I really enjoyed Melbourne Museum. I got there on the free tourist bus which stops right in front of the museum, the bus runs every half hour, its only about 10 minutes ride from Federation Sq.
The Mesopotamia exhibition were on, when were there and I really learn a lot about the civilization. Together with the exhibition, the admission ticket was $24/person, without $10/person.
The museum's permanent collections were also a great mix of Australian wild life of past & present; earth sciences; human body & mind; Australia & Victoria's history among others.
There is also a small Australian rainforest there.
Plan to spend at least 2 or 3 hours or half a day there if with kids. Lots can be seen & learn there.
The IMAX theater is also there but I didn't have enough time to go.
