“Decent Stay on Chinatown”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

The hotel is a decent place to stay, good enough for travelers who just need a place to sleep. Affordable place right smack in China town with Myers, David Jones are located right next door.
Walk out via the adjacent sister hotel (Grand Mercure Swanston), you'll be able to find lots of asian restaurants.

Hotel's lift is undergoing upgrading so prepare to wait.

Another thing was, the hotel housekeeping won't clear away your used glasses or empty cans, rubbish was kept on the table top throughout the whole stay.

For those who drive, locating the hotel is not easy as Little Bourke is a tiny one way street, so if you miss it, you probably have to go one big round. Hotel offers parking at Mantra on Russell at $15 AUD for 24hrs.

Room Tip: Walls are thin, stay away from lifts.

You get what you pay for I suppose. We got 4 nights for the price of 3 but I think I might have preferred 3 nights in a better hotel. Having said that, I couldn't fault the location and the service we received was good after a tricky start.
Having read on Trip Adviser that rooms next to the lift were noisy I requested one as far as possible away from the lift. The room we were given was right next to the lift! It was small, dark and frankly, awful. I spoke to the girl on Reception to ask if she had thought we wanted to be near the lift! She was very apologetic and , after a short wait she upgraded us to a better room. It was much larger and well away from any noise, although very dark and gloomy.
The bed was comfy and the shower was good, housekeeping was fine so no real complaints though it did feel a bit like staying in a caravan and the artexed ceiling was cheap looking with pipes across it.
The concierge was very helpful with suggestion for places to eat and Reception were hogue in sorting out our coach to the airport.
The lift situation might have been a problem if we had been less fit- we walked up and down the back stairs rather than wait for the one lift. To be fair we were aware of the lift renovation before we booked but felt that the location of the hotel and the 4 for 3 offer was worth the inconvenience.
The lobby and reception area let the hotel down, it is shabby and untidy and cheap looking.
If you want a reasonably priced hotel in a central location and don't mind shabby surroundings then Hotel Mercure Welcome isn't bad value.

One must remember the price one pays to stay here and on that note - the hotel itself is fine. The refurbished rooms are nice - particularly the bathroom with the older rooms definitely feeling dated. It will be decent when the renovations are complete. The rooms themselves however are pretty small and moving around can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. They were clean though - the most important thing.

We had just one issue whilst staying here and that was being able to hear the room above - all toilet noises, running water, pipe expansion - the whole lot. My room was the worst out of the 3 we had. I was moved to an unrenovated room by a rather non-blase reception staff member and whilst the problem still existed, it wasn't as bad. Management did send me a bottle of wine as a gift however and this was a very nice touch and much appreciated.

The location is hard to beat and for the price, you won't find anything in Melbourne that will match it. So despite the short comings, if you're on a budget, give it a shot.
