“Really great location and atmosphere!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

I stayed here in November 2013 as a single traveller in a 6 bed female dorm. I was the first one to check in and I actually had the whole room to myself for about 4 nights before one chinesy lady came in, stayed 2 nights then left. I then had a french girl, a kiwi and an australian in my room for the remainder of my stay but it was nice having different people to chat to after being alone for so long! :) Room was spacious, even with the 3 bed bunks in it. Had ample storage space with a shelving/hanging unit in between the 2 beds at the back of the room which also had extra blankets on. There were lockable lockers in the room also. Loved having a TV in the room! A luxury bonus after staying in other hostels which only had one communal television area.
The breakfast was basic but you could have as much toast/cereal/juice/tea/coffee/hot chocolate as you wanted. You could also have hot drinks throughout the day which was a nice touch. The slight downside was having all but no cooking facilities except a microwave a toaster and a sandwich maker!! :/ Not good when you're a budget conscious traveller relying on at least a hob to make your 2 minute noodles!! And the area the Hotel is in isn't exactly backpacker friendly!!! :( But a lovely area all the same, I spent 1day just wandering around Pahran admiring all the expensive shops and the little bit of graffiti. I really suggest you get lost here as it's a great way to discover Melbourne south of the Yarra River and to see if any of those expensive restaurants do any meal deals ! I suggest you visit The Groove Train Pub as they do half price house wine after 5pm ( I think! ) they also do good food.
The location of Hotel Claremont is great for getting to the CBD as both the train station and tram stop are located within 2minutes walk and are very frequent. (The little visitor's guide in the bedrooms gives advice on which trains to get to the city and back). You need a Miki Card to travel on all public transport in Melbourne (basically just like an Oyster Card in London) and you can top this up at various 7-Elevens around Melbs/Pharan area as well as at the main tram stop just at Fed Square. (Takes cash/card. Minimum on card is $10.)
I loved staying here and highly recommend it and would very much like to stay here again ! :)

Depends what you're looking for really - it's in a decent location, right next to a metro stop, the rooms are clean, and there's a good breakfast. However, it's very much a hotel which has a few dorm rooms, and so there isn't really a fun backpacking atmosphere. Also the staff were a bit surly at times! Other than that, perfectly decent place.

I arrived at the hostel and was quite impressed by the exterior and the reception room. The receptionist was very helpful and told me all about my room and the facilities available. I had booked a bed in a room with 6 people but there was only 1 other person when I arrived. The room was quite big and there was room for all my stuff and room to hang things up. There was a tv in the room and a fan and sockets to charge things.
The bunk beds were quite comfortable and everyday the sheets were changed and clean towels were provided, you even got a bar of soap everyday. The bathrooms were always really clean and the showers were good. Breakfast was available every day in the canteen, there was quite a good selection for a continental breakfast and people in the hostel seemed friendly and would talk over breakfast. The staff were also very helpful and friendly.
It is located about 50m form South Yarra station which is another plus.
I was very impressed by this hostel and would definitely stay here again, for the money I paid I couldn't fault it at all, this is why I have given it a full 5 star rating.

for some reason, i could not get the hot shower to work at night. i had to bathe in freezing cold water for 3 nights. other than that, the reception people are very friendly and helpful although they all look very grumpy and unhappy about something. it would be great if they could have lift or something. the free breakfast is good. the free wifi is a big headache though. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. overall, not a pleasant experience

Tram and South Yarra Railways Station are just , literally, outside the doorstep. Convenient store is just across the street. Kitchen facilities to do your own cooking with several locked big frigdes to store your groceries. Cool enough during the summer , as long as you don't let the hot air outside in. Bathroom very clean and done daily. Beautiful and old suburban district with character. $15.00 cab ride from the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

Just spend 5 nights at the Claremont and for what it is it was great value. Can be a bit noisy as you can hear people walking past your room at night but for the cost of A$74 per night this was fine. Single room was small but had a TV and the toilet/shower are not far away and staff kept the bathrooms clean. The continental breakfast was great, able to sit and eat and read the paper. Staff were friendly. I would certainly recommend this place to friends.

I had friends from the UK come over and wanted a cheap but clean hotel near a station so to get in and out of the CBD.

The Claremont is on Toorak Road, South Yarra

I took them to the Claremont to have a look and they liked what they saw and were given a lovely clean room just right for their one week stay.
The price included breakfast.
The bed was clean the sheets were cleaned and my friend he checked the bed very carefully.

It is only a minute from South Yarra rail Station and the Tram number 8 outside the station. perfect location.

Lots of restaurants and cafes, Chapel Street minutes away by foot.
They thoroughly enjoyed going to my friends café Splash juice bar in Como shopping centre, Toorak Road, South Yarra. Value for money for breakfast, lunch.

They were extremely pleased and every day they would jump on the tram or train to the CBD and do their thing.
They and I would recommend to people on a tight budget to have a look at the Claremont as it is not to everyone's liking.

Room Tip: Ask to look at the rooms first of all. Check out a couple of the rooms and ask to see the serviced r...
