“Excellent excellent location - right in the middle of a whole bunch of top-rated restaurants!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012 via mobile

We got a 2 bedroom apartment, which came complete with cooking and laundry facilities. It had quite a nice view of the river. However, it's not particularly soundproof. All in all, a good place at a good price.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

he Medina executive apartment hotel is a well located hotel with nice views. I had a large one bedroom suite and a decent sized balcony with a nice view overlooking Southbank and the river.

The rooms are large, moderately clean but very shabby with motel type furniture that has obviously been well used. Cheap toiletries accompany cheap linens and battered furniture that attracts dust and more given the furniture fabric. I discovered that housekeeping at this hotel is an outsourced service and the long strands of blond hair on both the couches and the black carpeting indicated a lack of proficiency with the vacuum cleaner and a half hearted attempt at cleaning. The phones were antique ( no cordless phones or speaker phones) and there was no phone in the bed room. The walls had many scuff marks and some of these had been badly painted over leaving mismatched blotches on the walls.

There is a small but functional gym off the nondescript lobby. Lobby staff were young and lackadaisical and obviously lacking in enthusiasm.

The USD 210 rate included a "Full" breakfast at the "Hotel restaurant -- both misnomers. The "restaurant" is actually 50 metres outside the hotel on a different street and is an independent coffee shop- restaurant. The "full" breakfast is deceptive in that I got One toast and was then offered the choice of juice OR coffee - and was asked to pay extra if I wanted both or another toast. As the hotel website says this is a $ 25 dollar value but you can walk in to the restaurant and pay $ 12+ for the same.

The internet policy of the hotel is quite bizarre in that you pay for use per device at $22 per day or $ 66 per week. So if you want to use your laptop, Ipad and phone on wireless you can expect to pay for each. If you are travelling as a couple you can expect to be charged twice that -- so you could pay 60 % of the room rate in just wireless charges. As I noted to hotel reception staff, this is like buying a bottle of water and then being charged for each glass used. They vehemently agreed with me however were unable to rectify this for some dubiously convoluted reasons. Medina pretends to be a business hotel but such amateurish triple charging is just unjustified.

I requested late checkout and was informed that normal check out was 1130..and if I stayed till 1 Pm it would be AUD 100 and anything after would be a full night rate. There was zero flexibility on this despite the room not being booked. When I queried their lack of flexibility - I was told it was a function of their outsourced housekeeping. This just added to my overall unsatisfactory experience.

Medina is also on the corner of a busy intersection - so loading and unloading from a taxi can be challenging.

Expedia lists Medina as 4+ stars which is a gross exaggeration. More likely 3 stars. It also list "on site" restaurant and "luxury" hotel - clearly not the case. Deceptive advertising ?? Rather than blame the hotel, I actually blame the jokers at Australian Star Ratings who are handing out these star rankings. If Medina is 4 + stars then the Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt (both of which I have stayed at numerous times) would be 9 stars.

Medina is like a cheap Motel Masquerading as a Mansion. I would stay elsewhere as Melbourne has plenty of choices.

We stayed in Medina executive apartments, Flinders street for 3 nights with our family and kids and it was a wonderful experience. The apartments are nicely furnished with specious living & dining areas and nice bedrooms. The kitchen facility is well designed and stocked. The apartments are clean and well maintained.

Location is superb... very convenient just a stones throw away from Federation square and Flinders station from where most of the day tours depart. We could also easily walk to all the attractions in the city from our apartment. There is a supermarket right at the entrance of the apartments and there are several restaurants nearby.

We really loved our stay here.

Room Tip: Red line bus from airport drops you at the front door and picks you up from the street at the back.

It was so close to everything & the views over the city and beyond were amazing!!!

Staff were friendly and efficient. We arrived early, however they checked us in promptly and without a worry. We really appreciated it as we had lots of baggage and nowhere to go.

Checkout was fast and they allowed us to store our baggage without cost as out flight out was late in the afternoon.
These little extra's that they provide are really worth it and I would highly recommend staying here.

The apartment (2 bedroom, 2 bathroom) was large and comfortable with all the basics provided, however they do need an egg slide, which is not a problem but it makes it easier if you like eggs for breaky.

Only negative were that the beds were uncomfortable. They've seen better days!!! Pillows should have been thrown away years ago. They were flat & lumpy! Washing machine was a front loader with built in dryer however the dryer only managed to cook the clothes and not dry them!

The positives far outway the negatives!!!

One bedroom apartment was spacious with Tv in lounge and bedroom, full kitchen. View over the river, and tram just outside the door. 2 minutes walk to federation square, and restaurants.
Room could do with a good commercial clean, furniture/carpets are stained and curtains grubby, and paint work could do with a good clean. Housekeeping was not great, room still not serviced when we returned at 4.00pm.
Reception staff lovely and very helpful, they must have great tolerance to put up with the noise of construction work going on nearby!

Stayed in a studio apartment for 3 nights around mid-August 2012. The good thing is that it was clean and big with loads of storage space, but it gave me a very bad first impression.

We reached the hotel in the morning and were given the keys to the studio we booked. We had two large heavy suitcases and were told to climb a flight of stairs in order to reach another building where our room was. I thought - fine, just a flight of stairs, we can manage. When we reached that building, what a shock, our room is on the second floor and no lifts!! I almost twisted my wrist lugging the suitcases up the stairs (and down when we left).

Word of advice, make sure you ask for a room which is accessible by lift if you have suitcases with you, and also, the short distance between the reception and the entrance to that 'other building' can be quite dark and quiet at night, won't suggest if you are a female travelling alone.

Dear Guest,

Thankyou for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Medina Executive Flinders Street.

We appreciate the time you have taken to provide us with your feedback. In relation to the points you have raised. Unfortunately, our One Bedroom Studio apartments do not have a lift to the building. However, we have two lifts located in our main building which has 1, 2 and 3 Bedroom apartments as this may be more appealing for you on your next visit to Melbourne.

I would like to thank you providing this feedback and if you would like to discuss this in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at the hotel.

Large rooms in a vintage hotel setting. Some might find it to look a little outdated but in Melbourne, where heritage is respected I find this hotel to be a perfect place to stay when in Victoria. The staff were great, we stayed there on a very busy weekend in Melbourne and had no problems with efficiency. I has a two bedroom apartment and it had a large dining area, large bathroom and a kitchen with a stove, oven, microwave and full-sized fridge. Very happy with our short stay.
