“Service top notch, but rooms need an uplift.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2011

One of the hardest things when reading reviews is trying to decide where the people are coming from and what their expectations were for the hotel. So I'll try to make it easy for you. My wife and are in our late twenties, love to travel and typically stay in 2-3 star type hotels.

When visiting Melbourne we decided to treat ourselves and stay in a fancier hotel. We came across the Windsor and were drawn in by the architecture and history of the building. On arrival from the Skybus shuttle we were greeted by the doorman and had our bags taken from us for delivery to our room. Check-in was a breeze and the staff extremely helpful. Up the beautiful staircase we went to our 3rd floor standard room. The room itself was pretty small, the chair pretty worn, but the bed and bathroom were nice. I think we were in the addition wing rather than the original part of the hotel. We took advantage of the pillow menu and ordered new pillows, which thought was kind of fun.

In summary, the room was really nothing to write home about, but the building was beautiful and the staff excellent.

This lovely old place has much in common with London's Ritz or Savoy - even though it predates both of them. When you stay here you know you're not in a formulaic chain hotel - it's quirky, welcoming and efficient. Our suite on Spring Street was large and elegant with wonderful views of Parliament House. The lifts have a stately feel although you wouldn't want them in a 50-storey building, particularly if you were in a hurry. If you have time, try using the staircase - it's heritage listed and transports you back to the days of Marvellous Melbourne when Victoria was still a colony. Check in was friendly and efficient and from then on everyone seemed to remember our names. Location is terrific - close to a train station, Chinatown, most of the city's theatres, bars and restaurants and handy for shopping in Bourke and Collins Streets. If you're looking for the best value for your dollar try a little gently arm-twisting - ask for added value.

I had previously stayed at the Hotel and loved it, but this time the stay was met with some dissapointment. The staff were great, being both professional and friendly and the restaurant for dinner was very nice. The rooms are however very old. Peeling wallpaper and noise from other rooms. Also a long wait for hot water - really the rooms are not five star.

Dear Citystayer_10,

Thanks for posting your review. I was happy to read you received friendly and professional service as well as enjoying dinner in the restaurant; however I'm disappointed that your room didn’t meet your expectations on this occasion.

I was scruffy after a long road trip, but this didn't appear to affect the way we were treated.
The concierge is professional and friendly, they booked the shuttle for the airport bus, supplied our Melbourne public transport day pass.

The lovely staircase well worth the climb. If I was staying longer I would have used the small gym at the top.
The room was comfortable and refurbished but still retaining the ambience from a bygone era.
But some things i noticed were not right, like the chandelier didn't hang straight, and the shower screen wast screwed into the tile wall properly, I looked through the window onto peeling paintwork on the outside of the building.
The old hotel obviously costs a lot to maintain, but I was happy to pay about $170 per night for the experience.

Overall was disappointed with our stay. From the beginning things seemed to be amiss. I've never checked into a hotel before without being told where the restaurant and lifts were. Hotel does have a lovely nostalgic feel, like a blast from the 20's to see the maids in their uniforms and the room was luxurious even with the peeling wallpaper and lack of more than 2 minutes of hot water in the shower. Where things really took a nose dive was at breakfast. Our waiter was perhaps the rudest person I've come across, pointed at our table and that was it. No offer of tea or coffee, never checked if we wanted a cooked breakfast, nothing. Eventually with my temper flaring I had to ask for tea and left with a bitter taste in my mouth. Asked at reception for a phone charger and was told 'go ask Phil', I enquired who might Phil be and was looked up and down as if I had stood in something. "Obviously" Phil was the concierge!! Breakfast was better the second morning thanks to a very eager and helpful waitress. Stayed here thanks to a friends gift but could not, under any circumstances recommend this to anyone at their prices. Definitely much better value and service available. Wish I hadn't stayed here, I often passed it and thought how fantastic it would be to stay but sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Room Tip: go elsewhere

Considering the price, it was disappointing to find a tiny room, with view to a brick wall and about 7 channels on the TV. We've stayed at much better and well equipped 5 star hotels around the area (the city is full of them), so I will definitely find something else near by rather than be taken by the exterior of the building next time.

I've stayed at the Windsor quite a few times over the past few years and each time it does not disappoint. The staff are wonderful and attentive and bend over backwards to please you.
Check in and check out is quick and easy. The hotel itself has a historical and romantic feel to it. If you're looking for a trendy boutique hotel than this is not the place for you...but if you're looking for something special which is not seen very often these days then look no further!

The beds are big and comfy. There's a complimentary pillow menu which you can access if you're particular about the type of pillow you like to sleep on. The rooms are clean, and spacious but best of all you can open the windows to let some fresh air in unlike most inner city hotels. My only complaint would perhaps be that the carpet in some of the cheaper rooms looks a little worn. But seeing as you don't sleep on the floor it's not really an issue.

Breakfast is amazing. A very good variety, the hotel restaurant is also open for dinner. It's a little pricey but worth every penny. If you're on a budget the room service isn't too badly priced at $15-30 per meal and it's still prepared in the same kitchen with the same care and attention. I highly recommend the steak. Served on a bed of creamy mashed potato with brocollini.

The high tea in the grand ballroom is great if you have a spare $60 couple of hours in the afternoon. It sounds like a lot but you'll be so full after you'll skip dinner and just lay on big cushy bed upstairs watching the huge plasma TV or admiring your beautiful surrounds.

Location wise it's very central with the free city tram stopping right outside the front door. Parliament sits opposite the windsor as does a lovely big park. Theatres and restaurants are all within walking distance as are many small shops and art galleries.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing Spring St. The cheaper rooms are lovely but if you can afford a little more th...
