“Great location and average room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

At first was a bit nervous of having to walk through the older section that smelt of its history- old smokey pub. Had read reviews about old rooms. But happy to discover we had a newer room that was fresh and clean. Large shower, safe, little bar fridge and big TV. Gym had 2 treadmills and 2 exercise bikes and 2 multi use gym weights machines, a sauna and very small pool and reasonable sized new spa. Overall good value and location

I decided to stay at this hotel again (last time many years ago) on my anzac trip to melbourne this year. I stayed 2 nights, at a rate of $140 a night which included a hot breakfast.

CHECK-IN: Efficient.
ROOM: Heritage Queen Room on level 4. A bit of a maze to get to it - up in central lifts to level 1, then along a hall way to another building, then into another set of lifts up to level 2-8. Room was large, quite adequate for one-two people (even with suitcases), renovated, flat screen tv, queen size bed, self-regulated aircon/heating, large and renovated bathroom with shower/toilet, plenty of cupboard space, safe and fridge (inside cupboard). The room was a little stuffy when i first arrived, but quickly remedied. One down side was the window - looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while - it was very smudgy and couldn't get a clear view of the outside.

BREAKFAST: Included in the room rate. Located in building across the lane. Normally full hot breakfast is around $16.90. Cereals, toast, coffee/tea/chocolate, good selection of fresh fruit, yoghurt, juices and pastries. Hot food included the usual bacon, scrambled and poached eggs (the poached egg tasted plastic...yuk), baked beans, hash browns, sausages and grilled tomatoes.

LOCATION: This is the highlight! One of the best locations in Melbourne. Located in Little Collins Street, a minute's walk from Swanston street - shops, trams, restaurants etc.

Would I stay here again? Yes, however probably wouldn't bother with the breakfast inclusion next time and maybe if at a slightly lower rate. Need to allow an extra 1/2 hour to travel time to allow arriving from the airport by skybus and then the skybus minibus drop off to the hotel.

Were in Melbourne for a weekend away and chose this hotel based on its location. The hotel room was small but sufficient. However, there was quite a lot of noise at night which made sleeping quite difficult. Not a fan of the locker system.

Not a bad hotel, however my visit was at the same time as construction work being undertaken so hallways directly outside of elevators were quite run down. Only problem with my room was that my air conditioning didn't work properly, however due to the temperature in melbourne in April, this wasn't a major concern.

Awesome en-suite and bathroom, good bed and overall room quality. Bit expensive for what I recieved however.

Listen - do you want to know a secret? In a Central Business District of decent hotels at unreasonable prices, you may not know that it's possible to be in the middle of everywhere and still plenty left to enjoy the greatest city in Australia. You do now, and I may have just broken the travel fellowship omerta by revealing what should be your top hotel choice in Melbourne, but it is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.

A short traipse from Swanston Street, the city's main drag, across the street from a great coffee shop (Quist's) and a whistle away from all the CBD's sights, the Victoria Hotel charges no more than A$80 a night (on the norm) for a great bed (= phenomenal sleep), super-spacious bathroom with fab amenities and a humble but passable gym room (note that the "pool" is a Jacuzzi). Opened in the late 1800s, the former grande dame is now an Ibis property, and although the rooms were recently renovated (and very well, indeed), depending on how you feel about nostalgia, some of the carpet and paint may either be wearing thin and chintzy or holds its retrospective head up high. Either way, all that is restricted to the mezzanine level, where lobby bar Vic's is the kind of place where the color of your cocktail complements the neon signs, not at all a reflection of the warmth and hospitality you can hang your coat on.

It's not fancy - you have to stow your luggage in a pay locker, the vending machine is motel quality, and one of the three elevators always seems to be inoperable. Check-in and -out is a whambamthankyouma'am affair. But you'll never even notice or remember any of that (unless you're writing a TripAdvisor review) when you're enjoying the supreme comfort and convenience for that value. Stay here, then live it up for the time you're in Melbourne.

This hotel is a great place to stay, very good value and the heritage rooms are also very comfortable. It is situated right in the middle of the city. It is the second time I have stayed here and would definately stay again.

My partner and I stayed at the Victoria Hotel over Anzac Day and were highly disappointed! We arrived at the hotel around midnight after a long flight to be greeted by a rude gentleman who refused to look at us and talked into his computer. We were asked for a credit card which neither of us had (both being University students) and then asked for a $200 cash deposit. With no warning of this we handed over the money we had saved for the two days, having to then each cheap takeaway for our anniversary. We were then given the key to our room and a long list of directions of how to get there because of renovations. After 2 different elevator rides and a long walk through winding hallways we arrived to our tiny room overlooking a brick wall and stained carpet. Having splurged on this holiday for my partner, you can see I was very upset by what was happening. After two days of having to continuously walk through terrible hallways and catch elevators we were happy to leave. When checking out we were then told we had to wait while someone checked our room to receive our deposit back with a flight looming. It took a further 15 minutes until someone returned fr the room leaving us late to check in for our flight. I am very upset with the treatment and standard of the Victoria Hotel and will not return nor recommend it for friends and family!
