“Treat yourself to the suites”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2010

We actually decided to stay at the Sofitel when we got a Wotif mystery purchase, it turned out to be the Sofitel standard room, the price $200 normal price only just over that, I had a look on their website and was not impressed, rang booking as said so and they basically said "you cannot get out of it", so with that as much as it annoyed me I increased to a suite which from memory was around the $500 mark. We had the conceirge service and parking included. The concerige lounge was fabulous, view gorgeous, canapes nice, a few were stale (just to be picky) however very nice all the same. The room is very so slightly dated (once again being picky), but even though we were still happy with it. I started out being so annoyed with the Wotif mystery package it was really no "bargain" at all, and absolutely no way you can get out of it. Spending a further $300 I was extremely annoyed at the start, however in the end was very happy with the stay. We will be going back but only staying in suites, standard rooms are simply too small.

As the advantageplus member, the club rate is great. You can access the club for breakfast, lunch and pre dinner canape. The best thing is the club, breathtaking view, uptodate facilities like free wifi. Private meeting room. The food and beverage are the plus sides. Friendly staff. The all in one remote control in the room is really good. Good location on collin street. Highly Recommeded.

Although my recent stay with the Sofitel on Collins was all but too short, its the first impressions that have prompted me to actually bother writing a review. First, checking in, which is relatively easy once you have found the entrance to the elevated/mezzanine style lobby, was a breeze. Courteous, willing and dutiful, the staff really are the epitome of humility and professionalism. The gentleman at the front desk politely informed me that my room was on level 49 (one floor below the top floor) and was a club sofitel luxury room with access to the club sofitel. Impressed already. Really, why is it nigh on impossible for 4-star hotels, let alone the hotels which brandish the 5-star rating (some arguably self rated - though quite possibly left for another post) to master the simple art of check-in?!?! Well, upon leaving the lift after rocketing to the 49th floor, (my ears popping on the way up mind you) i very easily found my room, and walked straight into what would arguably be the best view of the Melbourne CBD. To cut the review short, as i did not eat breakfast (late sleeper...) and only utilised the bar facilities (which were above par by any means) quickly to the negatives. The rooms. They're dated, and its showing. They have had better days. The carpets are looking like they belong in an RSL. The bathrooms, although quite sizable, are also dating - with particular note given to the shower which is over the bath. After the rain showers of the close-by InterContinental Melbourne, i think ive been ruined, none the less - the bathrooms also feature L'Occitane products; which by and far are crap. Yes i know the Sofitel is a French brand, though surely the choice of toiletries could have been better researched/placed. The television/stereo/electronics. The tv, NEC, bad ugly hulking piece of black plastic which looks cumbersome and conflicts with the decor of the already tired room. The touchscreen device next to the bed, although the Sofitel would like you to think this device which controls all tv, stereo, lighting functions of the room is actually time saving, honestly, i was ready to throw the damn thing out the window. Not intuitive in function. The room service. Great quality food, timely delivery; however, pick-up of the trays delivered was insanely slow. i slept with a tray in my room over night. Sure, i could have left it outside. But given i was out of the hotel for the majority of my stay, there were many an opportunity for a member of staff to retrieve the items. Or perhaps a simple knock on the door would have done. Silly trivial things to kick up about, none the less important things which shape the level of comfort and impinge on the quality of the time spent at any hotel. To finish on a better note, of which has ensured my return, check-out was seemless. Flawless in fact. I chose to use the offered express check out at the club sofitel on the 32nd floor instead of the check-out facilities in the lobby. Drop the slip off at the club, and walk out. Terrific. Only its not brand specific to Sofitel and the InterContinental do it better; and by better, i mean EVERYTHING.

Loved my stay at the Sofitel easy to get to but because it was ANZAC weekend a lot of road closures. Great location near Fed Square only 10 - 15min walk. Staff on check-in were great, but on check-out a little rude - not sure if it was me but he seemed to not talk but had to wait for them to check the room cause I put a cash bond down - but he seemed to talk to the older guests at the hotel. I think if your young like myself between 18 - 24 maybe not so much a lot of older guest who are a bit prescious and staff would rather cater to their needs. No iPod docking station which I think is essential these days. Would go again but not for more that 2 nights - fantastic views of the Yara, MCG & parlliment house from my room. Wish they would do x2 double beds or x2 queens not x2 singles. But overall great time.

This hotel would have gotten a 5 for me except for check-in. The person who served me did not smile...once. I was staying in a Club Luxury Room so expected the service to match. He seemed to have gotten off the wrong side of bed, was not personable and very robotic. Not a good start considering the other reviews. He did ask if I had used Club floor which I said yes and quickly departed check-in. The one good thing was that I could check-in in early. I went to my room and it was nice but not nicer than Grand Hyatt. The room was spacious enough and the bathroom had a shower over bath. The lighting, tv, air con, and entertainment was controlled using a touch screen panel. Very innovative but annoying if trying to change tv channels as you had to stare at the panel rather than point a remote at the tv. I tried the Club floor (which is located on the same floor as Atrium Bar and meeting rooms so did not really seem like a 'Club floor' in itself. The host was pleasant and I had a nice selection of treats for afternoon tea. It was self service and so was the tea/coffee/refreshments. The cold beverages were well stocked. I had also tried breakfast (small selection of hot food on a menu which was a a la carte) and there was a selection of hot and cold food in the buffet. There was a waitress attending the tables so you could order a la carte hot food and beverages. For a Club breakfast it was very nice. The evening canapes were delicious and everything was self service. Good selection of hot and cold canapes. Room service was delicious and prompt. All staff were good except for the one check-in person.

Location wise it was bit further away than other comparable hotels.

We pulled up on a Saturday afternoon in a ten year old car and dressed as you do on a warm Sat and were treated like royalty. Everyone we dealt with was courteous in the extreme. The room was better than we were expecting and the views are worth dying for. Breakfast was a delight and again the service was brilliant. We headed off Sunday morning very satisfied with every aspect of our over night stay. This is not a cheap hotel but I believe you get your money's worth.

It was great to be back. My husband and I have been several times before but this time we also introduced our friends to Melbourne and the Sofitel. We booked two corner suites and they were lovely. Our overall impression remains great. Check in was easy. Rooms met our expectations, great views, tv set up was fine, bathroom lovely. Plenty of space in the room. It was our friends wedding anniversary and the complimentary bottle of bubbly was much appreciated! No problems on check out either or to store or luggage for the day. We were unable to book club level rooms as they were sold out but would like to try next time. We would not hesitate to come again or recommend this hotel. It is in the best position for exploring Melbourne too.
