“Exceptional Service and lots of smile!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2008

I recently had the pleasure of attending a conference at The Como Melbourne. The Events department were the best I have dealt with and nothing was too much trouble.

On arrival at the hotel the porter promptly opened my door and walked me through to reception - this is a rartiy in hotels these days - what a delight! The girl on reception looked immaculate and could not do enough for me.

I was upgraded to a lovely Open Plan Suite that was very roomy and had a fabulous BIG LCD TV.

Although I was here for work I will return for a weekend with my partner.

Well done and thank you for a great stay.

I have stayed at the Como several times over the last 3 years and 3 years ago my review would have been five stars but I think the property is definitely slipping.

The room and bath are getting tired, the staff gets just a little more uninterested and uneducated each time I go, and the rates are creeping up to a point where I just don't think it's worth $300AU.

The South Yarra neighborhood is definitely five stars so the location of the property keeps me from ruling it out completely for my next trip, but I am going to be looking at one of the new serviced apartment style hotels in the future and this may have been my last trip to the Como.

  • Liked — The complimentary public laundry on the 5th floor. Proximity to the fantastic Lb. (pound) coffee shop
  • Disliked — Plan on going outside for your run...the gym is worn down.

My recent stay at the Como was great. Pluses: Staff were lovely and professional, big rooms with a large plasma screen, huge bathroom with big bath, and super comfortable bed. Minuses: Furnishings a bit tired and dirty plates/glasses left in lobby outside rooms for way too long. Its unsightly and for a 5 star hotel you would expect a bit more "polish". Overall, was a pleasant experience, but the Como probably needs to take care of the minor details to be a true 5 star hotel.

Completely agree with previous review saying this hotel is tired. I understand it was refurbished prior to the millenium but I don't think it has seen a lick of paint since.
We booked specifically to have a room with stove to cook for our one-year old but were given a dingey room with cigarette burns in the carpet and finger marks on the walls and only a microwave oven - not what I was expecting for nearly $400 a night!
Staff did move us the next day to a better room but it just made our first night's stay the more depressing.
Unlike the Saville (which has a washing machine in every room) there was only one washing machine for the whole hotel meaning guests were having to fight over it!
The communal areas are completely unwelcoming and cushions etc soiled/stained. The bar should be renamed So-so.
Even basics were poor - every towel I used was frayed at the edges.
This hotel is not good value and the only reason to stay here is if you want to be on Toorak Rd. It is a hotel which has had its day and is in chronic need of investment.

The only reason I Stay here is the Location... if I had a choice it would not be the Como.. in its hey day it was probably a great place.. the rooms are very tired.. grouting is mouldy in the bathrooms - rooms are gloomy and depressing. dated furnishings.. the staff altrhough friendly and helpful do not acknowledge previous stays at the hotel .. even after staying once or twice a year for the last four years .

Stayed at The Como for the TENNIS! Great location, only a stones throw away. Shame I couldn't stay any longer as I only saw round 1. All the staff were really lovely and were willing to help with anything and everything. Thanks Como - can't wait to get back there.
Jessie.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2007

Stayed twice in last 3 mths - my other reviews for Melbourne cover the other hotels I have stayed in over past 3 mths - Docklands Grand Mercure, Sebel on Collins, Sofitel, Grand Hyatt, Park Hyatt, Somerset on Elizabeth, Crown Towers and Quay West. Sebel and Quay West are also Mirvac properties and frankly they all suffer from a bit of cheap skating - they share quite nice and spacious living areas, with the same cheap taste in bathroom fittings (go to Bunnings, Homebase or equivalent in your own country, pick out the 50p/50c special tiles and bathroom cabinets and you have Mirvac bathrooms). In the first stay I opened the wardrobe and the strip of laminate to cover up cheap chipboard was flapping away (about 45cm of it). I asked for the manager just to point out the fact that a 5 star hotel with such poor maintenance feels 2 star. She was pleasant about it, but blamed the cleaning dept. My view is mgmt should be checking for these things - it must have been there for weeks. another negative is phone cost - my wife on the second trip used the room phone to make Australian mobile calls - $5 per minute - for a local call! Some of the directions given to my wife by reception staff were a joke - advising some one that a place is a 5 minute walk to find it is a 10-15 minute drive with the taxi driver referring to the reception staff as complete idiots sums up accuracy of advice.
Positives - surrounding area has a lot of nice restaurants to choose from. Good clothes shopping as well if that is your scene. No neighbouring streets which are scummy at night - unlike the centre of town eg a lot of Swanston and Russell, so more comfortable walking around at night. Room style is reasonable and very spacious rooms. Bed was comfortable. Internet standard rip off Melbourne price of $29 for first hour - then capped at that price.
I would stay there again if I want the area for shopping and restaurants (as the other choices are pretty limited - eg Quest Apartments). Otherwise a moderate recommendation for room comfort. PS if you are expecting some beautiful TV crowd in the bar (channel 10 next door) - think again. Over 8 nights, one night was busy with a corporate event, 1 night I saw 3 people, and the rest - nil.
