“Cheap and comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2012

Stayed here for two nights mid-week. We booked a couple months in advance and got a great rate on a standard double room - we were then upgraded to a 10th floor king suite upon arrival.

Location is excellent - a very short walk to Chinatown, Bourke st mall and Melbourne Central. Trams pass just outside on Swanston st, or along Bourke st.

The room itself was very large and spacious, equipped with a sink and mini-fridge. Hot water heated up very fast.

Overall no complaints, it was one of the cheapest hotels I found and it made for a very comfortable and convenient stay. Would definitely come back.

The location is great, right in the middle of the city , close to restaurants, cafes and shopping. Trams and other public transport easily accessible. The twin room was quite small, but extremely clean and comfortable. The queen room was a great size, beds were all comfy. The staff were all friendly, helpful and efficient. We have stayed here before and will so again, we don't bother looking anywhere else.

This hotel is located close to mall area & china town but that is the only real positive about it. It shares reception with a far better hotel in the same group so it was disappointing to to see how low the standard was at The Welcome Mecure. The hotel needs urgent upgrade to bring it up to the standard you expect from Mecure and Accor Hotels. Accor Hotels club recommended this hotel to us so will not take their advice in future as they should tell you about the low standard and not really value for money compared with other great hotels in the same area. If you are looking for a budget style hotel it be disappointing even then, but when you book into Mecure or Accor hotels in Melbourne central you definitely expect and deserve better.

Perfect inner-city venue, room small but spotlessly clean, beds very comfortable. Great value and service for the price. Highly recommended...

Only problem was that our lovely 'quiet' room backed onto a laneway ... and large dumpmaster bins were constantly wheeled into the lane over a two hour period from around 4am. Not the Hotel's fault at all.... just such a shame...

We stayed for a weekend and had a very good experience. There are two drawbacks. The rooms are small but we managed fine because we went out all day and then the theatre at night. The other drawback is you do sometimes hear people in the hallway and some noises from other rooms. However to counter these things the staff at reception went above and beyond to make you feel special and help you in any way. We also ate at the restaurant and the food was excellent and well priced. I would definitely go back to Mercure Welcome.

The best thing about this hotel is the location right in the middle of the city close to everything. Swanston Street is around the corner and Chinatown is a 2 minute walk. Unfortunately there is construction across the narrow road making it noisy and hard to get too and will be for some time. I'm surprised this is still a Mercure hotel as it would now be more suited to a Budget hotel chain. We stayed in a superior room which was very clean but is looking very tired. The bathroom needs updating and is so small there is nowhere to put your clothes (except on the toilet seat?). I'm not sure if there are any views - we could look straight into the windows of the neighbouring building so the curtains stayed closed. The worst thing was the rooms aren't soundproofed very well and you you could hear everything outside your room- including conversations in the room next door and the noisy vending machines. I couldn't fault the service which was friendly and helpful. The reception is shared with The Grand Mercure on Swanston Street ( a much nicer hotel but of course a bit dearer). Overall an ok hotel if you want a cheap place to sleep in a good location.

Room Tip: Stay in a superior room at least and ask for one well away from the vending machines and lifts as it...
