“Very basic hotel but a good location, pity about the fire....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2009

This is a very basic, no frills hotel. The rooms are very small and the furniture and fittings are a bit tired but it was quite clean. It's in a great location, just behind Bourke Street Mall and right near china town precinct. First night we stayed, the side of the hotel caught fire at 3.30am in the morning. Scary thing was, no smoke/fire alarms were alerting us, it was just a staff member running along the hall banging on the door and yelling out that there was a fire and we needed to evacuate. Spent an hour and a half out in the street while the fire brigade put the fire out and then we got to return to our smoke filled rooms. There was no explanation from staff in the morning about what had caused the fire, they didn't even seem to want to acknowledge that it had happended. There was nothing from hotel management , not even so much as a "sorry for the inconvenience, have a coffee in the restaurant on us". All our linen and towels stunk of smoke but we had to ring reception and specifically request them to come up and change them the next morning. I know the fire wasn't the hotel's fault but i was disappointed with how they handled the aftermath.

This is the first time I have stayed at the Welcome Mecure, due to the fact that the Hotel I usually stay in was booked out. The staff here are exceptional in their friendliness and helpfulness, the rooms were old ,but spotless, and the sheets snow white, the rooms were on the small side ,for Melbourne, but still big enough to move around and put your case down. I never heard a noise all night, even though we were near the lift, Security is tight at this Hotel, you cannot use the lift unless you have your room card to slot in ,The breakfast consisted of Bacon ,Eggs Tomatoes, hash Browns baked Beans, all different types of Cereal and Fruits, Yogurt, and 4 Juices etc, The Breakfast room overlooked the City of Melbourne on the 15th Floor, their was a small splash pool on this floor also. I think there was also a gym you could use. If you like Casinos, there was one on the ground floor that served free coffee. But the best part was the closeness to all the major shops and China town where we dined at night,The trams are only a few feet away,if you want to see other parts of the city, but this is the most central place you can stay without costing an arm and a leg. If you want 5 star this is not for you ,but I would rate this hotel as 3 star, and a good budget hotel. Also if you are a senior , you receive 10% off your bill, We were 3 couples, all in our 60's and loved this Hotel. Only gripe was my single bed had a bit of a slope to the mattress.(We were all in twin rooms as the hotel was booked out other than twins)I did complain on checking out ,and the staff said that had I complained earlier, this problem would have been solved. They made a note to address this problem. We all said ,we would stay again.

This is an average 3 star hotel in a fantastic location. We paid $79 / night through an Accor special and were happy with what with got. Rooms very small but relatively clean. Bathroom could do with a good clean (some mould on the shower tiles). Hotel could improve their hallways, as the hallway carpet was dirty and rippled. The room doors are very thin, we could hear everytime someone walked past or opened their doors. This could be particarly bad if you were near the lifts. We had breakfast for $18 which was nice and filling; bacon, eggs, beans, tomatoes, hashbrowns, fruit, jogurt, muesli, cereal and toast, although no danish pastry or croissants.
Overall you get what you pay for - a no frills 3 star hotel in a 5 star location.

Wotif Mystery Hotel Deal - $100 a night!!! It was great. It had a bed, a fridge and a bathroom. TV for when you wanted to unwind. Walls are a bit thin, so on Friday night, with drunk neighbours, it was a hard to get to sleep. But apart from that, it was fantastic. There is a guest laundry. Cocoon Bar downstairs has happy hour from 5:30 pm, $5 wine and beer (their selection of course)! Everything was within walking distance!

I went to Melbourne for my husband's birthday. I was looking for a budget stay since i made grand dinner plans at Vue de monde. The hotel was in perfect location in City central. We basically walked everywhere within Melbourne. It's also right in the front steps of China town

Our room was away from the lifts so did not experience any noise. What annoyed me most was there was no shower glass screen. The toilet although clean was a disappointment.

For a budget stay what else can you expect? The hotel was small aswell.

I had a great time in Melbourne and would recommend this hotel to any one who wants a budget stay and no perks of a 4/5 start hotel.

This hotel is in a great location. Very close to the Swanston St / Bourke St intersection - the very middle of the city; right around the corner from Chinatown. The staff are courteous and helpful.
The room, for a budget hotel, was a good size, although the bathroom was very small. We had a King Room and agree with other reviewers that zip-together king beds should be banned. The problem with this hotel is noise. You can hear the lifts, you can hear people in the hallways, you can hear toilets flushing, people showering, and people talking in adjacent rooms all night. So if you are a light sleeper, this may not be the hotel for you. Maybe try and request a room well down the end of the hallway, well away from the lifts. Still, I was surprised by the amount of "water' noise. (taps running, toilets flushing, etc).
The breakfast was ok, reasonably priced - $18; although no croissant or danish to be seen,
If you want location, quieter rooms, nicer breakfast, all at a slightly more cost - stay at The Swanston, it's in the building next door to The Welcome - they, in fact, share reception desks and staff.

This budget hotel is slightly below average. The room I was in was spacious but very blandly decorated - not very nice for more than an overnight stay. Of the two room facilities I tried to use - the phone & the TV - the phone was broken and the TV remote didn't work very well (plus the TV was pretty shabby). Rather bizarrely the bedside clock radio was also filthy, covered in odd gunk that I didn't want to touch. Cleanliness is defnitely an issue here - if you scratch below the surface there is grime and dust aplenty - for example when I pulled back the curtains to plug in a laptop there was a thick fluffy coating of dust on the power sockets.

Despite the heating being set on I was usually cold and the system was noisy, but that helped dampen noise from other guests so a plus of sorts.

On the plus side, the bed was comfy and the linen clean, and the staff were helpful and efficient. The location is super convenient as it is slapped right in the middle of the CBD.

It's not an awful hotel, but I wouldn't reccommend it for anything longer than a stopover.
