“Great hotel, great quiet location and great staff.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

We spent a weekend at this hotel and I was most impressed. We had also stayed here several years ago but the refurbished rooms in this old heritage building are a great improvement.

Check in at Reception was prompt and we were able to check into our room a few hours early. The lady at the front desk was fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for her. Looby is small but has kept the old charm from the era.

We had a 1 bedroom apartment which was both roomy and modern. This apartment could sleep 2 Adults and 2 Children. There were 2 flat screen TVs,pay television,dishwasher,2 burner stove, microwave to name a few of the features. Kitchen was fully equiped but really no need to cook as eateries are close by and very cheap. We purchased mains in a local Thai Cafe for about $10. Several food courts nearby also so you are spoilt for food choices at reasonable prices. Many fine dining options nearby also.

The location is in Flinders Lane between Queen St and Elizabeth St. Its only a very short walk away from the Flinders St Station. Being in the lane made the location quiet but very convenient. If coming from the airport the airport shutle will drop you off at the hotel.

I would highly recommend staying at this hotel but if you are looking for a place with recreation features such as pools etc this wont be the place for you.

We spent a week here and really found it convenient and comfortable. The location couldn't be any better...everything we did was within a 30 minute walk, even the MCG and Etihad Stadium. There are plenty of restaurants and every kind of fast food you could want within minutes. There's even a Bakers Delight practically across the street....delicious! My only gripe would be with the laundry facilities. They haven't been refurbished and they could a change. The machines are outdated and don't wash or dry very well. It's $3 for a wash and $2 for 30 minutes of drying time, but you need at least an hour to get most things dry. It would be nice to get some new machines in there if you insist on charging guests for the self serve laundry. Finally, they only service the rooms every 3 days (unless you want to pay for more frequent service). If they did it every 2 days, it would make it an even better place to stay. I'd definitely go back!

My best friend and I stayed 10-15 May 2012. Great, central location - couldn't have asked for better; so close to everything we wanted and walking distance to almost everywhere. We caught a cab 2x to dinner as we were running late but walked home every night. Apartment was true to photos, great size, big comfy bed and sofa bed. Clean, well serviced and everything you'd want for a home away from home. Would highly recommend and would use again with my hubby and son - big enough for a family of 4; 2 tvs so kids could easily be shut off in the bedroom if you wanted to have people over.
Friendly, helpful staff. Best value for money.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are very quiet - we were on tenth floor in a room overlooking the courtyard - didn...

We stayed at the apartments on Saturday, 28 April, 2012 and Sunday, 29 April, 2012 whilst enjoying a visit to Melbourne.

The apartments are centrally located, with lots to do, eat and drink very close by.

The room was very pleasant and comfortable and mostly we enjoyed our stay.

If you're considering a visit, then I would suggest you be sure to request a room away from the elevators, but facing onto Flinders Lane. I think a street view is better than a brick wall.

Supermarket across the street and bottle shop....thank god. Cooking facilities very uptodate. View from the windows of another building wall, not so pleasing, but hey....location...location. Apartment very Chic....

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2012

The Grand Mercure apartments in Flinders Lane Melbourne have recently been refurbished to a very high standard. The apartment layout is comfortable and spacious with a small kitchen/meals area which is fitted with a granite bench top, microwave oven and a two hotplate cooking surface as well as a dishwasher; small refrigerator and a wash sink. Cutlery and crockery for four were a supplied as was the usual small supply of coffee, tea, sugar etc. An electric kettle and toaster were also part of the inventory The table and four chairs were comfortable although the chairs were noisy to move on the tiled floor. The table also has a stone top which made setting the table pretty noisy as well. (Small beer really)

The sitting room was equipped with a generous sized sofa and a wing chair. There was a writing desk and chair with a large wall flat screen TV above the desk. There are power outlets and AV inputs for connecting your videocam or laptop to the TV. There is also a network port as well as a wireless network available to guests but at the usual outrageous data charges found in many hotels today.

