“Loved it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2011

Small boutique hotel in the laneway with a great central location, and a good size room. There was a nice touch - complimentary chocolates and fruit on arrival, and magazines in the room.
On the down side, coffee machine was not working at the breakfast but coffee shop is next to hotel, so you can get your fix straightaway:) Staff was very attentative but there was not enough spare blankets for guests and I missed out the first night. The next day they made sure that I got it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room to be away from the lifts

I spent two nights at the Hotel Causeway which is in a little side alley off Little Collins Street, near the David Jones menswear entrance. It is a fantastic location for shoppers or general sightseeing for Melbourne.
Reception was very friendly and efficient. Given two room card keys, one to keep in the room key slot and one to take with me I guess! The rooms have been recently renovated but not fully renovated. The carpet has been 80% replaced (central portion) so first impressions are good but they've left the old cream carpet as a border to the new carpet, so the old stains show up! But the room and bathroom were very clean. There is internet access but not free. I didn't try room service but it would be limited as there isn't an evening restaurant in the hotel, just a breakfast room. There are so many excellent restaurants in Melbourne why would you eat in the hotel?
The bed was rock hard, not even a millimetre of spring in it and the pillows were no better. It's a shame they didn't invest in better mattresses because it was very hard to get to sleep. The airconditioning didn't adjust to a warmer setting and so I was quite cold at night - and there wasn't an extra blanket in the cupboard although I could probably have got one if I'd asked.
The bathroom had been 95% renovated - not the floor, so the old grouting and tiles butted up against a brand new tiled bathroom that is quite funky for a budget hotel. I have stayed (and reviewed) the sister hotel Causeway Inn on the Mall and I would rate this hotel (the Causeway) slightly higher than the Inn on the Mall because the rooms are huge in comparison.
There was a gym but I didn't use it.
I'd recommend this hotel to the budget traveller for its location - that can't be faulted.

Booking process – I booked through their website which was easy to use – I just reserved the room and we paid after we stayed.

Location – can’t be beat. This is the thing that will (probably) keep me coming back – certainly I think it’s largely what you’re paying for. Just up from the Block arcade, across from DJs men’s store, in the middle of all the good shops.

Hotel layout - Rooms 221-226 face the quieter pedestrian laneway (221 backs onto the lift though). Rooms 226-229 face the road laneway (yes 226 fronts onto both). There are a couple more rooms that face over the side/back of the building but I’m not sure of their numbers – I was on level 2 where their space is taken up by the breakfast room.

Staff – the staff were warm, polite and helpful.

Room – bed was fine, kingsized, comfortable, pillows were just right, neither puffy nor flat. Two seats and a table as well as a large desk. There was a safe in the room which didn’t appear to work but we were only there for one night so we didn’t need it. Good thick curtains.
As above, 226 is a corner room and has a lovely 1930s windows curving around so it’s probably the cheeriest room in the hotel.
We booked an executive room but I can’t see that it gives you any extra room – it wasn’t pokey but for the price, I wouldn’t want one any smaller. Overall the room was much the same as any other mid-range hotel I’ve stayed in.

Bathroom - pretty good and clean.
Very picky, minor negatives – the grout around the bath tiling could do with a refresher, it was a little discoloured and a few bits were falling out. The door was also swollen at the bottom where someone had obviously overfilled the bath and flooded the place.
Hairdryer was pretty good, more powerful than usual (but not as good as my V8 I brought from home!)
There was a big shelf for all our toiletries.

Breakfast – cereals, juices, fruit, yoghurt, cold meats and toasts. No hot stuff like eggs and bacon but it was certainly enough.

Left luggage – no problem leaving our bag in storage until we picked it up later.

The only thing that Causeway loses points for is the noise – it’s not really bad, just enough to be annoying for a light sleeper like me. There’s no double glazing on the windows and the first time we stayed (room 28, not sure what level), I was woken a few times by distant music from the nightclub a couple of doors up. When I spoke to reception, they immediately moved us to a new room facing the pedestrian laneway and that was fine. This time we got give the 28 room again even though I’d asked for a quiet room and explained what had happened last time. I asked to be moved and the guy on the front desk put us in 226. Certainly I heard no music noise from the club, but there were still people wandering past and yelling during the night and also the garbage trucks / laundry services / DJs deliveries started at 6am (Saturday) - even heavier sleepers may get woken by this. Granted this isn’t a huge shock considering the hotel is smack in the middle of a busy city but there are measures that other hotels take to deal with this kind of problem (I’ve stayed at one under the flight path at Heathrow and didn’t hear a thing – quadruple glazing is a beautiful thing).

Value? We got the room for $169 which I thought was relatively good value, considering the location. The Royce had rooms on special for a similar price – they have much nicer rooms but are way down St Kilda Road.

Overall Yes, I’d come back if I could get one the 22-26 rooms room on a higher level to avoid the noise next time. The rooms are good, nothing exceptional but the location is what makes this hotel.

We stayed at hotel Causeway for 3nights over the new years period. During this time all hotels almost triple their prices so it was nice to find a decent hotel in this location for still a decent price. The rooms were decent size, clean & comfortable, complimentary bottles of water were provided as well as chocolate coated Macadamias. Room has a nice big window but view was just of an adjacent brick wall. Breakfast was fairly standard for this class of hotel, a good selection of cereals, juices, fruit & pastries. All in all it was a very comfortable stay for a very reasonable price. My biggest gripe was the enormous price charged for just 1hr of internet, hotel needs to get with the times in this regards. The location would be one of the biggest selling points, right near the Bourke st Mall and in Walking distance to most places of interest in Melbourne. I wouldn't hesitate staying here again when I'm next in Melbourne.

I'm glad I found this hotel, it is small but in an excellent location right in the heart of Melbourne's shopping district as well as being close by everything else - transport, eating, sporting venues etc.

The rooms were average size but I have no complaints there and the bonus was that the breakfast was included in the room rate - excellent value!

I will definitely be staying here again.

Causeway's location just a few minutes walk from the river and Flinders Street Station is ideal. Eating out was no problem as there's a good choice of restaurants to suit all tastes within a 5 to 10 minute walk. Breakfast was continental buffet with a good choice including fresh fruit.
Our room had all the amenities we expected and was a reasonable size, but was beginning to look a little tired.

Travellers should use this place only on a discount rate. It is very central, surprisingly quiet, and its staff are amiable, but it is no more than adequate for the money (charging exorbitantly for internet access ought to be a thing of the past in any decent hotel-and provision for parking should be included int he price)
