“Crown Towers Hotel, just beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

My husband and I spent our 16th wedding anniversary in at Crown Towers Melbourne, we have been to some beautiful five and six star hotels in our time but this hotel was simply one of the best we have been to. We upgraded to a suite on the 21st floor. The room was just beautiful it was a very large room, the bathroom was just sooo impressive. I just loved the whole place it was certainly a hotel i would recommend to people.

My wife and I spent this Easter in Melbourne and stayed at the Crown Towers Hotel in Southbank.

We have been regulars at this hotel over several Easter holiday periods and have always enjoyed our stay and this time was no exception. As soon as you enter the foyer you are overwhelmed by its grandeur. The place is big, stunning and spacious with ceilings that never seem to end and the feeling of opulence and 5 star luxury is all around you.

Check in has always been quick with no fuss and everyone at the desk is always courteous and helpful. This was sheer paradise compared to the chaos at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore where we stayed at Christmas last year – what an unbelievable difference between the 2 hotels.

We had booked a corner king room but were offered an upgrade to a suite which we had no hesitation in accepting and ended up in a beautifully appointed room on the 26th. floor. Complimentary champagne and chocolates followed to give you that feeling of being a little special.

The suite was lovely and had a nice view. The king size bed was magnificent, the bathroom was a pleasure to use and the lounge room was a pleasure to be in when watching television or just relaxing reading the array of magazines on the coffee table.

Housekeeping was punctual and the girls were always pleasant and polite to talk to. There was never a morning where we didn’t hear a “good morning sir and madam” whilst making our way down the corridor to the lifts. This is not exceptional for this hotel – it is the norm.

The casino at Crown is the best in Australia. It’s big, clean and has slot machines and tables galore. It’s a non smoking casino which makes it so much more comfortable to be in if only you simply want to walk around to see the action without losing your hard earned money. Even though it is big it does get very crowded during the holiday period.

The hotel has undergone some pretty dramatic changes with respect to its eateries. Gone were the perennial “Georges” and “Margos” which we patronised every evening for dinner on previous stays. These restaurants have been replaced by other eateries which in our opinion even surpassed them. The “Pasta Express” for example is a wonderful eatery with an extensive menu and reasonable prices. We ate there every night and never had any reason to complain about anything. The food was wonderful. There are of course other casual and fine eateries which have been at the hotel complex for many years so there is no end of variety of food on offer from the cheap and reasonable to the very expensive depending on one’s tastes and budget.

Overall Crown is a hotel which leaves you wanting to go back again and again. We can’t fault it. It’s not cheap by any stretch of the imagination but then if you want to indulge yourself for a special occasion this is the place to go and the money spent is well worth it.

Thank you for your extensive comments after your recent stay at Crown Towers.

It is interesting to read of your impressions of the property today, when compared to years gone by and I appreciate that you feel the changes and upgrades that we have made are for the better.

I was particularly pleased to read your impression of the housekeeping staff, some of our hardest working yet least recognised members of the team. It will be a pleasure to share your feedback with them.

We look forward to welcoming you again and appreciate your continued support of Crown Towers.

Kind regards,

Stayed in twin Queen bedded room with hubby and teenage twins. When we first arrived and went through the entrance at the Atrium we thought we had arrived in a scene from Harry Potter. It was so magical looking. Overall great stay. Just a couple of small negatives area at window and desk in room had a strange smell like ammonia, admit we didn't complain about it to staff but since we have returned have noticed another review about offensive smell in room so may be something that needs addressed. A couple of the staff at pool area were a bit indifferent in their approach and unfortunately weren't very helpful. We were only allowed one locker key for 4 and as two of us were in the female changing room and not the male it was a bit difficult. I appreciate the pool may get busy but it was around 4pm and pool very quiet .
I think the hotel is very impressive but as stated in the title the reception area feels impersonal although I appreciate it is a very big hotel.Overall great experience but for families may choose another Hotel next time.

Here we are again, at this classy and elegant hotel next to beautiful Yarra River. It's been a while from our last stay so it was exciting to come back.
Our Premier KIng room was huge ( 45 square metres ) and had a million dollar view of the city, Yarra River and Bay. From 27th floor it looked gorgeous, especially at night...
Cleanliness - an absolute 10/10! Luxurious linen, wonderful soft king size towels, warm and fluffy bathrobes, bed and pillows to die for, deep soaking bath and a TV, and the list goes on.
Buffet breakfast ( $39 per person ) was lovely, lots of different hot and cold food, great selection and good quality. Service was a bit slow, we waited for our coffees for quite a while even that it was not a busy morning and only a few guests in the dining room. Apart from that everything was great and we enjoyed our breakfast while admiring the views of the Yarra River.
Highly recommended for any occasion, if nothing else, go and spoil yourself for no reason at all, just to experience this wonderful hotel and its helpful and friendly staff.
And being next to the Casino and shopping and many of restaurants and food outlets it's a real bonus. No need for umbrella or coat, it's all under one roof! It's fantastic!

Room Tip: High floor rooms recommended !

We have just returned from 5 nights of absolute luxury. The room was everything we had imagined and the view was spectacular. We were on the 19th floor with views to the City and to the Bay, perfect. We paid the extra for the Executive Club Suite and we weren't disappointed. It is worth the extra to use the facilities of the Crystal Club. Service was always excellent and whatever you wanted was provided. We will definitely book this again. The bed was so comfortable and the bathroom was stunning. Definitely recommend this hotel. Best we have stayed in in Melbourne so far and the location on the South Bank is ideal. We will be back.

Room Tip: Would definitely recommend requesting rooms at higher level to take advantage of the view and less n...

