I stayed here in November 2013 as a single traveller in a 6 bed female dorm. I was the first one to check in and I actually had the whole room to myself for about 4 nights before one chinesy lady came in, stayed 2 nights then left. I then had a french girl, a kiwi and an australian in my room for the remainder of my stay but it was nice having different people to chat to after being alone for so long! :) Room was spacious, even with the 3 bed bunks in it. Had ample storage space with a shelving/hanging unit in between the 2 beds at the back of the room which also had extra blankets on. There were lockable lockers in the room also. Loved having a TV in the room! A luxury bonus after staying in other hostels which only had one communal television area.
The breakfast was basic but you could have as much toast/cereal/juice/tea/coffee/hot chocolate as you wanted. You could also have hot drinks throughout the day which was a nice touch. The slight downside was having all but no cooking facilities except a microwave a toaster and a sandwich maker!! :/ Not good when you're a budget conscious traveller relying on at least a hob to make your 2 minute noodles!! And the area the Hotel is in isn't exactly backpacker friendly!!! :( But a lovely area all the same, I spent 1day just wandering around Pahran admiring all the expensive shops and the little bit of graffiti. I really suggest you get lost here as it's a great way to discover Melbourne south of the Yarra River and to see if any of those expensive restaurants do any meal deals ! I suggest you visit The Groove Train Pub as they do half price house wine after 5pm ( I think! ) they also do good food.
The location of Hotel Claremont is great for getting to the CBD as both the train station and tram stop are located within 2minutes walk and are very frequent. (The little visitor's guide in the bedrooms gives advice on which trains to get to the city and back). You need a Miki Card to travel on all public transport in Melbourne (basically just like an Oyster Card in London) and you can top this up at various 7-Elevens around Melbs/Pharan area as well as at the main tram stop just at Fed Square. (Takes cash/card. Minimum on card is $10.)
I loved staying here and highly recommend it and would very much like to stay here again ! :)
