“Luxury and great service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2014

We used the hotel as a base to attend the Australian Open tennis and it was excellent. Great service, polite and friendly staff and a wonderful large room that had a King sized bed and plenty of space for an additional bed for our 13yo grandson.

Excellent hotel with great rooms, excellent service and the food both in room dining and the world class buffet breakfast was outstanding. I also like the complimentary internet given to Gold Passport members during my stay.

Friendly, helpful staff on check in. It was 44oC outside so was very nice that the room was a cool 19oC. Very clean and very comfortable bed, will certainly stay again. Only thing was there are no ice machines on the floor aqndyou have to wait for room service to deliver it.

Having stayed in several Hyatts in Asia-Pacific (Grand Hyatt Erawan, Hyatt Regency Perth (for a month), Hyatt Regency Hua Hin, Grand Hyatt Taipei) I feel confident saying that this hotel was a major let-down and by far the worst property of the lot.

The rooms were in terrible condition (the door handle to our bathroom was coming out of its socket and the shower was shocking, it got water everywhere leaving the marble floors in a dangerously slippery state). The cupboard which held the Nespresso Machine had its door fall off its hinges when we pulled it open!

All the above could be forgiven if it weren't for the service also lacking in the extreme. In the Club Lounge service was profoundly disappointing. We stayed during the Aus Open and while we also appreciated being surrounded by tennis stars, being blatantly ignored and having requests never attended to left us feeling unwelcome. Hot canapé dishes were made available to all other guests but when I requested one I was made to feel like an imposition and not given any choice of what I wanted. We only realised these dishes were available when we noticed the tables around us being served and offered seconds!

Not once were we welcomed to the lounge instead having to find our own seats and pull tables together for our larger group. At breakfast, I had to request butter not once, not twice but three times before it finally arrived 10mins+ after asking for it! Tomato juice ran out and was never replaced so consequently we went without. Although we saw plenty of staff, they all seemed to be preoccupied most of the time chatting with the tennis players, coaches and staff! Would have been ok if the same courtesy of asking how the stay was going was extended to the ordinary guests.

On the upside, the Collins Kitchen was truly exceptional - service was great and food simply stunning. Shame the same could not be said for the hotel in general.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the park. One side of the hotel faces another building, the other side...

Dear John,

We are terribly sorry to hear that you did not receive a warm welcome and 5-star service whist you were in Grand Club Lounge. We thank you for bringing this to our attention and Management has been notified and will take corrective action. We are glad to hear you enjoyed Collins kitchen and hopefully the rest of your time in Melbourne.

Wow! Very nice property! Had an extended stay and was able to use most of the hotel's amenities. Food in the club lounge and the restaurants was very good! Service throughout was very good. Car park at $50 per day is spendy, but so is all of Melbourne. Valet is quick though.
Fantastic gym! The largest I've seen at a hotel--this one shared with the public. Pool is very small, yet large enough for small children to have fun. Cold dunk and jacuzzi are next to the pool, whilst sauna and steam rooms are inside men's and women's locker rooms.
Rooms are exceptionally ample and well appointed. Channel offerings are somewhat limited though.
Excellent location in the center of the city! Close to everything!
Recommendations on sight seeing: 1) Philip Island to see the penguins, with a side trip to one of the parks (easy drive of about 1.5 hours). Lots to do there. 2) Souverign Hill to see a real life gold mining town out of the 1800's! This is not Disney, but a real living museum! When you go into the shops, they are real! You can pan for gold (we found a spec), and go down into a gold mine! 3) Great ocean road AND/OR a zoo (possibly a petting zoo if that interests you). On the great ocean road (easily drivable if you don't want a tour), you can stop and see Koala's in the trees on the side of the road, see Roo's at the golf course, and stop at many of the vista's or just drive direct to the 12 Apostle's.
A great restaurant and an easy 20 minute walk is Borsari's in Little Italy. There are lots of restaurants near the hotel, but this one is definitely worth it!

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room! So many views, that any direction is great!
