“Quaint old building that suits the purpose”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2011

We were in Melbourne for the Grand Prix last weekend and all the Hotels bump up their prices considerably. We were lucky to get this place which is in the heart of the shopping / restaurant precinct and a moderate walk to the race track. Cheap accommodation for Melbourne. It's really an upmarket hostel / backpackers but clean and providing all the basic facilities. Friendly staff , basic breakfast ( included in room rate ) but adequate. Close to train and tram transport, but would be a nice walk into the city if you are young and fit enough. Has old building charm but can be very noisy depending on your time of stay and location of room. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. The bunk bed room is tiny so pay a bit extra and get a bigger room ( OK if you're a single traveler ) Shared bathrooms are kept clean. Good value and we would stay here again if need be.

Hotel Claremont has all the appearances of a hotel, but is much more like a quieter backpackers hostel with dorms and small private rooms. Our double bed almost took up the entire room and the TV didn't work but the bed was comfortable and the location is very good. Breakfast is more than adequate. This is a good cheap hotel if you're travelling, but not if you're looking for something luxurious. It was quieter than I expected, the main noise being the sound of the Australian Grand Prix, taking place at the time (and which you could hear all over Melbourne!)

Lovely hostel with nice rooms, comfortable bed and TV. Bathrooms always kept very clean. Good breakfast with cereals, toast, fruits, tea, coffee and fruit juice. Easy to get to the city as the hostel was only 2 minute walk from South Yarra train station which takes less than 10 mintues to get to Flinders Street station. Only complaint was this hostel was on a very busy road and there is a lot of traffic noise. Take some ear plugs to help you sleep at night! The hostel would benefit from double glazed windows. If you want a peaceful place so stay, while this is not a party hostel, I found the traffic noise to be annoying at times.

This is such a great guest house, great location......just catch the number 8 tram to get to the CBD or quicker still jump on the train which is less than 5 minutes walk away. South Yarra is a great place too, chapel street has plenty of shops and restaurants to keep you content. We went as a couple and were a bit worried about the bunk bed situation as well as the shared bathrooms...the bunk beds were amazing!! Would be doing this again for sure..maybe on the honeymoon??Shared bathrooms were always kept clean so that was no problem. Cant really comment on the staff as we only checked in and out with them we didnt need there help for anything. The only negative point is that there is no air conditioning (well not in my room) but there was a stand alone fan....which in 40 degree heat isnt too good.. I will be back!!!

We stayed here in December and the guesthouse itself was great. The staff were friendly, the room was big, clean and reasonably priced for the location (close to Toorak Road and Chapel Street). There are some great little food places nearby and the train station is less than 5 minutes walk away (a big plus when carrying heavy bags!).

My only complaint with the room was not entirely the guesthouse's fault. As it is on a road with a tram line, you often hear the trams going down at night. It was so hot that it's impossible not to sleep with the windows open. We only had a fan to cool the room and it wasn't really sufficient. After a day we discovered that propping the door open when we were in the room cooled it down a lot, so I think if you get a room set further back from the road you should be ok (we were right at the front).

The bathrooms were clean but we stayed the same night as a bunch of scouts/guides or something, so there weren't always enough of them at that point. There is also no lift, so think carefully if you have heavy bags.

Free breakfast was good, but if you're self-catering this is probably not the place for you unless you're living on microwave meals. There was no hob, just the microwave, a fridge and a sink.

I can't big up the location enough - it's a very short train or tram ride into the city and there are so many local shops and restaurants within walking distance. It's only rubbish if you have your own car as there is no parking at the guesthouse or within the local vicinity.

I'd definitely stay here again.

the location of Claremont is brilliant and it is very easy to get into the center of Melbourne, I loved South Yarra itself though the area has a buzz to it as well as everything you could possibly need within walking distance
the hotel itself seemed very clean and seemed to have a strong intrest in the upkeep of the facilities for there customers although it is a quieter guest house without much going on at night time i have found i prefered this to some of the more lively hostels however if lively is want you will find it less than 5 mins walk from the front door so really is the best of both

We stayed in a twin room (one bunk-bed) at Claremont, in the trendy Melbourne suburb South Yarra. Location is excellent, with great bars, restaurants and shops, South Yarra station is a 1min walk away, and a few minutes later you're in the heart of the city.

The hotel/hostel, however, was not so great. The room was tiny (no way near large enough for 2 people sharing), no air-con (we had a dinky little fan) and at no time we were there (for 5 nights) did they change the bins or towels (which they promise in their literature). Internet is expensive ($6 per hour) and you are limited to what type of pages you can view (no video, for example). The computers we used crashed repeatedly and LGBT sites are blocked.

It's a lovely old building, however, and the staff are very friendly and upbeat.
