“Very, very tired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013 via mobile

Being conveniently located for quick access to the Royal Children's Hospital is about the only redeeming feature of this property. Tired rooms, rock hard bed, less-than-pristine public areas. Guaranteed best room rate was still on the side of exxy for a no-special-events weekend in Melbourne.

this is probably the oldest of rydges in Melbourne. it has had some minor renovations.
Its clean but basic. it has a small nice restaurant and easy parking. free access to a local gym but its a bit of a walk.
its not as expensive as city hotels snd has tram sto playing s close by.
Ideal for anyone visiting the royal childrens hodpital - 5 minute walk. If hotels at airport are booked then this is a good alternative

My Wife and I have a daughter which requires constant medical attention and operations. We stayed at the rydges as we have done so many times before and enjoyed our stay, this trip has changed our attitude completely. 7 nights accommodation $1571 plus $84 parking....We are gold pass members as we have stayed there so often and have spent over $8000 in accom and meals in the last 12 months. We were told that we had to pay this price as the Grand Prix was on and good luck finding accom any where else but if we wanted to cancel it they would be able to fill it instantly????? The new manager was less than helpful and I found that since our last stay the place as a whole has gone extremely downhill. I did not enjoy the cold bacon sausages and runny scrambled eggs at all... They do advertise a HOT buffet breakfast which is false advertising as far as I am concerned. I would not reccomend Rydges North Melbourne to anyone....Instead I would reccomend Chapman st appartments as we have just walked through there and found they are much more modern and clean and a lot cheaper. I know we will not be staying at The Rydges again...

I am a priority member and stay often at Rydges hotels. This was by far my most disappointing stay. The room was very neglected. The spa didn't work. The lift was claustrophobic but the stairs with the open windows (which our toddler tried to squeeze out of) posed such a danger that we had no choice but to squeeze into the lift. I question whether it is legal to have an open window like that over a high drop to a pool? Usually we take advantage of the late checkout as members but we couldn't wait to leave this hotel. There weren't enough pillows and the ones I retrieved had mould on the slips. The coffee and tea supplies were dismal, no biscuits and a call to the front desk did nothing to improve the situation although they did apologise for the lack of biscuits (apparently management is currently making a decision about providing them in the future)! It was really the least of our concerns but apparently the only one they had an answer for! The whole place strikes you as an old hotel re-branded Rydges with a coat of cheap lipstick applied to tart it up. You can see right through it. The good points are that the price at least recognises it's failings and its not a bad location although you can't walk to anything much.

Typical hotel with everything you would expect in this price point.Shopped around and for 3 people, in the midst od summer, this was a good deal. Location was close to University of Melbourne, which is what we wanted. Parking was good. They offered a discounted breakfast if you pre-booked it. The rooms were clean, quiet, beds comfortable. Staff was helpful. Stayed on 3rd floor.
View out of the window was of someone's unkept back yard, but since we were gone all day we didn't care.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quiet- don't hear street noise. If you're going to eat breakfast there, pr...

Great location for visiting Melbourne, on Flemington Road and just by a frequent tram service by the Victoria markets and into the city. In many other respects fairly ordinary. This was our second stay. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and reasonably roomy. Join the Rydges club for some immediate benefits including reduced price, including on internet service which otherwise is very expensive, parking is expensive ($25 per day). Breakfast is also pricy, however there are many other options in the area (we like the Victoria Markets). The bar service at night is amateurish, a glass of port turned out to be a 30 ml "shot" in a whiskey glass on ice, amongst other errors. Service is so-so however Front Desk staff are friendly.

Room Tip: Get a room at the opposite end to the parking lot, rooms do vary in attractiveness. Join the Rydges...

We stayed two non consecutive nights at this hotel because it is near to our sons house.the first night was ok, with a clean and comfortable bed but the room was in need of refurbishment. The second night was in a different room and we knew it was a twin bedded room as that was all they had available. We also realised that we were staying at the same time as the Australian Open Tennis tournament. However never accept room 211. It is next to the lift which is an old noisy one. The basin in the bathroom was cracked, paint was peeling off the shower room. It was not what I would define as a twin room as the second bed was a converted settee or similar with no bedside table. The fridge was also really noisy and iced up. What a disappointment. The only plus side was that the front desk reception staff were very professional and courteous.
