“Excellent location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2010

The hotel is perfectly centered, very close to everthing. It has the advantage to be in the city center without the usual drawback (noise, traffic). The staff is extremely friendly. The room was very clean but not very big but this was not an issue at all.
If I have to go back to Melbourne I would definetly book in this hotel.

The bed was to single beds put together, with bad quality mattress. You could hear anyone walking through the passage way and everything in the next room.

A perfect location for shopping or sight-seeing in Melbourne. We have stayed at both the Mercure Welcome and its 'sister' (The Swanston Grand Mercure). They share a foyer area. If you're looking for big, luxurious rooms in the same perfect spot, choose the Grand. However, we feel that its not really worth the extra money, particularly if you intend to spend the majority of your waking hours out and about.
At the Mercure Welcome we pay the (usually $25) supplement for the larger room with kitchenette etc. It's still around $40 cheaper than the Grand and the view on the higher floors at the Welcome is better than any we have been given at the Grand (usually facing a building or looking out at air conditioning units). In addition (if you want to save further) you can use the kitchenette to have a similar breakfast to the $18 per person in the hotel for a few dollars.
The rooms at The Welcome are looking a bit tired, but they are clean and have everything you would expect (even a smallish bath). The staff are helpful and friendly. Parking is relatively expensive, especially if you use the Grand's valet parking service (about $35 as opposed to $20, if I recall). However, driving to and finding your way from the car park is tricky in the one-way streets and our GPS can take ages to respond among the high rise buildings.
On the whole, if you're looking for a hotel that's close to it all for a reasonable (big city) price, you can't beat the Mercure Grand. We've stayed there several times and, although we always to check out what's on offer elsewhere, we can never seem to find anywhere as conveniently located that gives the same value for money as the Mercure Welcome. For more pampering, choose the Grand. For a good level of comfort at a reasonable price, choose The Welcome.

Stay 2 nights in Nov. Perfect location, good customer service. Housekeeping could be better though. On the 2nd day we got out the room at 10am, when we came back at 2pm room still not cleaned yet. The room is small, bath tub is showing it's age, but the aircon is working well. If you are looking for a good budget hotel in a central location than this is the place.
