“Great location, good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2009

Came to Melbourne to celebrate a 2 yr aniversary and the Mantra was alot better than expected. We had the breakfast included and while it was advertised as cheaper on the front desk like another reviewer commented, we thought it was great value - nice food, lots of choice and nice atmosphere and much more convinient than having to out to a cafe.

Room was a one bedroom spa apartment, while there was no balcony the view was good and you could just as easily go up to the pool area if you wanted to lounge and look at the view. Couch was comfortable, bed was comfortable, and two tables to sit down and use a laptop if neccesary. Only negatives (if you could even call them negatives really, perhaps just minor annoyances?) were the rather noisy air conditioner, and not alot of light in the apartment, it was rather dark most of the time.

We found the staff to have great customer service and would definately stay here again. I would especially recommend it to anyone seeing a show at the arts centre or casino as it is really closeby and would have a nice getaway at the same time.

  • Liked — Location, pool, comfortable and cosy
  • Disliked — Noisy air conditioner, room a bit dark

Stayed for 3 nights at the Mantra Southgate for the Australian Open. The unit was ordinary - looked tired and pretty worn. A couple coats of paint would not have gone a stray! Huge construction going on directly behind and we found it to be quite noisy. We paid $420 per night for a two bedroom apartment - was definitely not worth the price. Also, they do offer breakfast for $14.50 and $9.00 child - not worth it, rather go down to Southbank and get breakfast and meals along the river. Location was good, close to trams and Southgate pubs and restaurants.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2008

We booked through Mantra website for a 2 bedroom deluxe apartment. When we arrived we were told we were booked into a 2 bedroom corner apartment. I had to question this several times and was treated dismissively until I was able to provide my copy of the email confirmation. There were no apologies etc and the reception staff were very rude.
I later went to double check that we had vouchers for our pre-paid breakfast - again no record and treated as though it was our fault. I had to again provide my documentation to confirm this. As far as the room is concernced - it was adequate but we paid $380 dollars a night and for this money, the room was fairly small and you would be better off staying at Docklands or a quest apartment as they are far more spacious.
Upon checkout - we were charged a higher amount than was quoted and confirmed on our confirmation letter but by this stage we were just glad to check out and not argue about another problem.
Final observation - the room was fine - but overpriced when you compare what other apartments are also available and the staff were rude and not helpful at all (when we asked for some information on a popular tourist attraction, the reception staff just pointed to a pamphlet when all we wanted was a time frame to walk from the hotel to the attraction).
Also - we paid $19.00 for the breakfast on the Mantra site but when we arrived at the hotel you could actually purchase it on site for $14.95!!!!!!

This is the re-packaged version of the Pacific International Apartments, Southbank. It has a new name, and the apartments have had a half-face lift (different colour paint on one wall) - no change to furnishings. Everything else is pretty much the same as the old Pacific International we have grown to know and love. Eg. dishwasher had bits missing, clothes drier broken, TV not working properly etc. Thank God it wasn't summer otherwise the aircon would have been the issue. Staff friendly as always and the ever -present maintenance man working overtime as usual. We go there because of the convenient location......and the free daily papers!!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2008

We were at Melbourne in the July 2007, precisely from 16th to 20th. The Southbank apartments are in the new area of Melbourne, 2 minutes by foot to the Art Center and the Museum of Modern Art, and 7 minutes from the old station in the center of the City. It's a very interesting complex of skyscrapers, near the higher skysc of the australia (and the southern emisphere). The city is great, the most european city in AussieLand.
We have a 2 bed aparment, on the 6th floor. The furniture was good, we had a big kitchen with all the electronic stuff, a dining room with a tv, two nice bedroom and a perfect bathroom. An excellent apartment for 4 people!
Our choice was on an apartment for the presence of a washing machine and an airdryer. The airdryer wasn't run. We call the assistence at the reception, and the day after we had the airdryer repaired and all of our clothes dried by the staff. I can say an excellent service.
The bed was bigger than the italian standard, and the dining room was very confortable.
At the last floor there's a pool complex, with a great pool, a sauna and an Jacuzzi; in the evening there's a great view of city lights!!!! And it's like swim in the sky, with the city behind, because the last floor is glassed. There's also a gym, for the athlets!
Near from the apartments there's a shopping complex, with resturant and shops (but not markets), there's only a small 7eleven market.
Overall a great choice!

We stayed for one night at the Pacific International Suites on Southbank. We are a family of two adults and two children. We were very happy with the Pacific International. The rooms are very spacious, especially the living area. The children enjoyed the view of the Exhibition Centre (which is lit up) and ferris wheel at night. The beds were very comfortable although the configuration of a queen bed in each room was not ideal with children. The bathrooms were also huge and the laundry facilities were excellent.

The swimming pool is on the top floor. It's a big pool with a small spa area. You can also get outside on the terrace and admire the views from both sides of the hotel.

The location was a little tricky to find (the street that we were told its on the corner of wasn't on our map and it's a busy road - try to get specific directions) but very handy for the Exhibition Centre or trams. It takes about 5 minutes to walk into the city. Parking is not great. There are two carparks but they both fill up. My husband managed to reverse our car into a wall trying to turn around - there's not a lot of space! Also at least one of the carparks was not secure with the garage door being open to the street.

But other than the parking situation we were very happy with the Pacific International and would definitely stay there again. We all loved Melbourne - it's a great family destination.
