“Great for a budget traveller”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

We stayed here after an awful night's sleep in a dorm room in St Kilda; the cost for two people in a dorm got us a private room in the Claremont so I would definitely say to couples travelling in Aus that you should consider this option.

Okay, so the rooms aren't the most spacious but the beds are comfy, there is a television with loads of channels and the place is absolutely spotless. In fact, it seems like the cleaners never stop working all day. There is also breakfast included which is only cereals and toast but they get really nice bread from the nearby bakery and you get condiments, fresh juice and tea/coffee. You can also have unlimited hot drinks throughout the day.

We ended up staying here for ages as we kept extending our stay as we were looking for jobs/somewhere to live in Melbourne so got to know the staff quite well and they're pretty much all so friendly and helpful. This also meant that we probably stayed in about 5 rooms all together and I will say that there is a lot of inconsistency across the rooms. Some are far bigger with clothes rails and fridges whilst others are basically just a bunk bed in a tiny room. Also, in the summer the rooms are soooo hot and stuffy - they do provide a fan but it doesn't really help.

The bathrooms are always immaculate and there are enough that you don't ever really have to wait to use the shower (The bathrooms are shared.) Plenty of school groups stay here which some of the other reviewers criticised but it's fine as obviously there are teachers there ensuring that they're not noisy/messy which is more than can be said about the people who frequent hostels ha!

Would definitely recommend this place and wouldn't hesitate to stay here the next time we visit Melbourne, it's next door to the train station which takes you about 10 mins to get to city and it's round the corner from Chapel St which is awesome.

Words cannot describe how amazing this hotel/hostel was! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful! Even though this hotel is large, the staff recognizes you and makes you feel like your stay is personal. Regretfully, we had already booked our Great Ocean Road tour because I truly believe they would've had great recommendations for different tour operators.

The rooms were TINY; however, they were suitable and clean. They have done a great job at maintaining the history of the building while keeping it updated and modern. The bathrooms were immaculate! I am a harsh critique of bathrooms, and I couldn't find a fault with these bathrooms. They clean the bathrooms twice daily to ensure that they are clean-- THANK YOU!

The location isn't too bad, just know that you will need to train into Melbourne CBD to see everything and experience the city. The train is a short 2 minute walk from the hotel door. Additionally, you will need to taxi or bus from the airport-- you can use public transport but there is a lot of transferring involved.

The Claremont sits in a great little area-- we LOVED the food around the area, especially SPUDBAR!. There was a great little Thai place as well down the road from the Claremont.

Beware if you are in one of the higher floors, you will have to carry your luggage up-- there are no elevators.

Breakfast is your traditional hostel cold breakfast- toast, cereal, and a few fruits. Thanks for the free wifi-- it made life really easy!

You actually never feel like you're staying in a hostel-- you feel like you're in a 3 to 4 star boutique hotel.

This place is pretty awesome. Really cheap for a double room so if you are sick of hostel dorms then this place is perfect. Nice old building and friendly, eccentric staff.
Really good free brekkie and unlimited teas and coffees all day and night.
Great location, right by chapel street or next to train and tram stood for the city.

Lovely old building ,has been well treated for it's years ,very clean and well presented.Great friendly staff.Had a room with bathroom ,nice facilities.Bathroom modernized but sadly no where to hang a towel to dry .It would be nice to have a chair to sit on after returning from long walks around this wonderful city, even a plastic folding chair would be great.Being an older person i tended to find it a little bit noisy from street traffic.

Upon arriving in Melbourne after 3 months in Asia, we decided to try and find a place to stay that was not full of partying young people. And also with a private room, to be able to relax when we arrived. We were very lucky with the Claremont guesthouse. We got a twin room for a very reasonable rate. It was a clean and pleasant place to stay, only minutes walk from south yards station and of course chapel street. There was always a helpful member of staff at the 24 hour front desk.
The only negatives were firstly the too was quite small, with a set of bunks in there, it wasn't the most spacious for 2 girls with plenty luggage! However it was clean, and comfortable. Secondly there is limited cooking facilities for guests. There is no hob or oven for use, this did not affect us as we only stayed for a shot period, but may be an issue for long term guests.

Overall I would recommend this to people looking for a hostel in Melbourne.

Stayed in a lot of hostels and fancy hotels and this place is in a league of their own. Very clean, warm and friendly. Stayed in double room for 2 nights bathroom close by and all to ourselves. They even had fresh bread and sultana bran for brekky. I could live there.

Highly recommended basic accommodation. Staff very friendly and efficient. Convenient location. Nice old refurbished building. Continental breakfast and wifi and newspapers a real bonus. Stayed twice, smaller rooms a bit cosy but okay for the price. Shared facilities as clean as one could expect. Have stayed twice, will do so again. Parking arrangements convenient and quite cheap for the location.
