My wife and I spent this Easter in Melbourne and stayed at the Crown Towers Hotel in Southbank.
We have been regulars at this hotel over several Easter holiday periods and have always enjoyed our stay and this time was no exception. As soon as you enter the foyer you are overwhelmed by its grandeur. The place is big, stunning and spacious with ceilings that never seem to end and the feeling of opulence and 5 star luxury is all around you.
Check in has always been quick with no fuss and everyone at the desk is always courteous and helpful. This was sheer paradise compared to the chaos at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore where we stayed at Christmas last year – what an unbelievable difference between the 2 hotels.
We had booked a corner king room but were offered an upgrade to a suite which we had no hesitation in accepting and ended up in a beautifully appointed room on the 26th. floor. Complimentary champagne and chocolates followed to give you that feeling of being a little special.
The suite was lovely and had a nice view. The king size bed was magnificent, the bathroom was a pleasure to use and the lounge room was a pleasure to be in when watching television or just relaxing reading the array of magazines on the coffee table.
Housekeeping was punctual and the girls were always pleasant and polite to talk to. There was never a morning where we didn’t hear a “good morning sir and madam” whilst making our way down the corridor to the lifts. This is not exceptional for this hotel – it is the norm.
The casino at Crown is the best in Australia. It’s big, clean and has slot machines and tables galore. It’s a non smoking casino which makes it so much more comfortable to be in if only you simply want to walk around to see the action without losing your hard earned money. Even though it is big it does get very crowded during the holiday period.
The hotel has undergone some pretty dramatic changes with respect to its eateries. Gone were the perennial “Georges” and “Margos” which we patronised every evening for dinner on previous stays. These restaurants have been replaced by other eateries which in our opinion even surpassed them. The “Pasta Express” for example is a wonderful eatery with an extensive menu and reasonable prices. We ate there every night and never had any reason to complain about anything. The food was wonderful. There are of course other casual and fine eateries which have been at the hotel complex for many years so there is no end of variety of food on offer from the cheap and reasonable to the very expensive depending on one’s tastes and budget.
Overall Crown is a hotel which leaves you wanting to go back again and again. We can’t fault it. It’s not cheap by any stretch of the imagination but then if you want to indulge yourself for a special occasion this is the place to go and the money spent is well worth it.
