“Good value but don't leave any valuables in your room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

We arrived in Melbourne and I had read previous reviews of the hotel. Expected the room to be small it was. It was clean and comfortable and other than not having free wifi it was great. The location is so close to every thing. Then after having an amazing ocean drive road tour we came back find our suitcases had been rifled through. Now we are not silly enough to leave anything of value in there but the principle of the matter is someone went through them. We told the hotel staff and did not expect anything to be done. But just be warned it happened. Otherwise we had a great trip.

Dear Karen,

Thank you for your feedback. I am very concerned to read your comment & I am aware that you've spoken with our Duty Manager regarding this. Your room was serviced by one of our long-standing employee with impeccable records & rest assured that we have conducted a thorough investigation process internally & the staff in-questioned stood firm that he did not go through your suitcases. Please feel free to contact myself if you wish to discuss this matter further.

Kind regards, Alex Mihardja, Operational Project Manager, Mercure Welcome Melbourne

Represents good value. Standard queen room is relatively small but you get what you pay for. The bathroom was modern and recently renovated - and the shower and hot with a great water flow - a bonus. The hotel offers a good basic service. Location was ideal close to Bourke St Mall. Good for a short stay.

I had 5 nights at the Mercure Welcome as a birthday gift to myself. The hotel is only average but is in a great location for access to public transport, shopping and restaurants. The room was clean and the price reasonable. I didn't use the hotel restaurant as there were plenty to choose from close by.

Room Tip: Wait until renovations are completed.

At the time of my stay renovations were taking place and it made the hotel appear dirty and disorganised in public areas. The long queues for the single functioning elevator was particularly frustrating. The location was great for Melbourne CBD and walking distance to my business meeting, the purpose of my trip. To be honest I was disappointed with the hotel but the staff were apologetic. It felt chaotic. I would probably go back after the renovations are complete - after reading post-renovations reviews on here of course.

Dear Kylie,

Thank you for your feedback. WE certainly share your frustration regarding the lift situation, unfortunately it took longer than expected for the spare-part to arrive. The renovation you were talking about must be related to the re-modelling of the entrance from Lt Bourke Street, which is at the final stage & would be completed at the latest by next week.

See you again soon, we hope.

This hotel is in a great location in the centre of Melbourne. It is surrounded by restaurants and shops, in Swanston and Bourke Streets. It is an excellent location for public transport, with a Swanston Street Tram stop just out the front door, and a Bourke Street tram stop a few metres away.

The rooms are cosy and comfortable, but have every thing you need for a good night's sleep. The buffet breakfast has a reasonable choice of hot and cold foods, and you can order eggs any way you like directly for you waiter.

For the location alone, we would definitely stay there again.

Although central location, the hotel really was not welcoming in its surrounds.
The room was very basic and with the pipes exposed on the ceiling. One could hear the water usage from above ie showers and loos. The room smelt like cheap disinfectant and was overpowering. Did have a great sleep though so a huge plus. Soul cafe is unfortunately the main thoroughfare for the poker machine room so gave it a very common feel. The food though was great. This would have been prepared in the main kitchen of the hotel. Personally I would not stay there again. Certainly not worth $170+ more like $80
