“Get the upgrade no matter what”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2009

This is a very historic hotel (read: old) and is in the process of getting a facelift. Upon check-in at the lobby, you immediately realise you should have gotten the upgrade to the newer rooms. Looking at the lift you will doubt your choice of the hotel but not too worry, the upgraded rooms are clean and comfortable enough. Just be prepared for a long walk to your wing. Great value for the location but beware of the nasty assistant manager who's curt service lets down the reputation of this fine establishment. The rest of the front desk staff could also use a training in customer service.

This was our second stay at the Victoria, more than anything we love the location and value.
No, it's not the most exclusive hotel in the Melbourne CBD but in terms of lacation, you would be hard pressed to find a better hotel, she is literaly a stone throw from Swanston St.
We stayed in the renovated wing and was pleasantly surprised. The room was very clean, the bathroom was imaculate with a nice shower, hair drier etc. The room was not massive but had plenty of room for my little family and the bed was comfy.
Can't say too much about the view, we looked into the central void.
Our room had a nice large LCD TV mounted on the wall and the reception was good.
Checking in and out was a breeze and the stall were very friendly and helpful.
It's not the place I'd take your partner for a romantic evening but if you want an unpretentious, comfortable, clean and value room in a great location, in a fantastic city, look no further.

My partner, friend and I stayed at the Victoria Hotel for two nights to explore the city. I booked the heritage suite after being impressed by how the hotel was portrayed on the internet. Little did i know it was all a complete fabrication of what it was in reality. The reception decor was akin to that of a brothel with the receptionists being anything but friendly. we had to travel up two different elevators to our room where a queen and a single bed had been squeezed Into. The lights didn't work properly and the flat screen TV only had two working channels. there was no room service and house keeping closed at 4pm. So tough luck if you wanted a fresh towel for your shower. The facilities left much to be desired with the "sauna" being a breeding ground for all types of bacteria so be sure to wear your thongs! Or maybe some work boots to avoid being stabbed in the foot by one of the many rusted nails lying on the ground. The "buffet breakfast" tasted like it has already been digested, as the watermelon tasted like bacon and the bacon tasted like beef, you think at $16 a head, the cook could take more care with cross contamination. Rest assured we canceled it for the next morning and had a proper coffee and muffin at starbucks which was delicious! The receptionists were of absoloutley no help when asked where a good restaurant was we were told " um i dunno, there just kind of all round" . However the worst is yet to come. On checking out the next morning we arrived back from starbucks half an hour before checkout time. We took the two different elevators up to our room and found the swipe key was malfunctioning. so we went all the way back down to reception where we were told that it had been deactivated because we were meant to be checked out already. This was at 10:45am(15mins till check out). He "fixed it" and we returned to our room to find it was still not working. So down we went again. This time the arrogant receptionist had finally decided to get of his back side and help us. Overall It was a massive letdown. we are just thankful we only needed the room to sleep as we were off seeing sights for most of our stay. BUT PLEASE DON'T HAVE YOUR HONEYMOON, ANNIVERSARY OR BIRTHDAY HERE AS YOU WILL SURELY REGRET IT!!!!!!!

Thank you for your feedback. Sorry you feel the hotel is a mess, but this grand old lady is in the midst of a major renovation. By the end of 2009 over half of the hotel will have new rooms, plumbing, ducted air conditioning and furnishings. You can see these new rooms on our website and you can also book via either the website or contact the hotel directly. I regret you found the staff less helpful than you wanted, I will use your comments to aid staff training, they were most useful. Thank you once again for your feedback and we do hope you welcome you back to The Victoria Hotel.

Staying at the Victoria Hotel was absolutely awful experience. We booked a non-smoking room over 2 months in advance. The hotel told us that "oh well, we're full up and only have smoking rooms, you'll have to wait until tomorrow." We waited until the next day, only to find that our "smoke free" room was on a smoking floor, with a shower that didn't work and the door was broken. We told the front desk about the problems and were told "you'll have to wait until tomorrow to have the shower fixed."

When we complained to management, we were offered no apology or compensation for our troubles. We talked to the actual manger of the hotel who told us that basically not only were we liars ("customer's lie") but that he knows he is a rude man and that's why he manages a low quality hotel. So not only did my family and I hate the hotel- but apparently the manager of the hotel thinks it is low-class as well.

All we wanted was a clean, smoke free room with a bathroom that worked- and we got none of that, no apology and no compensation. Our room was a "non-refundable" so basically, they felt that they could treat us poorly because they already received payment.

The hotel manager kept saying that the hotel was beneath our standards and that's why we didn't like it. We were not expecting a luxurious hotel as we were taking day trips and were not even in the hotel a majority of the time. Had we received an apology the first day, and had the different managers been consistent with their explanation of problems, we would have been appeased and moved on- not raving about the hotel, but not complaining either. Now, I'm going to make a point to let people know what a bad experience this was.

*all of the "amenities" listed, you had to pay for: parking, internet, etc. And they weren't cheap.

We stayed at the Victoria for a couple of nights in May 2008 . We were recommended by our parents who had stayed there multiple times over the years . This place more than met our needs , sure it's old but our room was fairly modern , clean with everything you may need , there was a small pool and spa which the kids liked , plus we got a huge all you can eat breakfast in the morning ! One of the best features of The Victoria , besides its very friendly and helpful staff , is its central location , within walking distance of everything and tram stop not that far away either . All 0f this plus it came a the right price . We would and will definitely stay here again .

We booked this hotel because it truly is in the heart of the downtown area. Everything was within walking distance, and they even had their own car park for a reasonable price. The hotel wasn't very fancy, and the rooms were average. We were, however, happy that we spent a little more for an updated room because it seemed that it was clean and new, and we read several reviews that gave unfavorable info about the standard rooms. Overall, it was fine, and allowed to see Melbourne and enjoy our stay.

We got a great rate at the Victoria from Wotif.com - $5 less a night than a double room in a hostel in St Kilda! The staff were very friendly & arranged with the parking garage for us to leave our car there for free while we checked in as there was no parking available on the street at the time. They also allowed us to check in early as the room was empty.
The decor in the corridors was a bit tired - if I were managing the place I'd remove the Victorian style seats by the lifts as they were stained & it doesn't leave a great impression - but our room was fine. It had been recently painted and was spotlessly clean. Having a bar fridge in the room was very handy and the TV was huge. We were asked on check in if we wanted fresh milk for the room, which makes a nice change from those annoying little long-life milk tubs you get in other hotels!
It would be nice if you could open the windows. It wasn't a huge problem as the airconditioning worked well but I do prefer to get some fresh air into the room.
The signage to find the room isn't overly clear, perhaps this could be improved, especially considering it's quite a rabbit warren and some of the room numbering is a bit confusing (e.g. you've got room 1101 and room 101 on the same floor).
But these are minor points considering you get a nice clean room with an in room safe, bar fridge and large TV in central Melbourne for a bargain rate.
It never does cease to amaze me how some people expect a 5 star hotel at a 2 star price - I'm still chuckling at the person who complained that he wasn't asked if he wanted the key to his room safe - it's on the same keyring as the key for the door!
OK, so there's no room service but I find that most hotels charge way too much and take a long time to serve you anyway (£15 and 45 minutes wait for a burger at a particular Holiday Inn in London). There are a lot of good bargain eateries nearby on Swanston Street and you're only a couple of blocks away from the free City Circle tram.
The pool and gym are small, but it's not a huge hotel so I wasn't expecting much anyway.
All in all, I'd recommend this place - nice staff who aren't too cloying or pushy, decor a bit old but excellent value for somewhere so close to the centre of Melbourne. And - most importantly - very clean.
