“Sorry to see this apartments going to rack and ruin”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

These apartments are in such a wonderful spot - such easy access to the City and the Fitzory Street Gardens it is a huge shame they are being left to go to rack and ruin. We have stayed here a number of times over the past 8 years or so and slowly the condition is just getting worse and worse. This last visit makes me wonder if we will return. (1) The bathroom was a disgrace. There was hair from the pervious visitors all over the floor and painting the bathtub with paint???? What the???? It was peeling off around our feet. There wasn't hot water and the taps in the shower were extremely hard to use and we were worried that they would actually come away from the wall. (2) There wasn't a cover on the doona!! I was wondering how hygienic this is?? I was pretty disgusted with this. (3) In the kitchen there were issues with the faucet. We were so scared of touching it let alone moving it at all as we thought it would break off and we didn't want to get charged for this. (4) The overall smell of the place, but particularly the stairwell was disgusting. I thought someone must have used it as a toilet.

As I stated in the beginning of my review we find it a real shame that the condition of these apartments is just getting worse and worse with each visit, especially as we have made similar comments before. All that said we MIGHT try to stay here one more time before looking elsewhere.

Room Tip: Try an apartment in another one of their locations. We stayed at Gipps Street. Maybe one of the othe...

Very rude staff, extremely inpatient. The staff showed us the wrong way to room and closed the reception right after checking-in, we were looking for room for nearly an hour. In general, very bad customer service.

Thanks for the easy check-in and out, great parking (although not one parking space for each room but if you miss out on a park there is usually street parking close by). The apartment was clean and comfortable and is in a quiet location. Love having a full kitchen and a bigger bathroom in the unit we stayed in.
If you are looking for 5* then go elsewhere, this is value for $ in Melb CBD. We have stayed at all but the North Melb Apt. Tribeca is great if you want something a little trendier, we stayed here for a girls weekend. Albert St is comfortable but needs a little renovating. Treasury apartments we have found noisy but City Edge cannot help inconsiderate guests. The room closest to reception is not a good one to stay in as people are always coming and going and the guest laundry is right on the other side.
After reading some comments, I think we must have been very lucky or others have higher expectations on value for money.

We spent two nights at this Apartment Hotel with our children. We found the reception staff were helpful and the accommodation was clean and quiet.

They have a central reception for the properties they run in East Melbourne, so once we checked in it was an easy stroll to our apartment.

We liked the location as it was close to the city (about a 10-15 min walk) and it was close to the MCG where we attended a game.

Overall, it was great value for the price and its closeness to the places we wanted to visit. Will use City Edge again.

I stayed here with my husband for the Grand Prix. My in laws also had a room in the same block. We had stayed here 4 years previously and thought it was ok and value for money. Four years on and nothing had changed, except the place had become more run down and was exceptionally dirty. The carpet was awful, I did not want to walk on it barefoot (or even in socks!) and I was suspicious of sitting down in the sofa chairs! The linen had burn marks, maybe cigarette marks, that would have been obvious to anyone initially making up our bed, however they were the sheets that we were stuck with! The linen and towels were not changed throughout our stay, a duration of 5 nights. The kitchen crockery and cutlery were dirty and required cleaning before I was happy to eat with them. We had requested the Albert St apartment and both our room and my in law's room was in this complex. There was free parking behind the building for our hire car. The location is very good, a supermarket and a few restaurants a block away, tram into town very close by, and Victoria St Richmond also close for some great restaurants, general looking around at the Vietnamese grocers and butchers. Location is great, this apartment complex is not. We will not be staying there again, and I would not recommend anyone else to stay there unless this place is seriously renovated.

Room Tip: Rooms facing away from Albert St are much quieter. Confirm with the apartments prior to your stay w...

Dear Ingrid, I would like to acknowledge your feedback. At City Edge we value all feedback, weather it's of positive or other nature as it helps us to monitor the services we provide.