My husband booked a surprise and impromptu three night stay at Crown Towers for the Mothers Day weekend. Neither of us had stayed before although we had talked about it often. We were both so excited about staying there but I have to say in the end I was left feeling quite disappointed.

Upon entering, the lobby oozed luxury. The aromatic air caused a surge of excitement and expectation. This was going to be a fabulous weekend.

But...

Check-in took a long time - our pre-paid third party booking couldn't be found (we only booked through a third-party website because the Crown website itself showed no availability). I felt awkward 'hanging around' Reception for so long. It made me feel like the Hotel had a problem with us and I just wanted to get on with our weekend. We chose not to leave credit card details with the hotel for the bond due to previous experiences of the slow withdrawal of authorisation amounts (AVIS is a big culprit with this), so checking in as cash customers proved a complicated process.

Upon arriving to our twin room on the fourteenth floor, our initial impressions were positive. The room was spacious (compared to a room we stayed in recently at The Langham), the view over the complex toward the bay was nice and the bathroom seemed well appointed.

However, after settling in and while sitting on the bed, I noticed an offensive smell coming from the bed pillows. Their smell was pungent and foul, like they had been 'soiled'. The odour penetrated the air in the room, especially when the air-conditioning was turned off. It was quite disgusting really. A call to Housekeeping alerting them to the problem resulted in four of the pillows being replaced but the odour lingered around the bed heads. It made for an uncomfortable sleep and being five months pregnant, it caused a disagreeable nausea. My son's hair smelled like the offending pillows after his sleep which was very unpleasant. In retrospect, we should have requested another room but I just didn't want to spoil the stay by complaining.

Housekeeping was definitely not at five star level. Our used crockery and glassware (at the bar and in the bathroom) was not washed or replaced when the room was serviced each morning and the consumable toiletries (bath gels etc) were not topped up each time even though the originals had been used. The vanity and basins in the bathroom were not wiped down, left wet and untidy and we were only provided with a bath mat on the last night of our stay by the turn-down attendant. This level of housekeeping I would expect in a lower rated hotel but certainly not in this establishment.

There was a blown globe in one of the bathroom lights which we ended up reporting ourselves as clearly no one else noticed or bothered. On the surface it's not a big deal but it's the lack of attention to detail in a Hotel that promises so much more.

The swimming pool looked indulgent and inviting. The water temperature was pleasant but I wouldn't recommend opening your eyes under the water. Beneath the surface, the quality of the water was murky and stung the eyes, indicating some chemical imbalance. Also, the ramp entrance of the pool where the water meets the air, had an obvious build-up on the tiles and needed a good scrub. The steam room was good as were the change/restrooms but the wet toilet floors were a little hazardous, especially for kids.

Room service was good, although if you're a cash (and not plastic) carrying customer, be aware that you can't charge things to your room and you will need to pay on the spot. I found this surprising given that Crown insists on a $200 per night cash bond.

Checking out was an ordeal. We had been given a later checkout of half an hour which we did not avail ourselves to, instead choosing to leave at 10.30am, half an hour before the standard check-out time. The queue was long and our check-out process was unnecessarily complicated and time-consuming. I would expect Reception be fully staffed at the standard check-out time of 11am to more adequately cater to everyone leaving.

We couldn't avail ourselves to the express check-out as cash customers and the fact that it took over forty minutes to leave shows a level of mistrust for anyone who prefers to use cash over card. Understandably, check-out couldn't be completed until someone checked the minibar, but in this instance it had already been checked as we exited the room and was found to be intact. Obviously that staff member failed to report that to the appropriate area. It was only when my husband started to complain about waiting so long that a manager gave the okay for us to leave.

It's such a shame. We had such high expectations of the Crown experience and I really wanted to love this hotel. Our stay had been such a long time coming and we reserved it for a special occasion but we walked away feeling most disappointed. I don't think we'll return - we have stayed in other establishments where we have had a far superior experience. If we ever do, we'll choose a suite on a higher floor and hope that the extra money we pay delivers a finer experience.

Room Tip: Perhaps avoid the twin rooms - I think they might be a little neglected if not used too often.

Dear Rosie,
Thank you for your comments after your recent stay at Crown Towers.

While it was a pleasure to read of your impressions of the lobby, room and pool upon arrival, it was disappointing to see that we failed to meet your expectations in several areas during your stay.

The housekeeping concerns and delays for your arrival and departure have been shared with the relevant managers for follow up. I was aware of your comments relating to the smell in the room and when we investigated this with several Housekeeping Managers in attendance, were unfortunately not able to detect any smell. That said, the room has since had a detailed steam clean to ensure all is in order. Your experience certainly falls far short of the standards we pride ourselves upon and I regret any disappointment caused as a result.

While the frequency of our water testing for the pool exceeds council guidelines, I appreciate your observations about the state of the tiles particularly.

For cash paying guests, we apply the same policy that is standard to hotels both here and abroad whereby a deposit is paid upon arrival and you then pay as you go for services, as is outlined on our website. For the future, an easy way around this is to secure the room with a credit card and then pay your bill with cash as you check out, should you prefer this method, hence allowing you to charge services to your room as you choose.

I do hope we have the chance to welcome you back again in light of your comments, that we might restore your confidence in Crown Towers.

Kind regards,

We stayed in Crown Towers Hotel last year and were so impressed that i treated my parents to a night there this week for a special occasion, they said it was the best experience they have ever had! Rooms are lovely with stunning views, bathrooms are stunningly beautiful plus who wouldn't enjoy lying in the bath while watching TV! Would also recommend dining in the Conservatory restaurant for dinner, $95 each on weekends but worth every cent as food is beautiful - buffet style with an amazing choice of every kind of food you could want. Would definately recommend staying in the Crown to anyone - its luxury at its best.
