“Good, but not great!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

Stayed here for one night on recent visit to Melb. Was a little disappointed. Had to wait for 15 min at reception to check in, so the experience get off to a good start.
Stayed in a refurbed room which was good, but still a little tired and plain.
Location is good, break was also good.

My husband and I spent a lovely night here for our anniversary. We loved the ambience of the hotel and as it is an old building were not deterred by the smaller sized rooms. The bed was comfy, iPod dock available, cheap mini bar and sufficient wardrobe space. The bathroom was compact, but the shower was hot and lighting good (loved the magnified mirror at the basin for makeup) Concierge and front desk were polite and helpful with valet parking and luggage storage. Would stay here again as CBD position is great and room rates very reasonable.

As many of the previous reviews the location of this hotel is one of the best. Free city circle tram stops out the front, Flinders St railway is over the road and everything is within walking distance, including a pleasant walk to Southbank and the casino. Having read previous reviews my wife and I were prepared for the smallness of the room and also for the showerwater running out on the bathroom floor. Easily kept in control with a towel placed accordingly. The minibar was exceptionally cheap and the bar in the foyer was very comfortable and the staff pleasant.

Room Tip: Look for the specials

We stayed here for one night only to go to a concert ... small room with view of brick wall ... I think this was ok as room therefore had no outside noise from busy Flinders street .. being near the lifts though voices most of the night were heard so i would ask for a room away from lifts ..mini bar was reasonably priced for a change and bathroom was small but had what we needed, bed comfy with a pillow menu ..good size coffee cups too 12 oclock check out was nice .We met many people in the lift as you had to swipe your card to get it working and this required some concentration , some people were in lift for quite some time ..oh dear ...I got this hotel on an internet deal for $100 so I cannot complain at all but may have if i had paid over 200 ..room not 41/2 star and in need of plaster repair .. lovely bar area would like to come back there for a drink sometime.... valet parking $35 all in all close to the laneways .coffee shops etc but probably only a 1 night stay as any longer this room would be too confining for me

Room Tip: away from the lift and the main road

We bought the New Years Eve package which included a 2 course dinner and buffet breakfast, this is the second time we have stayed here, its in a perfect spot, close to everything. We love the character of the building, it is just beautiful.
The rooms are well appointed but small and they could do with up dating the TV's which is the only downside.
The dinner was a set menu with a choice of entree and main or main and dessert, we opted for the main and dessert, their were 4 -5 choices for main, only one vegetarian choice so I opted for that which was a mushroom risotto, my partner chose the steak, both meals were delicious and the service very attentive.
The breakfast was great.
We also used the valet parking, the service on checkout was fast and efficient.
Would definately stay here again.

The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of Melbourne, close to the lane way cafes for breakfast or lunch. The room is small and basic but functional for a single or couple with ample power points, good lighting and free Wifi (only 256kb but ample for most needs). If you want Marriott style luxury, this is not the hotel for you but it is good value for central Melbourne if you pay around $150/night.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

I stayed here 16-18 December and was very umimpressed with this hotel. I was expecting a lot better for the rating - I stayed in far superior accommodation in the UK which was rated 3 star. My main issue was that I arrived 11.30pm after a flight from Perth, and was tired and ready for bed. At 1.30am in the morning, I was woken up by incredible loud noise in the street outside my room. The room was vibrating and cement/dust was coming through the vents. I phoned reception to find out what was happening to be told that the City of Melbourne was doing roadworks directly outside and the hotel was not given advance notice. They apologised and hung up. OK this may have been out of their control, but no offer was made to move me. The noise/dust lasted for about an hour and half so as a consequence the first day of my stay in Melbourne was a blur. The room was very small, and I also found the shower flooded the bathroom floor. I expected a lot better for the price I paid and the only positive aspect of this hotel was its location. I would not stay at this hotel again.
