Stayed before here and was slightly underwhelmed and got that feeling again. There wasn't anything 'bad' about this place just don't know if I will rush back.
The hotel itself is in a very old and beautiful building. It certainly has character. It was a bit of a hike to our room because the building design isn't the modern efficient type. It has very large and long hall ways. The kids loved running down them whenever we went out.
We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit. Downstairs is a lounge, toilet and kitchen. A narrow staircase takes you up to the two bedrooms and bathroom. If you had heavy bags the staircase would be a challenge.
The main bedroom had its own tv with all the pay stations that were available in the main tv downstairs. However, yet another hotel that doesn't have any of the new free to air multi channels (how hard is it). The bed itself was 'soft', don't like that myself.
The second bedroom had a queen bed but it didn't really fit in the room that well. The window for the second bedroom is just one long window that extends down to the kitchen below. The gap was wide enough for our toddler to try the quick way down to the kitchen so we had to shut the blind the entire time.
The bathroom was fairly 'standard'. Taps in the middle of the bath are not the best design for the young kids but it was all okay.
They did have a DVD player with the downstairs tv.
The kitchen had dishwasher, microwave, oven, hotplates and big fridge. As always in serviced apartments no knife that could cut melted butter or microwave dishes. They had forgotten a tea towel as well. They did have more pots and pans then you normally see in these places.
Heating was a bit of an issue if you wanted to occupy the downstairs and upstairs at the same time. To get the bottom floor warm made the bedrooms 'tropical'. We are use to the cold so just kept the heating right down.
They have a central laundry and use was complimentary which was a plus.
Didn't get time to swim in the indoor heated pool but it looked very good. Of course due to the layout walked through the pool area to get out of the hotel from our room (it was the quickest way out).
We overlooked the railway line but couldn't hear a train. Very close to Spencer Street Station, tram stop, Crown, convention centre and Etihad Stadium. Coles was 10 minutes walk.
We had room service one night. Food was good and wasn't too expensive, compared to normal room service prices. The menu choices were however quite limited, the meals were rather small and there was no options for the kids.
My observation is that the number of staff at the hotel is very limited and each member of staff seems to have to undertake lots of different roles. This may be very efficient but I didn't see the smiling faces that you can see they make a big play of on their web site. Service seemed 'tired'.
So overall I think I have had better quality and value elsewhere in Melbourne but if you could stay here at a good price it is okay. We got the two bedroom place for $220 a night which is rather cheap for this place, especially as it covered Friday and Saturday night.
Room close to the lifts if walking is an issue
