“Glad I choose Stamford Plaza”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

I recently had to travel to Melbourne to be with my daughter, her husband and 4 year old granddaughter who was undergoing major heart surgery in the Royal Children's hospital. As I could only book the accommodation at the last minute, I was very fortunate to be able to book a premier king bedroom suite at the last minute. Check in and check out were friendly and efficient. The suite itself was very comfortable, although the decor was slightly dated. The bathroom was on the small side but I liked the old fashioned shower taps (no fiddling about to find out how the taps worked), although when I booked the room, I was under the impression that L'Occitane bathroom toiletries were included, as well complementary newspapers. This was solved by just one phone call to housekeeping and L'occitane bathroom toiletries were delivered within 5 minutes. I was slightly taken back that no toothbrush and toothpaste or shaving kit was provided, these had an additional cost of approx. $5 and $6 respectively (in all other 5 star hotels we have stayed in these were provided as well as shaving kit). As I was in Melbourne for 7 days, the kitchenette came in very handy, just to have the occasional meal in room. The bed was heaven, never have I slept so well in a hotel as in the Stamford Plaza, the pillows were great. A good "green" option is to get a credit of $10 to be used in Harry's bar/cafe for not having the room serviced.
The location of the hotel could not be better, a 5 minute walk (less if one is a fast walker) to the shopping malls, CBD and all the trams.
Now to the negatives: breakfast was a big disappointment, poorly presented, not a big choice in any particular section, and for what it offered very expensive ($32 with a 20% discount).
The gym is small, only 2 treadmills, 2 bikes and 2 cross trainers and only one cable machine with a very limited amount of weights.
Overall, yes I would stay in the Stamford again, definitely and planning to come back sometime next year under less stressfull circumstances.

Room Tip: High floor

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

We recently spent the night at The Stamford Plaza and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We arrived early at about midday and were able to check in immediately and accepted a promotional upgrade offer ($15) to a King sized 1 bedroom suite.

The friendly and efficient Reception staff member asked whether we had anything special planned and we mentioned we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a credit to her professionalism and a thoughtful touch that a congratulatory card, bottle of sparkles and chocolates were discovered on return to our room – a pleasant surprise.

Location wise the Stamford is centrally located within easy walking distance to many attractions and great restaurants.

The room itself was perfect – recently upgraded with well-considered inclusions such as dimmer and master switches and an auto sensor light in the bathroom. The decoration was tasteful and it made the suite very inviting.

The basic items for a relaxing stay that some other 5 star hotels don’t get right were all well executed: excellent soundproofing (we were adjacent to the lift lobby and didn’t hear any noise); quiet, effective aircon (it seemed slightly cooler in the bedroom area compared with the cosy living area which was good for sleeping) and effective blackout curtains.

The suite was very well equipped with kitchenette (cooking equipment available on request), comfortable furnishings, 2 tv’s and ipod/phone compatible clock/radio, spa bath etc. Presentation and cleanliness - top standard.

There was a Pillow Menu which we didn’t need to try as the pillows supplied were fine. Our only suggestion for improvement would be to incorporate a soft mattress topper to the bed to ease the very firm feel (a bit hard on the shoulders/hips for us). A pity it’s probably too difficult for hotels to arrange a “Mattress Menu” along the lines of their “Pillow Menu!”

Checkout was also handled with a friendly and professional manner.

We look forward to spending time at the Stamford Plaza Melbourne again, it will be our first choice.

It's the small touches and superior service makes a stay here feel like an indulgent treat. With gold and tassle finishings, plush crested-carpets, white lourved partitions and a pillow menu, the hotel throws back to time when people came first. And thankfully, the team at Melbourne make sure you feel this.
The hotel is in an excellent location and within walking distance to all shopping and eating haunts. It's also very reasonalby priced. I'll definitely be back. Thanks!

Room Tip: The in-room service menu is surprisingly cheap - and tasty. If you're a light sleeper, I'd r...

Dear young_love_18092010,
I am thrilled to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay with us and were made to feel so special, it’s definitely important to indulge ourselves once in a while.
On your next stay perhaps you could try our High Tea served every Sunday, where we pay tribute to the elegance of a traditional English afternoon tea but give it an uplifting modern twist… - a truly lovely way to spend an afternoon,
Kind regards

In recent months I have stayed in quite a few different hotels, and this one beats them hands down. For a start the staff are friendly and approachable, there is a pillow menu[ how many hotels don't offer this little extra now] and the room service food is actually good value! The bed was comfortable, and the pillows feather and divine!
We had a 2 bed suite, and it was SO clean,I will return to this hotel as soon as I can.

