“a little dark...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

I stayed here since the reception for a wedding of a friend was to be held in the restaurant. Which by the way was an awesome very modern stand up reception with lovely food. The room including the bathroom was quite spacious. I found a couple of things frustrating - firstly the water leaked from out of under the shower and all over the floor, saturating the bath mats. Secondly, and I have to confess I only noticed this because I was putting on make up for the wedding - but my room had only romantic downlights, and wasn't exactly conducive to being able to see what you were doing. It was also only a little noisy in the morning. There was a safe, and slippers, which is always nice. The mini-bar was extensively stocked, if you're into that sort of thing, but be warned - hideously expensive. The hotel is well positioned for any travel into the city, or if you're like me and need access to the botanical gardens. The service is quite good, with attentive staff. I was lucky I got a fairly cheap room for what it would normally be, but it was still the above standard room.

Room Tip: Ask for something light and bright!

The staff attitudes on the other hand could be vastly improved. If you come for the location & rooms and don't care about rude staff then it's ok. The bed was great. Huge shower. Aircon/heating VERY ANNOYING and difficult to control. TV is basically freeview with a few foxtel stations - not exactly 5 star. Breakfast was nice although they only had flora margarine and no real butter - when I stuck my nose up at that one of the overworked waiting staff brought me some butter from the kitchen.

Summary

What a splendid hotel. Admittedly we were upgraded to a Suite which got us off on the right foot, but regardless of that the Royce is absolutely beautiful. The room itself (Suite 100) was magnificent and the service we experienced was nothing short of First Class. I'm astonished that The Royce only rates in the 50s as our experience was well into the 90s. Thanks Royce for a superb experience

The Staff

The staff were consummate professionals from start to finish

The Hotel

The hotel itself is small, almost quaint, very much boutique

The Location

You couldn't get a more ideal location, ie far enough from town that it's quiet, but right on the tram route so you're only a 5min tram ride into town.

The Food

We were planning on having dinner at Dish but sadly it was closed over Easter. However, can recommend the Amber Room which serves up some awesome bar food. Overall a very pleasant experience.

*Very small rooms (Premier suites & deluxe rooms)
*Lifts were broken
*Inadequate Heating & Cooling
*Fire escapes were locked
*Poorly maintained rooms (broken items lights not working no hair dryer)
*incompetent Staff
*Advertised 4 foxtel channels there were none, $16.95 to watch a movie once! Have to pay again to rewatch
*Gym was locked out

Our whole family stayed at this hotel for a wedding with reception to be held at the Dish Restaurant,
We booked 2months ahead 5 rooms at once and would not even give a slight discount also our rooms were not even on the same floor!,
Lifts were broken on and off all night so had to walk up and down from the fourth floor got stuck in the Fire exit as the doors automatically locked behind you only way out was through the kitchen onto the street then back into main entry, rooms were stuffy and hot or icy cold climate control not working the premier suite was very small!
Charge c/c twice and still sent an outstanding bill even though paid in-full, still waiting for funds to be returned.
I could keep going on and on how dissatisfied we are with our stay....
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone ever!!!!!!

Room Tip: If you do book make sure on your booking they list all thats included as the wil try to charge extr...

The Royce bedroom has a wonderfully comfortable bed and generally the staff are fairly helpful - for example I was able to get early check in when I arrived (I had emailed ahead) and only had to ask twice to get them to double check that a room was free.
They give you one hour of internet access for free each day (but you have to get a password from reception) and then charge like wounded bulls for 24hrs of access.
The shower doors arent waterproof so you have to arrange a lot of towels on the bathroom floor if you want to avoid water flooding into the bedroom (I did this on the first day) but then managed to set up a complex weir system to hold back the floods.
The breakfast danishes are delicious - but the breakfast that is included in the room rate doesnt have a great selection - although it looked better on saturday. You have to pay extra for cappuccino which many other hotels have without an extra cost. Even though breakfast is OK dont go to the restaurant for dinner. I had the toughest steak of my life (but I ate it cos I didnt want to make a fuss), the salad was overdrenched with dressing and the 4 handcut chips were uncooked and crunchy. At least when I mentioned my concerns after I went to pay they were friendly and offered my friend and I a glass of wine each which was nice.
The conference organisers were efficient and made sure we had everything we needed.

I have stayed here multiple times in 2011 and 2012 on business. This is a really good solid hotel. Great service in the reception, bar and restaurant. I look forward to eating at the restaurant Dish. The staff are friendly and often remember me. The menu changes often and has a great affordable range of modern Austrailian fare.

The rooms vary. Level one rooms are 2story, and often the bedroom is a bit too hot. They are probably the worst rooms. Rooms at the front can get some noise from the trams and road. The standard rooms are modern with walk in large showers nice large flat screen tv and comfortable beds. The suites are very good with spa baths and a tv you can watch while lying in them!

All up I enjoy coming to Melbourne for work a lot more due to my stay here.

For tourists it's actually not too far from the city by tram. So easy location for visiting city and st Kildare beach.

Room Tip: Choose a room on upper levels and for super quiet at the back. Avoid level one.
