“Lovely, but not quite 5 star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

We loved the old style hotel, heritage staircase, big hallways etc. Being greeted by concierge in a top hat, and another taking our bags up to our room while we checked in - definitely great service. All the staff were consistently friendly and helpful.
The room - it was fine for a girl's weekend in Melbourne, and was a reasonable size with high ceilings. The strangest thing was the opaque windows, so we couldn't tell if it was raining (this WAS Melbourne). However we soon found that the best way to gauge the rain was to listen to the drainpipe that seemed to empty onto a metal surface right outside our bathroom (opaque) window. Does it sound like someone is having a shower in the bathroom? yes = it's pouring. Does it sound like someone is having a shower in the next room? yes = it's lightly raining. The first night was a terrible storm, and my roomies had trouble sleeping due to the waterfall outside our window. Luckily I always wear ear plugs in hotels, so I was fine.
The decor and facilities seemed a little tired... I think they could really update this hotel in period style to be something quite impressive (but with mod-cons).
Great location.
We got a great deal online - if we'd paid true 5-star prices, it would not have been value for money.

Room Tip: Check if the glass is opaque!

Dear Madam,

Glad to hear that the service appealed.

There are a number of traditional and a few superior rooms with opaque glass. My advice to readers and to your god self when returning should you wish to avoid these rooms in future is to book a Spring Street facing Room on line or simply to ask us at time of booking.

This is our 130th year and major rejuvenation is planned to commence at the end of next year. Our focus in the meantime is to update as much as we can within the current infrastructure in order to help our guests enjoy the experience that is unique to The Windsor.

Until the next time, our thanks and kindest regards,

Yours faithfully,

David

I was a bit worried when I walked in the lobby as the circa 1880's hotel looked a bit tired. But, the rooms we and our friends stayed in were updated, clean and very comfortable. It also turned out that the staff were particularly helpful and friendly. Our stay was only for a few days while we visited the city, but I would highly recommend the Hotel Windsor for others. Location between Bourke and Collins Streets proved to be very convenient. The hotel dining was quite good and the pub gave a local flavor that was totally different. The one recommendation I would make to this hotel and all the other Australian hotels is to include free internet with the room price.

Dear Molly60878,

Thank you so much for your wonderful review and your patronage of our hotel. Please rest assured that we will be sharing your kind words with our teams.

Unfortunately WiFi in Australia is priced quite high however I am proud to say that we offer the most competitive pricing for WiFi with unlimited downloads.

We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future and but until then we do, as always remain at your service.

Warm Regards
Nick

We stayed at the hotel for two night over a weekend as we had tickets for a musical at the Princess Theatre, which is basically right next door. On arrival we used the valet parking service and upon checking we were upgraded, lucky us! Our room was spacious and comfortable, clean and antique. We each chose different pillows from their pillow menu. Our room came with a view and windows that were able to be opened so we could capture the hassle and bussle of the city which we love!

The service was outstanding and nothing was too much trouble it is a 5 star hotel. It's located right in the heart of the city close to the shops restaurants, opposite Victoria's stately Parliament House and Treasury Gardens.

We also booked the Windsor afternoon tea, what an experience with freshly baked scones with jam and cream, sandwiches, delicate pastries and champagne on arrival and not to mention a gentleman playing the grand piano to set the mood!

We would highly recommended staying a night or many at this hotel!

We stayed 2 nights taking advantage of a discount offer online. We stayed in a clean small traditional or classic room with a queen bed and no view apart from a brick wall opposite.A requested pillow change in person at reception, due to the room phones not working, ensured a better sleep the second night.

The building is obviously aged with varying floor levels evident in the hallways.
The staff were very attentive and pleasant.
Breakfast in the dining room had an old world charm and the included breakfast was for continental only with the option to add and pay for extras such as cooked courses. The continental breakfast was of a very good standard.
The hotel location was very good to access restaurants, arts centers and the CBD.

We could not compare this unique old world hotel to other five star properties at which we have stayed due to the hugely differing facilities associated with the age of the building.
We did get what we considered fair value for our discounted rate.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your review.

As you rightly imply the hotel does have a plentiful choice of room and suite types. All have a pillow menu yet on your second day our phones went down for almost an hour which was an exceptionally rare occurrence and one which is bound to inconvenience guests and for which we are most sorry.

We appreciate your considered and kind opinions overall and can only look forward to welcoming you both back in the not too distant future where you choice of pillows from this stay will be waiting for you in your chosen room or suite.

With kindest regards,

Yours faithfully,

David

We are not quite up to our Golden Wedding - but very close! Having been fortunate enough to obtain an excellent 'deal', we decided to use it for the anniversary celebration in early June.
We were so very pleasantly surprised with everything and I have already completed the feedback and submitted it.
When I told my husband I had assessed the arrival and departure formalities as 'Very Good', he disagreed. He had looked after all of this and said I should have ticked the 'excellent' box! I tried to retrieve my original assessment, but too late - it had gone forever.
So, in a revised response, everything was outstanding. What was also worthy of comment is that my husband has mobility issues and also neither of us is now able to drive. The proximity to trams linking to Southern Cross station and our Victoria Parade specialist was a much-appreciated added bonus!
We hope to return for a further enjoyable stay.

From the moment the front doors opened, I knew our stay was going to be exactly what was needed. The staff are welcoming, friendly, professional and courteous. We checked in with ease, and all inquiries about local necessities were answered with simple, easy to follow directions.
The room and all facilities were of the highest standard, and the old-world charm was pure delight (especially the artwork on display throughout the hotel). I can't fault the Windsor, and I'll definitely stay again!

Stayed at the hotel Fri 31 May/Saturday 1 June 2013. Our time at the hotel exceeded all expectations! Ive never had that experience before. Hotel was built in 1883 I think and feels very special. Staff were so friendly and helpful. The hotel feels Grand, but not ostentatious or stand-offish. The rooms are comfortable and clean with old world extras, like umbrellas and large wooden lint brushes standard. We loved the breakfast. Not rushed, the choice was beautiful, loved the plums done in a vanilla bean sauce....and the corn fritters are the best. The high tea was lovely, beautiful choice of teas, and everything served on bone china and silver, very special. Would strongly recommend Hotel Windsor to anybody wishing to stay in Melbourne. Cant wait till I can come back again!