Room Tip: The two bedroom suites are worth the extra.

It looked pretty good from the photos and the reviews so we booked a "studio queen suite" for 3 nights. We requested an early check-in and higher floors as many reviews warned about the noise at the lower levels. However, We arrived at the hotel and the lady at the reception said there is no room available at higher floors so you need to wait. We asked about a free upgrade if possible but she said there is a charge of 30 dollars per night that due to their promotion is now $15 per night... What a great value! A supposedly five star hotel should generally not care about 15$ and be OK to upgrade when there is a number of other rooms available.

Anyway, after waiting hours, a room got emptied and cleaned so we finally checked in. It was great to see that the room does not have a Kitchen! When we paid for the hotel it was a great spacious room and the description said "Features a dining area and fully-equipped kitchen".
We went down and asked for a room with kitchen. A different staff told us that the room does not have a kitchen and that she can upgrade our room to a one bedroom apartment and started to talk about their amazing 15$ promotion. I showed her the print of our confirmation and asked her to change our room to another one with kitchen or at least organize a portable stove or something so we can cook the food that we bought. She said that the hotel is fully booked out! and she might be able to do something tomorrow. Well, I think honesty is very important(Less than an hour before, another staff member told us that there is plenty of rooms available should we require to upgrade our room for the 15$ per night additional fee!). To make the story short, the manager (Michael) unapologetically organized a room change for us (Even though the hotel was fully booked-- they might have kicked someone out I suppose) and noted that there was a mistake in "www.booking.com.au" website and that they will correct the room description for future guests (Hotels.com.au happened to do the same mistake coincidentally!). Yet, the room description IS STILL UNCHANGED in both websites!

So thats how we spent the first day of our holiday in Melbourne... moving rooms and arguments ...

Once moved in, the room faced another building so no privacy/view. The hotel is in the middle of 4 taller building which means the curtains must be shut the whole time and no sunlight at all. The one bedroom apartment was in good size and clean, though quite old. The location was OK. The hotel is more like a 4 star than 5!

We stayed at Citigate Hotel a month ago and paid almost half price of what we paid here for that and to conclude Citigate exceeded our expectation far more that Stamford Plaza. We got an early check in, free-upgrade, better location, more honest staff and a lot better value and Citigate only claims to be 4-star!

Room Tip: *Only go if you found a great deal... *Consider other 4-star hotels around CBD. They offer better v...

Dear Ehsan F,
Firstly I apologise for the oversight which has caused such a delayed response to your post and secondly I am disappointed to hear of the series of events which impacted negatively on your stay.

Unlike our other room categories which offer a full kitchen, our studio queen rooms feature a kitchenette area offering a microwave, sink and bench space but not a stove top. I apologise for this miscommunication and your comments regarding the room descriptions provided on booking websites will be taken on board for further review. Our central city location means that we are surrounded by other buildings, however that is a concession made for the convenience of being so close to many of Melbourne's best attractions. The hotel enjoys the support of many regular travelers and at times over high occupancy, early check-ins and upgrades are challenging to facilitate.

The hotel has many positive attributes and I am disappointed that they did not shine through during your stay. I do hope you will return to Stamford Plaza Melbourne so we can prove that your experience is not the standard you should expect. If we have the opportunity to welcome you back I would love to personally oversee your booking . Please feel free to contact me on 03 9659 1000.

Excellent stay ! 7 of us went for a girl's week-end and had 2 apartments in the west wing..beautiful, spacious rooms with everything you could want including a dishwasher !!. The rooms were clean, linen was lovely/crisp/good quality, beds/pillows very comfortable and each of the bedrooms in the 2-bedroom apartment had its own ensuite. Location was perfect - very central to everything but quiet enough not to be disturbed by traffic etc at night. Great bar in the foyer of the west wing for late night drinks..will definitely be back !

Stayed for a weekend in a 1 bedroom apartment. Really quite good. Got a cheap deal through Wotif's mystery hotel booking.
Surprisingly quiet for the city, good facilities, 2 tvs and nice bathroom and kitchette. Fantastic location - only 15 mins walk to the MCG and right in the middle of the city.
Only drawbacks were the louvred doors between the bedroom and lounge area and that the bathroom was off the bedroom not the lounge.
Paid for valet parking which was really good service at $40 per day and the staff were very helpful and courteous.