We wish to note that at City Edge auxiliary services like daily service, internet, guest laundry are not included in room price and can be purchased on request. This enables us to offer to our clientele such low prices and our guests love this. This way you do not need to spend your money on expensive extras but pay only for what you use.

We wish to take on board your comments about renovation and on this stage it is in our near future plans. On this stage the older condition of the building is clearly reflected in price. I am certain that you will not be able to book a room at any other hotel in East Melbourne for as low as $89 per night for apartment with ensuite, full kitchen and free parking.

I would not recommend to stay here to my worst enemy. On the website it states that its in the city, the gallery of photos are all with modern furniture and beautiful. On arrival you find its nothing like what it says on the website at all.Far from the truth. The cleanliness of the room was very very poor.Mouldy bathroom, curlery was dirty, floors and even the linen was not clean. No linenchange throughout the stay. When you go to albert street head office you then just get told you have to go to one of the four other apartments 2 blocks down.Makes things a bit difficult when you dont have a car & all your luggage. We are small sized people but if you were of a little bigger size you would not fit through the bathroom shower screen door. Its just ridiculous.Would never stay here again or recommend it anyone.Waiste of money and very dissapointing to arrive on holidays to this.I rate it a 10 out of 10 for deceiving and false advertising.

Dear guest,

I would like to acknowledge you feedback. City Edge values feedback it receives weather of positive or other nature. This helps us to maintain and improve the services we provide as well as improve our business model.

As described on our website we offer quality accommodation for savvy traveller. Our savvy traveller like to pay only for the services they use, and costly extras like daily service, Internet etc can be purchased separately as required to keep your cost down.

All this information can be found on the front page of our website. Also, on the front page of our website you will be able to see that City Edge offers 6 different location in Melbourne. We have hotel in Melbourne CBD and it is called City Edge on Elizabeth. The hotel City Edge Albert - the one you have booked is not located in CBD and is adjustment to Melbourne City and is about 15 to 20 min walk. City Edge on Elizabeth is new and modern complex.

It is responsibility of a guest to place the booking for the correct property as prices, quality and fit outs differ from hotel to hotel . However our great customer service stays the same. Perhaps next time you are in Melbourne you can try our City Edge on Elizabeth or City Edge North Melbourne hotel and the things will go more smoothly next time you are staying with us.

Definitely agree with the sentiment that you get what you pay for, however, there were some simple things missing from the City Edge apartments that shouldn't have been!

Only one toilet roll was provided - very embarrassing going down to the front desk to ask for another one! There were no complimentary shampoos and conditioners (which I thought was standard for most hotels?).

Despite staying at the hotel for 3 nights only one towel was provided per person. Surely it's not too much to ask to have a spare towel! No bathmat was provided and there was no holder for the hand towel.

I loved the set-up for the studio where there was two separate rooms (despite having to walk through one to get the the bathroom). I would have appreciated a bedside lamp in the other room though.

My friend and I stayed in a second floor room. When the heater was on overnight I was rudely awoken by a very loud noise and the roof shaking. This was only felt in the second bedroom outside the toilet. Every time the heater turned back on the noise started again and I had to hold onto the bed for dear life! I'd hate to imagine staying in the room during summer!

We faced Albert Street so it was a little noisy. We found noise from the corrdior way more disruptive though and on a number of occassions wanted to ask other guests to be quiet.

We also found the staff on reception cold and distant. I seemed to be a bit of a nuisance asking for the additional toilet roll! The cleaners were lovely - as we were leaving they wished us a good day - something the reception staff could learn from!

Would be handy if a bottle opener was provided - well a nice touch anyway :)

Location was ok - a 10-15 trek to the nearest tram. Given the tram stop was oppposite the Laurent bakery this was probably a good thing and I didn't feel too bad stopping in for breakfast :) From Melbourne central it cost $15 to get back to the apartment around 11:30pm.

Room Tip: Try to get a room away from the elevator and on the first floor to avoid air conditioner unit noise.
