“Excellent for backpackers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

I put myself and my friend up here for a couple of nights. Compared to my experiences of hostels in Europe, this was exceptional. The rooms were clean, beds were comfy, with beautiful Victorian high ceilings and the bathrooms always looked just-cleaned. We had a fridge in the room which was very useful, and got onto wifi okay. I got a bedroom on the second floor with one wall on Toorak street, and the noise was quite bad during the night. The windows let all the noise through, and i didnt sleep well as a result.

Also, for what we paid, we could have been in a four star hotel, had i booked with an internet offer somewhere else.. and this really is a hostel (unfortunately it was last minute, and some of the cheaper rooms were booked already). I definitely expect a bathroom to ourselves for that price, so that was a shame. Price was probably inflated due to location also - South Yarra is a great location, and if I hadnt been specific about being THERE, i would have been looking for a higher brow hotel with an offer online..

For a hostel, its great. Amazing even. For a hotel.. no way. And i think I am definitely more of a hotel girl..

Room Tip: I got a bedroom on the second floor with one wall on Toorak street, and the noise was quite bad.

This place has the basic features of a backpackers' hostel (shared bathrooms, dorm room/bunk options, good rates), but without the grimy/slightly shady feel that a lot of backpackers' have! Huge positives: the room and bathrooms were spotless, service was good, and a basic breakfast was included - cereals, tinned fruit, juice and tea and coffee, with the option of toast with condiments. There was also free wi-fi.
The location is top-notch: Toorak St in South Yarra, close to hundreds of shops and good restaurants, and about 50m from the South Yarra train station so it's really easy to get into the city for sightseeing.
The only downside was that there was no parking. I came by car and ended up parking at a nearby shopping mall's parking lot, which turned out expensive. I would recommend coming here by public transport if possible.
Overall, because this was a really positive experience I am going to continue staying over here when I need a place to sleep in the city.

Although they claim it is a hotel, it is more of a backpackers. Hard to find entrance leads you to an old Victorian building with a sweeping staircase. Free buffet breakfast with cereal, toast, juice - if the staff feel as if you eat too much for breakfast, they just leave out a loaf of bread. Rented tiny room with bunkbeds that overlooked an ugly rooftop. Not the most attractive view. Communal TV and books. Nothing but a bed in your room. Shared toilets and showers. Had to go through the toilet rooms to find one that was the least disgusting. Sometimes toilets remained that way for 2 days - evidence of their cleaning schedule. However, when complained to desk staff, it was cleaned.

My wife and I stayed there for 3 nights in winter.

Positive:
Really nice victorian style hostel! Staff is friendly, breakfast is really good, nice location near tramway stop, free wifi!

Negative:
In winter, the rooms can be cold even with the heater on. Standard double rooms are really high but really small. It can be noisy at night when other travellers come back at night at 2:00 or 3:00 am slapping doors all the time.

We stayed here after an awful night's sleep in a dorm room in St Kilda; the cost for two people in a dorm got us a private room in the Claremont so I would definitely say to couples travelling in Aus that you should consider this option.

Okay, so the rooms aren't the most spacious but the beds are comfy, there is a television with loads of channels and the place is absolutely spotless. In fact, it seems like the cleaners never stop working all day. There is also breakfast included which is only cereals and toast but they get really nice bread from the nearby bakery and you get condiments, fresh juice and tea/coffee. You can also have unlimited hot drinks throughout the day.

We ended up staying here for ages as we kept extending our stay as we were looking for jobs/somewhere to live in Melbourne so got to know the staff quite well and they're pretty much all so friendly and helpful. This also meant that we probably stayed in about 5 rooms all together and I will say that there is a lot of inconsistency across the rooms. Some are far bigger with clothes rails and fridges whilst others are basically just a bunk bed in a tiny room. Also, in the summer the rooms are soooo hot and stuffy - they do provide a fan but it doesn't really help.

The bathrooms are always immaculate and there are enough that you don't ever really have to wait to use the shower (The bathrooms are shared.) Plenty of school groups stay here which some of the other reviewers criticised but it's fine as obviously there are teachers there ensuring that they're not noisy/messy which is more than can be said about the people who frequent hostels ha!

Would definitely recommend this place and wouldn't hesitate to stay here the next time we visit Melbourne, it's next door to the train station which takes you about 10 mins to get to city and it's round the corner from Chapel St which is awesome.

Words cannot describe how amazing this hotel/hostel was! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful! Even though this hotel is large, the staff recognizes you and makes you feel like your stay is personal. Regretfully, we had already booked our Great Ocean Road tour because I truly believe they would've had great recommendations for different tour operators.

The rooms were TINY; however, they were suitable and clean. They have done a great job at maintaining the history of the building while keeping it updated and modern. The bathrooms were immaculate! I am a harsh critique of bathrooms, and I couldn't find a fault with these bathrooms. They clean the bathrooms twice daily to ensure that they are clean-- THANK YOU!

The location isn't too bad, just know that you will need to train into Melbourne CBD to see everything and experience the city. The train is a short 2 minute walk from the hotel door. Additionally, you will need to taxi or bus from the airport-- you can use public transport but there is a lot of transferring involved.

The Claremont sits in a great little area-- we LOVED the food around the area, especially SPUDBAR!. There was a great little Thai place as well down the road from the Claremont.

Beware if you are in one of the higher floors, you will have to carry your luggage up-- there are no elevators.

Breakfast is your traditional hostel cold breakfast- toast, cereal, and a few fruits. Thanks for the free wifi-- it made life really easy!

You actually never feel like you're staying in a hostel-- you feel like you're in a 3 to 4 star boutique hotel.

This place is pretty awesome. Really cheap for a double room so if you are sick of hostel dorms then this place is perfect. Nice old building and friendly, eccentric staff.
Really good free brekkie and unlimited teas and coffees all day and night.
Great location, right by chapel street or next to train and tram stood for the city.
