When we first entered our "lovely room", the look and the smell of the place gave you the impression that it had indeed not been cleaned or refurbished since . . . 1864? Rusty pipes, dirty and stained walls, carpets, and bedding - the list goes on.
We seriously complained to the proprietor and were subsequenty given a larger and somewhat better room, that was still seriously dirty (a look under the bed revealed thick layer of dust and an empty coke bottle). That thick layer of dust was also to be found on skirtings and, in fact, any surface that cannot be reached by hand if you can't be bothered to either bend down or stretch up a little. The toilet was about as clean as a pub lavatory just before closing time (okay, that's an exaggeration, but not a great one). The longer we stayed in that room (three nights - ouch), the more broken things we discovered. At one point, I counted the number of ight bulbs that was still working, figuring that would be a quicker job than counting the blown ones. In the end I realised that only if you count the blown ones as well can you work out a percentage of blown bulbs. It was 50%. One could argue that, if we had stayed in the original room, there would not have been so many blown bulbs. This is true, but only because there were not nearly as many lamps in that first room.
And then there were that broken bed frame, the missing door knobs, lamp shades that fell off as soon as you touched them, and it really made me wonder why anyone would be happy for their property to just fall apart, like the owners of Georgian Court seem to be.
Melbourne, home of the "hook turn", is an interesting city, there is no doubt about that. Since we really had a hard time finding anywhere to stay in Melbourne, and settled for Georgian Court, we are not likely to come again, and instead stay in the countryside around Melbourne, where we found plenty of genuinely lovely and clean places to stay and loads family activities to entertain ourselves.