The bedroom was generously sized with a comfortable king sized bed with two bedside table and bedside lamps. There is another large flat screen TV mounted on the wall in here as well. There;s a clock radio with iPod connectivity and a remote on one of the bedside tables. There was a reasonable sized closet (with automatic light when the door opens) as well as a couple of large sized drawers for storage. A shelf and a place to put your suitcase(s) was included in this area. The closet had an ironing board and steam iron included.

The sitting room and bedroom opened out onto a small balcony overlooking a large internal courtyard. The sitting room and bedroom were fitted with day curtains and very effective block-out curtains.

The ensuite bathroom was tastefully finished in dark grey tiles and included a large well lit mirror with plenty of bench space and shelves for the usual vast quantity of toiletries that accompanies us on journeys these days. The shower area was delightfully large and included a large shower head as well as a hand held shower head.

There are no clothes washing or drying facilities in the apartment but there is a laundry nearby on one of the floors available for guests to use on a "coin in the slot" basis.

Limited valet car parking spaces are also available within the building for a fee ($30.00 AUD per day at the time of writing this review)

The apartments are very centrally located in the Melbourne CBD with easy access to busses trams and trains. The Yarra river is a 5 minute walk from your door with a host of restaurants on the south bank complex and the Crown casino is a further 10 minutes away.

The staff at the Mercure were very friendly and helpful and very quick to respond to any requests made of them.

The apartments are comfortable and well appointed with good (adjustable) lighting. They were generally quiet although a young family with young kids moved into an apartment next to ours and the kids were obviously VERY excited but once they settled down all was good again! No traffic noise either.

There is no restaurant in the hotel but there are literally hundreds of restaurants, cafes and assorted eateries within walking distance, and then there's Lygon street , just a short tram rida away with hundreds of brilliant Italian and oriental restaurants eager to assuage your hunger if not your guilt.

MInor grumbles: Placemats for the table would quieten the inevitable banging of crockery and cutlery. A light in the ensuite controlled by a switch inside rather outside the ensuite would enable late night trips to the loo to be conducted discretely without having the light disturbing one's partner.

Overall I'd score this 9 out of ten. We've stayed here before and we'd happily stay again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Sebel Melbourne Flinders Lane was completely refurbished in September 2011, when it celebrated its 90th anniversary. The refurbishment design philosophy drew inspiration from the early "fashion house" days with a view of creating an expression of sophisticated elegance, through an individual design concept that would remain unique to The Sebel Melbourne Flinders Lane. The result has turned this "all suite" apartment building into a market leading boutique hotel. Presented is a contemporary range of sophisticated one bedroom suites that infuse modern design philosophies with the architectural and historical heritage of the building. Archival Melbourne scenes are displayed in the black and white artwork that adorn the corridors, evolving into a celebration of Melbourne’s modern icons throughout the suites. With the retention of the original detailed cornice and architraves, blended with contemporary designer furniture and fittings and modern state of the art appliances, the change is exceptional. The sophisticated colour palette is the key design element, from charcoal European bathroom tiles, contrasted by the white, chrome and glass designer fixtures to the use of dark veneers, stainless steel, leather and stone throughout the design.New Guest Features include Lounge 321 located on the ground floor of the hotel, which provides guests with complimentary internet access, newspapers, magazines, games, business and entertainment TV channels. The Courtyard is a European inspired inner city escape that provides guests with an intimate courtyard garden to share a drink with friends or to simply relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. While the days of fashion are well in the past at 321 Flinders Lane, those looking for a fashion experience will not be disappointed with The Sebel Melbourne’s Flinders Lane location. Ideally located between Elizabeth and Queen Street, it is in close proximity to Melbourne’s shopping, and entertainment district with the added benefit of having Melbourne’s famous cafe culture and the iconic Flinders Street Station right around the corner. ... more   less
