3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2011

Location is good but that's about it. Very average and a little rundown. Curtains missing from the room.
Staff are very disinterested. When I checked in the lady was very rude.
Suppose you can't expect much when the rates are so cheap compared to other places in the city.
Wouldn't stay here again though.

The exact date i stayed at Darling Towers is unknown to me but it has remained in my mind as one of the best Melbourne hotels i have stayed at.
we were given a free complimentary upgrade which was nice
the room was spacious with a lovely modern kitchen and two seperate sleeping rooms.
the downer was the lift broke which meant we had to walk up alot of stairs alot but to be fair the staff helped us get our baggage down the stairs when it was time to leave.
i would reccomend this hotel to anyone.

My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights in early February 2011. We were upgraded from a studio to a 2 bedroom apartment on arrival which was a very pleasant surprise. The staff were friendly and helpful. The apartment was modern and clean, the carpet looked new. The bathroom was more spacious than the usual hotel room bathroom and nice and clean - no mouldy tiles! The kitchen facilities were excellent - had everything we needed to cook evening meals with produce we brought from Melbourne's fabulous fresh food markets. The aircon worked but we could also open the windows for fresh air which was nice - although there was a bit of city noise noticable at night - but it didn't stop us from sleeping and one can always close the windows! So all in all a very pleasant (and reasonably priced) place to stay.

We went to Melbourne for a short get away in early January (before the Australian Open). We found Darling Towers on Collins on lastminiute.com.au. For a family of four adults, we booked a two bedroom apartment for average $160/night.

Please note this establishment is a serviced apartment (not a hotel/motel). You are provided with towels, toiletries etc but your apartment is cleaned/serviced on the third day of your stay (excluding weekends). However if you need extra towels, toiletries etc, you can call reception and they will assist you.

The best thing about Darling Towers is its location. Its on Collins Street right smack bang in the middle of Melbourne CBD within walking distance to all the CBD attractions such as the MCG, Rod Laver Arena, Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, Bourke Street Mall, Southbank, Crown Casino, South Wharf, NGV etc. There is a tram stop right outside the front door where you can connect to Southern Cross Station (for trips to Melbourne Zoo, or tram to St Kilda Beach). Its a 2 minute walk down to Flinders Street where you can catch the free tourist tram and/or the free tourist bus that will take you around the outskirts of the Melbourne CBD. Its a 5 minute walk up Swanston St to Bourke St Mall shopping and Chinatown. The property is within walking distance to a multitude of restaurant/cafes that will cater to all tastes. styles and pallets. The property is located at the "Paris" end of Collins Street with high end boutiques such as Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Tiffany & Co basically at your doorstep. From Tullamarine airport, a cab ride to Darling Towers is approximately $50-60.

The reception for this property is located on the 8th floor. From the street, it resembles an apartment building as there is no "front desk" on the ground floor just the name of the building and the street number. The reception area is actually an apartment on the 8th floor. They have a room dedicated for luggage storage and we utilized this facility upon arrival and also on our day of departure. The reception staff were courteous and helpful but they made an error when checking us in. We were given keys to an already occupied apartment. When we opened the door to the apartment we were shocked to find people already there. The situation was embarrassing and should not happen at any establishment. When we went down to reception to let them know of the error, the staff were polite and apologized for the mistake and give us the keys to the correct apartment. Note that along with visitor, the towers are also home to permanent residents which I coincidently saw advertised for sale at $429K for an 11th floor 2br apt. Although the reception is open 24hrs, access to the apartments after 18:00 is via an electronic key ring and locked security front door. There are also CCTV camera monitoring the corridors of each of the floors.

The 2 br apartment we were allocated was on the 7th floor facing west. As you enter the apartment, you walk into a corridor runs the length of the apartment. The second bedroom is first on your right then comes the bathroom/laundry and the final room along the corridor is the master bedroom. At the end of the corridor is the living area that consists of a lounge room, a kitchen/dining area. Also our apartment had access to a good sized balcony with an outdoor settee for 2. Our balcony faced Southbank and the Eureka Tower. Below was a laneway that gave access to a car park. When standing on the balcony, you can clearly hear the hustle and bustle of Collins Street with the trams and general traffic but with the door closed, the traffic noise is completely shut out. The apartment also had ducted air conditioning thru out. The air con was working great - very important as Melbourne reached 35 and 38 degrees on two of the days we stayed, and the air con kept the apartment at a very comfortable 21 degrees.

