovansky's Ballet. I have always loved the charm of the theatre, especially since it's revamp. A wonderful part of Melbourne's heritage. They do, however need more ladies loos!

“Jersey boys”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

brilliant show, everyone there was fantastic, the place is sllightly smaller than normal theaters but i think that adds to the atmosphere, very cosy, however during the intermission, hard to get a drink because there are so many people crammed into one small area, but the show was amazing, seating was good no matter where you are in the theater i think, had me singing all th way home

“A little tired but still beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

I saw Jersey Boys here and it was wonderful. As for the theatre itself, some public areas could do with some attention but I suspect these things can't be done without permission in a Heritate listed building.