In the living room, there was an 81cm (32") Sharp LCD tv with a DVD player in an entertainment unit. Opposite the TV was a two seater lounge and coffee table and reading lamp. Coming off the lounge was the kitchen and dining area. In the dining area was a round table for four people. The kitchen was L shaped and had all the amenities including a gas cooktop, and electric oven, a microwave, a full sized fridge, a dishwasher and also cutlery, and cooking utensils and pots and pans. Also provided was the usual kettle with tea/coffee etc. You could go to the supermarket (about 5-10 mins walk away) and purchase fresh food to cook for the duration of your visit. We generally used the kitchen to cook breakfast and late night snacks but if you want to save some $$$ you can definitely cook all your meals in the kitchen.

The master bedroom had a comfortable queen size bed with bedside cabinet with drawers. Also there were two built in wardrobes that had spare pillows and blankets as required. The master bedroom also has direct access to the bathroom. The second bedroom had two single beds with a bedside cabinet with drawers in between. Note that the walls of the bedrooms facing the hallway a made of opaque/frosted glass to let light in during the day. They can be somewhat see-thru or at least provide a silhouette effect at night (at least with the lights on in the bedroom and dark outside).

The bathroom was very spacious with a full sized bath. There is a shower head to one end of the bath (with a rather small shower screen) for those who prefer showers. There is also a large cupboard in the corner of the bathroom that houses the washing machine. The bathroom was clean and fairly modern although some of the grouting in the tiles around the bathroom were missing/peeling. In my opinion the only thing missing are some towel racks in the bathroom to hang clothes/clean towel but otherwise everything is good.

Overall impressions on this property is positive. Considering other hotels within 500m of this property were charging between $250-$350/night fora twin room, the Darling Towers on Collins was great value. The apartment we stayed in was neat, clean and tidy and neither myself or out family had any complaints (apart from the mix up at check-in). When in Melbourne next time, will definitely consider to stay at Darling Towers and would also highly recommend this property to family/friends looking for accommodation.

What a secret gem. Close to the Shoppping end of Collins street. All the previous reviews we correct. Don't let the exterior of the building put you off or the hike up to the 8th floor to check in daunt you. We stayed for 6 nights and found it great value for money. Upon arrival the lift and conditions of the hallway did worry me but once I entered the two bedroom appartment I was pleasantly surprised to find a very roomy apartment. All the beds and bedding were very comfortable. The second bedroom was small but let's face it how long are you really in bed in a place like Melbourne. Okay, there is no veiw out of the one set of windows, so on a long stay if you yearn for wide open spaces it will affect you. The kitchen was brilliant as we would eat at many of the nearby eateries during the day and then prepare some of the produce we had gathered during the day at night, thus saving valuable shopping money for more luxurious offerings.
We didn't have our own transport and didn't need to as the brilliant trams we either right outside the entrance, or around the corner and the most you needed to walk was two blocks in wither direct to find some wonderful shopping , eating or festivities.
My two teenage children thought that it was a good location as when they got footsore they could easily return to the room for a break before venturing out again.

Located on Collins St right outside a tram stop and very close to Swanston St (right in Melb CBD). Our apartment was clean and sufficient for 2 adults and 2 children (under 3yrs). Staff willingly stored our baggage prior to check-in and on departure. Easy walk to many great cafes and places of interest. Check their website for best deals.

I got a pretty good rate on a 2 bedroom apartment when I stayed recently for just one night. It was within walking distance of everything we needed, so location was all important. Might stay here again for similar reasons - it was clean and reasonably spacious with a good layout. I do agree with the reviewers who refer to the average furnishings, fraying carpet, slow lifts, bored staff and scruffy corridors. But given the price and location, I think I probably got what I paid for with this one.
